£400 energy - deduction from DD??

Can someone please explain this to me, I'm with EON.

I've just logged on to submit my meter readings as usual, I normally pay £100 per month direct debit but I submit my readings every month so the usage/credit is accurate.

It now says my direct debit will be £33 this month. How is this crediting me £67 when I'll still have the pay the same amount for my usage? I understand I'll have the extra £67 in my bank account but the usage will still have to be paid for? I'll now just be £67 less in credit.

I don't understand!

I'm with Eon and the way they have applied it is confusing. I had an email telling me that my direct debit was going up to £180 a month but that includes the £67. My DD currently is £207. It would have been helpful for them to say that my bill is going up to £247 and then give me the discounted price after the £67 has been applied.

They also sent a bill after my meter reading after the email above telling me my october DD will be £140. I do have £60 credit but I like my bills to be absolutely clear about what the charge is and what I am paying!

Thank you, it must be the way Eon are doing it which is confusin.

*confusing

I guess I'll just have to wait and see what happens when my bill is generated.

Am I the only person who has been forced to up my DD??

I currently pay £175/month and my bill this month was £102. I got an email saying my DD would be going up to £368/month from October. There is no mention of the £67/month from the government at all. They seem to be thinking I am going to go from £102/month to £435/month for the next 6 months.

I get that it's winter and costs are rising but that's just mad!

It still doesn't say here anything about crediting my energy account, it just says Eon will reduce my DD. Why doesn't it say my energy account will be credited?

It clearly says that your rebate will be credited to your account.

I had this to but put my dd back to £100 to cover (hopefully) the cost increase. Will just keep eye on it over next few months

Ok you have to take it as posters have said. The government's is paying the other £67. So therefore you only have to pay £33.

The last 4 lines of the first part specifically say ‘your rebate will be added as a credit on to your account each month’ so it actually does say exactly that.

WimbyAce · 30/09/2022 11:38

I think it is self explanatory. They have reduced your direct debit in line with the government contribution. The alternative would be to keep your dd the same and potentially you would build up credit.
Not sure what ours will be doing but I might need to up mine as we are currently in debt.

willithappen · 30/09/2022 11:39

It says literally all over the news/gov websites that it will credit your account though.

blackberrybat · 30/09/2022 11:42

I'm a bit confused as well OP, my Octopus account shows today that the reduced DD amount will be applied to my account tomorrow, but says nothing about how the Govt contribution will show / be paid. So I'm assuming either it will show up automatically at some point as an entry / credit against my balance or that some magic will happen in the background so it's taken into account against the units I've used.

Tippexy · 30/09/2022 11:42

mynameischloe · 30/09/2022 10:44

But if they reduce my direct debit, i still have to pay the same amount for usage?

For example for easiness-

£100 direct debit
£100 usage
= nothing owed

Now
£33 direct debit
£100 usage.
I still have to pay the £67 owing?

Oh my days.

THE GOVERNMENT ARE PAYING THE £67.

EON are reducing your DD because the government are giving them the money.

mynameischloe · 30/09/2022 11:35

@maximist it doesn't say it will be credited to my energy account, it says will reduce my DD.

Lets try again.

Yesterday you were paying £100 for your fixed rate, which will not change, give or take your usage.
Today you are paying £33 because the government is subsidising you £67 per month.
So, your bill which was more or less £100 per month, is still your bill, your prices are not going up. But you are benefitting from a discount from the government of £67 per month.

blackberrybat · 30/09/2022 11:44

I think its the optics that are maybe the issue i.e. where/how does the govt credit show on the account. I'm sure all will become clear once we actually hit October!

mynameischloe · 30/09/2022 11:45

The dd is reduced by the government contribution. There is no magic.

Whilst I don't quite understand your question we are with eon and our DD has also reduced to less than what we currently pay due to the £67 rebate. However, given that energy prices are also rising I've decided to up my DD so that after the £67 reduction so that I still pay what I was paying before. I would rather end up in credit after the winter and get credit back then than risk ending up in debt and having to pay more later.

That's what I've done, I went into the account and put it back to the previous amount. I may have left it too late for next weeks payment but am going to keep a close eye on (because my husband is unwell and a lizard and our usage is high anyway)

To be fair to OP, I did find it all a bit confusing.

Eeksteek · 30/09/2022 12:04

Its just a two step process. They've deducted the money from your DD (which you probably pay in advance anyway) and when they get round to it , they’ll deduce the usage from your bill as well (which will be produced in arrears, likely). It’ll all come out in the wash. At the moment, you’re looking this month’s DD and last month’s bill. In another month, it’ll catch up.

mynameischloe · 30/09/2022 12:13

@CPL593H thank you, I'm glad it's not just me. I've had a bit of a roasting here.

Yes, I'm going to put the money back onto my energy account too.
