Any current John Lewis credit card holders been declined by new provider?

Just trying to work out what's going on.....the new credit provider for the John Lewis credit card has declined me for a new card because I don't meet their eligibility criteria - despite paying my bill in full each month and having a healthy credit rating. I've given up trying to contact them to find out why as I can never get through to anyone. I'm just wondering if anyone else has also been declined, especially if you pay your bill in full each month.

I've effectively been ghosted. The link they sent to me keeps returning a message
We're not able to check your eligibility right now. This is due to a technical problem. For example, a third-party credit reference agency might not be responding. We're sorry for the inconvenience. Please try again later.

I've called them and they said they will raise a ticket and call me later. They never did and I keep getting the same message. I've already applied for a new credit through another provider as I don't hold much hope on them getting back. (I also paid in full every month and have good credit rating)

Mine went through fine but I have a balance on there. I’d definitely call them

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 29/09/2022 19:11

I'd suspect they don't like that you pay your bill in full, it means they get no interest out of you so you aren't going to make them any money.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 29/09/2022 19:11

Possibly if you have always paid in full then they don't want you because you're not profitable enough. They do make some money from prompt payers but they make far, far more from people who don't pay in full because the interest charges are high.

There was a whole segment on this on You and yours on radio 4 yesterday lunch

Snoredoeurve · 29/09/2022 19:13

I pay in full each month.
Mine went through in 5 minutes

EmpressoftheMundane · 29/09/2022 19:16

I pay in full and it went right through.

You should call. There lines are overloaded because there was a glitch in getting the new cards out and everyone is calling thinking their card was lost in the post.

dalisdrippingclock · 29/09/2022 19:18

I spend around £750-£1300 per month, pay in full, so not really a 'desirable' big spender. Mine went through in about ten minutes. Wonder if they are just overwhelmed with the amount of people trying to change over?

mynameiscalypso · 29/09/2022 19:19

I always pay mine off in full and I was accepted no problem. But I really wouldn't bother if I was you. It's shit. The new app is terrible. I made a payment of £500 from my bank account to the card last week which just seems to be floating around in the air and they won't apply it to my card.

Garysmum · 29/09/2022 19:20

Mine took a while to arrive. Pay in full every month. Credit limit increased hugely. Weird.

321zyx · 29/09/2022 19:22

I pay in full every month, application went through immediately (card arrived today).

OxanaVorontsova · 29/09/2022 19:22

Used ours a lot, paid in full every month, offered same credit limit

321zyx · 29/09/2022 19:23

...should have added that card took a long time to arrive........

I pay in full every month, excellent credit rating. Got rejected. Very odd.

TheFallenMadonna · 29/09/2022 19:40

We use it a lot (for vouchers), pay in full every month. No problems.

cheesepretzel · 29/09/2022 20:41

Thanks everyone, lots of useful info. I was wondering if it was because they didn't make any money out of me but it seems some people in the same boat are getting new cards. I won't bother chasing it up any more, I'll look for a different card.

It was in guardian money too. Lots of people worried about being rejected.

EnjoyingTheSilence · 29/09/2022 21:03

I need to do this. Do you still get jl vouchers with the new provider?

MintJulia · 29/09/2022 21:03

I pay my bill in full every month, and have been approved by the new provider, but my new card has double the credit limit, without me asking for it.

There doesn't seem to be any consistent pattern.

Is it related to how much people spend? Or home ownership? Or something completely random?

user6497219 · 29/09/2022 21:04

A lot of posters on MSE forum have been rejected and a lot of bad reviews about this on Trustpilot, it seems to be a lot of older and retired folk who pay off in full each month

user6497219 · 29/09/2022 21:08

Also people who have paid of their mortgage getting rejected. I know one of the credit reference agencies gave me a top tip about bettering my already good credit score by getting a mortgage - but we own our house having paid off the mortgage...

MsRinky · 29/09/2022 21:59

I've paid my mortgage off, pay in full every month and got approved in about 5 minutes with a higher credit limit.

LemonJuiceFromConcentrate · 29/09/2022 22:03

I got approved — but with a much lower limit than I used to have.

I do have quite a lot of debt, tbf, although I’m paying it down and never miss a payment.
