Covid booster this afternoon... I want the moderna new one... Any advice

I've been sent appt for this afternoon covid booster. I've had three pfizers in past and know the centre I'm booked at does both but unsure how tgey sort this out... Stock or set days. I really don't want another Pfizer... I've had three and also had covid in June this year... Can I request a modena? Any advice? Anyone work in vaccines? I don't see the point of another Pfizer when the moderna is tweaked to protect against omicron.

I had three Pfizer. Then Moderna on Sunday. Never felt so ill. Wouldn’t recommend it.

MrsFezziwig · 28/09/2022 10:54

How old are you? I had my booster last week and was automatically offered Moderna (the new bivalent one).

omega4ever · 28/09/2022 10:55

@UrsulaPandress were you given a choice or was it decided by the centre?? I really want the moderna, hope the reaction means it's giving you lots of immunity for the winter. Hope you are feeling better to.

I think most places are just doing the Moderna bivalent one, so it’s most likely you’ll get that one anyway, just ask first. Unlike pp I had Moderna on Monday and felt absolutely fine, just a sore arm.

DramaAlpaca · 28/09/2022 10:55

I've had two Modernas and two Pfizers. I felt ill after the Modernas but no side effects with the Pfizers.

omega4ever · 28/09/2022 10:55

@MrsFezziwig I'm 55. HCW.

I had Moderna Bivalent on Monday along with the flu jab.

Have two quite sore arms instead of only the one this year.

omega4ever · 28/09/2022 10:57

I had my flu vax a week ago. No side effects

My post was a bit unclear. I think if you’ve been invited due to age or vulnerability then you will get the new Moderna vaccine. I’m late sixties. My under-65 friends haven’t been invited yet.

MrsFezziwig · 28/09/2022 11:08

I think at my centre everyone was getting the new Moderna one (there were some younger people there so presumably HCW or vulnerable). The new bivalent Pfizer has been approved but I don’t think stocks are available yet, happy to be corrected though.

There are still large numbers of people who haven’t had their third dose yet, presumably they might be offered the “old style” Pfizer (also some people may have been allergic to Moderna in the past so wouldn’t be offered it).

omega4ever · 28/09/2022 11:15

@MrsFezziwig that's really helpful... Thank you all. Hopefully I'll get the moderna then. 🤞

My mum had a booster yesterday and it was the standard Pfizer one. I have to say I agree I can't see the point of having one that only really works against the original strain.

UrsulaPandress · 28/09/2022 11:17

I wasn’t given a choice.

Never had Covid. Usually very resilient so I’ve been shocked at the effect it had on me. Would put me off having another.

Obviously I was “lucky” then (assuming it was your mum’s fourth dose). I was pretty keen to have the new Moderna as I’m one of the few people I know who hasn’t actually had Omicron, but if you read up on it a bit there doesn’t actually seem to be a huge difference in effectiveness between that and the old style ones.

PeloFondo · 28/09/2022 11:26

I had the new moderna one and the flu jab too but they only had the moderna

TrashPandas · 28/09/2022 11:28

I had a booster last week and wasn't given an option.

The Moderna reportedly gives more side effects.

Not at my centre. All the older people in the line were getting something else - when it was my (33) turn, the nurse said she had to get a different vaccine for me due to age, and she came back with the Moderna.

sageandbasil · 28/09/2022 11:32

Ive had 3x Pfizer's and felt fine but booked my booster which is the Moderna and assumed I'd be fine- it's the day before I'm going to a christening where I'm godmother so after reading this I think I'll re arrange it!

MayThe4th · 28/09/2022 11:35

The pharmacist who did mine on Saturday explained that they’re all giving the Moderna one this time round.

I felt ill for 24 hours, but I wouldn’t let that put you off.

It’s better than having COVID.

ancientgran · 28/09/2022 11:35

I've had two Astra Zeneca, one Pfizer. Absolutely fine, barely felt the injection and no issues. Had the Moderna on Friday, most painful injection I've ever had, I have no idea what happened. That night my arm was paralysed and I nearly went to A&E as I was so scared. I was also in pain. Took 4 days to feel properly better.

I've always been pro vaccination but I'm not sure what I will do next time we are offered a booster.

Dimsumbun · 28/09/2022 11:39

Had Astra zeneca felt terrible, last Moderna I just felt tired. Not had a call up yet but am having flu jab on Saturday.

Berlinlover · 28/09/2022 11:45

I was very ill when I received both Moderna vaccines. I haemorrhaged for two days when I received the Pfizer booster. No more vaccines for me.

WimbyAce · 28/09/2022 11:54

I have only had 2 jabs, pfizer and was fine both times but won't be having any more jabs. Had covid in June and no real issues so don't see the need.

It might not be the same next time. I had covid and no symptoms at all, I only found out on a routine test. Had it in February and it turned into pneumonia, I was flat on my back for 8 weeks and still not back to how I was.

mrsjohnnylawrence · 28/09/2022 12:01

I don't know man, how many are you up for having? You know I've never had a covid jab and never had covid or been ill at all this past year?

Never had a flu jab either.
