If you were Rishi Sunak what would you be thinking right now?

I have an image of him smirking whilst thinking "I told you so".

I worked with a lot of people like this and the ones who you relied on for crunching the numbers were usually introverted and simply would never want to be a leader. He seems more shy and retiring? A simple humility to him?

ifonly4 · 27/09/2022 16:20

I've pondered this myself. I think he feel exacerbated and disappointment in that a party he's believed in could do what they've done in the last week.

Hes probably relieved this shit show didnt happen on his watch.

This shit show didn't "happen" on anyone's watch

This shit show "was done" by someone. In this case some two: Truss and Kwarteng.

If the Tory membership had elected Sunak we wouldn't be here.

Well, being a power-hungry twat seems to get you into power. That's what she wanted. That's what she got.

VeryImportantTitle · 27/09/2022 16:28

She'll make a deal with Putin next. I wonder what the EU or Biden think of her appointment. The queen died two days after shaking her hand. Just sayin'

Ilikewinter · 27/09/2022 16:30

I think his silence speaks volumes .... he must be thinking ' i told you so' but is probably equally horrified at the shit show storm Truss has caused.

Wonder if she gets booted out if he would take the job??

VeryImportantTitle · 27/09/2022 16:34

Want to guess what our current Chancellor of Exchequer studied and where he studied it?

CredibilityProblem · 27/09/2022 16:42

Kwarteng has a PhD in economic history from Harvard. In theory he's very well qualified to be Chancellor, unfortunately he's also a swivel-eyed ideologue.

It seems he wants to repeat history lol.

Thanks everyone - yes I think he went into politics for the right reasons, he certainly does not need the money, far from it. To me, his economic principles made sense. He had to do something drastic to deal with lockdown and for the most part I think he called it right - but he always said this would have to be paid for in due course and he sounded willing to follow through on that.

Truss is awful. The rumours that back benchers are sending in no confidence letters do not surprise me at all.

But Economic History isn't Economics, is it?

DIanaRiggFan · 27/09/2022 16:58

I’m interested: does the current chancellor have any financial qualifications/experience?

Rishi would have been a much better PM

As above, a doctorate in Economic History from Harvard and time working as a financial analyst at Chase and with a hedge fund. Not the best qualified chancellor we've ever had but far from the worst. That's not where the problem lies......

listsandbudgets · 27/09/2022 17:03

@DIanaRiggFan Everything you (n)ever wanted to know about Kwasi Kwarteng

He's been a financial analyst... I wonder how he analyses this sh*t show

TooBigForMyBoots · 27/09/2022 17:11

If I was Rishi, I'd be thinking "Fuck them" and go somewhere his talent will be useful and appreciated.

MarshaBradyo · 27/09/2022 17:15

So many on here fell for the wealth angle though and if you said it was irrelevant it did not go down well

It’s such a shame that SM falls for this stuff and amplifies it

MrAutumnal · 27/09/2022 17:18

I’m no Tory but would have ‘happily’ had Rishu as PM every day of the week and twice on Sundays compared to Truss and Co and the shit show that was always going go happen. Still surprised she got in. Truss changes her mind on everything and Kwasi was always in line for the Chancellor role after his support of her. His right wing flavour of Conservatism is no secret.

I don’t think theoretical economics is the same thing as practical business experience at all. This is not a theoretical exercise. This is peoples jobs, homes, heating and food on the table.

They need to be out.

CredibilityProblem · 27/09/2022 18:06

As a Labour voter I thought Rishi was pretty much the perfect candidate: sufficiently reasonable that he wouldn't wreck the joint in the next two years but sufficiently voter-unfriendly that he'd be easy to beat in the next election.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 27/09/2022 18:20

Ha ha ha, Well it turns out, I see that Liz Truss ain't quite the lark that thought she was going to be. Told you so.

Pedallleur · 27/09/2022 18:31

That 20 million I gave to Crispen Odey will have more than doubled.

verdantverdure · 27/09/2022 19:53

Bouledeneige · 27/09/2022 14:15

He entirely predicted that cutting taxes and borrowing in the way Liz Truss predicted would cause a run on the pound.

Everybody who understands such things did tbh.

I expect Rishi Sunak is making a new campaign video as we speak.

GreenLunchBox · 27/09/2022 19:55

AppleBag · 27/09/2022 13:44

Nope. If he were just interested in money, he wouldn't be in politics. I suspect he's weighing up the possibility of a return once Liz Truss resigns after the next GE.

Are people really this naive?

Obviously the MP and minister salary is peanuts to him, but most of the Tories see power as a way of lining the pockets of themselves and their friends and family

Sh05 · 27/09/2022 19:56

Super smug that someone else is taking the blame for his over flowing pockets.

BanannaSplitz · 27/09/2022 19:57

What should I spend my millions on?

It's not naivety at all. I think someone like RS is motivated by the desire for power, not money. I think if anything that's more worrying than being motivated by money. If he wanted money, he'd have stayed in his previous career.

I'm not commenting on Tory MPs generally, but on Rishi specifically.
