What can i do to make London water taste better?

Recently moved from Scotland to London. I drink loads of tea and the water in London is awful. I know ive moved from a soft water area to a hard water area, but is there anything i can do to improve the taste? I rent so cant change taps or anything like that. Would a water filter jug help?

I don't live in London but I live in an area of Kent where our water is basically chalk, a water filter jug does really help a lot

I agree with you about the water.
I used to live in the Midlands where the water was much softer.

We use a filter jug which we keep in the fridge.

Water tastes much nicer.

Oh, and the best tea I've ever had was in Scotland!

Add gin.

MrsMoastyToasty · 27/09/2022 10:58

What does it taste of? Water shouldn't have a taste.

Request everyone in London stop pissing in it.

oh… and move back to Scotland - your hair will thank you too. 😉

MsRinky · 27/09/2022 12:30

Yes, filter it. I use Phox refillable filters in an old Brita jug rather than the single-use plastic filters.

Bloodybridget · 27/09/2022 12:32

We just keep a bottle of water in the fridge for drinking, but it would probably taste even better if we used a filter as pps have said.

BuildersTeaMaker · 27/09/2022 12:48

If you are drinking straight water then chill it well. Keep 2 large bottles of chilled tap water in the fridge and refill each one as it empties.

the cold sort of numbs the mouth taste buds 🤣🤣🤣🤷🏼‍♀️

you could always buy a filter jug as well and refill the bottles form that.

use filtered water for the kettle always-otherwise your kettle life span will be about 2 years. Ditto iron- fill with filtered water. And use Cleans/line scale remover products in the washing machine and dishwasher regularly -monthly or they’ll not last 5 years.

finally, while I’m on a roll…if you have very young children cut down massively on baths and showers ….hard water is now thought to be one of the many triggers for eczema (though only if genetic disposition). My 30 year old son is testament to that- even now horrible eczema.

Totally confused by the pissing in tap water comment!!
You need a water filter, either a jug or you can get them fitted to your kitchen tap.
But I would probably move back to Scotland.

emmathedilemma · 27/09/2022 13:08

@BuildersTeaMaker oh that's interesting about the eczema, I was abroad last week and have come back with horrendous skin all over my torso and tops of arms / legs. I thought it was heat rash but maybe the shower water is partly to blame too......

Whataretheodds · 27/09/2022 13:26

I have a filter jug and filter kettle.
I am a honeowner and consifering a filtration system.

ChocolateCroissantCafe · 27/09/2022 13:37

Brita style filters help, but we also found it was better to use a tea with a stronger flavour (Marks and Spencer's tea covers the water taste a bit).

Augend23 · 27/09/2022 13:44

Filter jug for the kettle - always.

And agreed re chilling water to drink straight.

gatehouseoffleet · 27/09/2022 14:45

Interesting, I actually think the water in London tastes better than anywhere else! I agree in other parts of the south-east it tastes like chalk.

However, you might want to invest in a water softener if you are allowed to. Otherwise a water filter jug.

We don't have one where we live now, but in our old house which was only about 6 miles away, and a bit closer to London, the water was horrible if it wasn't filtered.

Me too! London water was lovely, tasted great and always icy cold from the tap!

Where I live now the water tastes vile and if you boil it it tastes like TCP. Even filtering doesn't completely stop it.

Notmeonlyme · 27/09/2022 15:24

Move?

YorkshireTeaCup · 27/09/2022 15:26

Lived in London for 10yrs and still cant get used to the taste of the water. We keep a Brita filter jug in the fridge and just keep it topped up. Not perfect but better than straight out of the tap.

WalkingOnMarshmallow · 05/10/2022 19:42

I'm surprised no one has mentioned these: www.abelandcole.co.uk/active-charcoal-water-filter-coil-black-blum these were a total game changer in our house. The water tastes so nice it doesn't even have to be refrigerated!

TastesLikeFlavourlessFizz · 05/10/2022 19:46

Berkey filter.

Its still nowhere near as good as the north/Scotland but it’s drinkable.

silentpool · 05/10/2022 19:48

I have a ceramic water filter, which has been amazing.

WildFlowerBees · 05/10/2022 19:55

Phox filter we use ours in our Brita filter. No longer need to drink bottled water.

Imissmoominmama · 05/10/2022 19:59

We live in a very hard water area. I have a Phox filter- it’s great.

IloveJudgeJudy · 05/10/2022 20:03

Also, change your tea. I'm in Kent and like Clipper but it's quite pricy. I agree you need a strong tea. Tesco Assam is also nice or Terkel or Yorkshire. My aunt lives in S London and uses Yorkshire.

Spanielsarepainless · 05/10/2022 20:13

Use Yorkshire tea.
