Recently moved from Scotland to London. I drink loads of tea and the water in London is awful. I know ive moved from a soft water area to a hard water area, but is there anything i can do to improve the taste? I rent so cant change taps or anything like that. Would a water filter jug help?

What does it taste of? Water shouldn't have a taste.
(Ex water company employee).

Hertfordshire water has tasted like chlorine since 1976. (Old lady here!) I live in Scotland now and the tap water is a treat.

Filtering may help.

Deff get a water filter jug. I moved from wales to London and the water is vile!

Another vote for Brita filter, I don't really notice the taste difference but helps keep the kettle cleaner

Water filter

Softplayhooray · 17/11/2022 12:27

Are you drinking London water straight from the tap OP? Brave lady 😄

I've had success with making it taste better by not drinking it and getting bottled water instead, but to be more cost effective these days, I've resorted to a filter.

For those confused by drinking water and pee, here's a link: www.groundwatergovernance.org/is-london-tap-water-recycled-sewage/

Tbh officials have been trying to persuade people drinking treated sewage is a great idea since 2013!

Add whisky? 😁

I moved to London from Scotland for a temporary secondment. First thing I did when I arrived at my apartment was make a cup of tea. Second thing I did was get to the nearest Argos before it shut and purchase a water filter jug. It did make it taste somewhat less horrible…

Filtered water for tea (though even then, it's not the best tea water), and for cold water, when I lived in London, I used to bring those Tessaire cordials, the sugar-free kind, back from France and put a dash in. I think they also stock them in Waitrose, or used to.

I moved from a soft water area to Kent for university and OMG it was a shock! Descaling?? What's that?!! Awful South East hard water argh!

I've lived in London for years now and NEVER drink tap water. I drink 3 litres of water a day but and it all comes via my Brita filter jug that lives in the fridge. I have a separate filter built into my (Gaggia Titanium) coffee machine.

Useful link for people experiencing problems with the taste of their water. Here

Am I the only person who can’t see the words ‘London water’ written down without pronouncing them in my head as ‘Landan waw’ah’ ? 😁

silentpool · 21/11/2022 06:18

I bought a ceramic water filter. What a difference!

BookedOut · 21/11/2022 06:33

I have the opposite issue, London water tastes good to me (though I agree you need Yorkshire tea and regular kettle descaling) but I dislike the taste of soft water. I think it’s all a question of what you’re used to.

boysarethebest · 21/11/2022 06:36

London water tastes great. My kids always complain about the water in Birmingham when we visit relatives. Even though I grew up with it it tastes chemically to me

CheapWine · 21/11/2022 06:39

My in laws take a large bottle of tap water back to Surrey from Yorkshire every time they visit. YANBU OP.

You've gone from the best to the worst in one swoop.

Yes, filter it. I use Phox refillable filters in an old Brita jug rather than the single-use plastic filters.

This.

Thank goodness for the Waitrose Essentials range. Without it many of the 9 million people in London would die of thirst. Heaven knows what the people who shop in Asda drink.
