Is anyone up? Awaiting a 111 call back.

I rang 111 at 10 for my 6 year old and told I'd be called back within an hour....still waiting and worried sick. My poor child wants to be in her own bed but her sisters sleeping in their bedroom and the clinician will want me to wake her up when they eventually phone back, she's currently napping in between coughing her lungs up, she's had a low grade fever since Saturday evening and her nails and lips now look purplish/bluish (though not constantly, they seem to get better then worse again). She's not wheezing or gasping for breath, although she's had no voice since Sunday so it's a little hard to say whether or not she can talk normally. I feel like I'm torturing myself at the moment because I have no idea what to do here, but if it were an emergency 111 would have sent us straight to hospital and certainly wouldn't be leaving it this long for a 1 hour call back surely?

I’m a nurse and those pictures look completely healthy to me. It’s so hard not to worry when our children are sick! I hope you’ve managed some sleep and you’re able to see a GP today.

ElizabethBest · 27/09/2022 07:56

Those photos do look completely normal tbh.

KeepOutingMyselfAnotherNameChange · 27/09/2022 08:38

Hope you went to A&E. Out of hours sent my child home with a burst appendix he was so ill. We are never using out of hours again.

I called 111 for my 4 month old last Wednesday, they never called back. I would go to A&E if worried. Hope she's okay x

curlymom · 27/09/2022 09:19

If you are worried just go to a and e but 111 has been a huge waste of time for me. They never call back quickly. Hope the little one is ok

Theonlyoneiknow · 27/09/2022 09:34

Hope all is okay OP.

The nails do, but the lips are shrivelled which would suggest dehydration. A 6 year old in full health should not have shrivelled lips!

Has your dd been eating and drinking?

So sorry to hear this, you must be really worried. For me personally, with lips and fingers turning blue, even periodically, I would go straight to A&E. however, that's easy for me to say as I live 10 mins from a great children's hospital.
I wouldn't wait too much longer, especially if you child seems to get worse. Really hope you get it sorted.

eh?

I'm pale irished skinned, about 50% of the time in winter my lips and nails are blue its certainly not something to bother A&E with its increadibly common.

My 3 kids, DH, mam etc... are all the same, in fact we had a convosation just 2 days ago about how its hit 'that time of year' because our nails are turning blue again.

SunnySusan83 · 27/09/2022 09:45

@mam0918

No it's not common or normal in children who are unwell with fevers. My fingers can occasionally go bluish out in the cold too, but I think the OP knows the difference between that and a child who is indoors, warm and comfortable and struggling for breath during coughing fits. It can be a sign of low oxygen and medical advice has told her to get it checked. Your reply is really is odd to be honest, any unwell child periodically turning blue is a major concern.

Turning blue can be a sign of meningitis, low oxygen, and sepsis.

My son turned blue and was blue lighted to hospital from the GP.

I swear one day one of these stupid comments is going to get someone killed.

SunnySusan83 · 27/09/2022 09:52

@georgarina I wholeheartedly agree. Enormously reckless comment

Are you a troll? You can't be real person.

SummerHouse · 27/09/2022 10:16

You are doing the right thing. I would be concerned about pneumonia - my sister had this and it's not necessarily as serious as it sounds but best to get on the antibiotics if it is the case. Sorry you are going through this with no support. But you are a good mum doing what you think is right. I would do the same.

MiseryWIthAStent · 27/09/2022 10:24

@mam0918

The problem with the op is that people know their children and if it's a SUDDEN blue tinge that indicates low oxygen. I'm assuming the OP would have noticed if over the last 6 years her child had a blueish tinge. If you woke up one day with a purple face do you think you would consult a dr?

ScatteredMama82 · 27/09/2022 10:24

I do hope you got seen OP, and that your DD is doing better.
Your DH - what the hell? He won't take you to OOH and presumably wouldn't watch the younger one, that is why you were considering taking them both with you to hospital? I'm not one for saying LTB, but really that is unforgiveable.

Tabitha888 · 27/09/2022 10:29

Hope she's ok

Ship · 27/09/2022 10:40

Op my daughter had to be admitted recently with bacterial laryngitis (a type of croup they said). She’s also 6. She was sucking in at her ribs and neck and wheezing. Is your daughter sucking in at all when she’s breathing under her ribs? If so then I would get her seen asap. If not and it’s just a bad cough maybe wait and see gp today. If you feel like this is something that cannot wait then call an ambulance.

KevinTheKoala · 27/09/2022 11:37

Sorry for disappearing, my daughters been seen. She is suffering from obstructive sleep apnea(?) Her tonsils are very large which we did know and have been waiting for an ENT appointment for a long time for, obviously waiting lists are huge. She's never suffered quite as badly as last night though, they think because of the virus she's had her tonsils were even more inflamed than usual which is why it was so bad last night. She is much better this morning, although very uncomfortable with her throat, but I have been told to chase up the ENT appointment to see where she is on the list.

And the tinge was extremely slight and in hindsight I did over react to it but they really weren't their normal colour and coupled with how awful the cough sounds I was scared.

BananaFronkle · 27/09/2022 11:55

Pleased your daughter's been seen, OP. It's hard when they're little. The doctors would rather see a child than not. Glad you know what it is now. Take care of yourself. Hope your DD feels better very soon and you get the appointment. No harm in politely chasing every week or so in case cancellations come up.

ArabellaScott · 27/09/2022 12:01

Really glad your daughter's okay, OP. It always all seems much worse in the middle of the night! Hope you both get a good rest, now.

Pixiedust1234 · 27/09/2022 12:48

See? You were right to call up. Sleep apnea can be life threatening.

Go get some decent sleep then start figuring out how to get rid of DH. If a partner can't step up when a child needs hospital urgently then he is of zero use to you. Who needs hangers on dragging you down.

Allthestarsabovemyhead · 27/09/2022 12:55

Was she seen in a&e or ooh?

Glad you were seen. I don't think you did over-react. Trust your instincts. You know if something's not right. There's no point in "if only..." if you take no action. Hope the ENT appointment comes through swiftly.

My DS had sleep apnoea. Had his tonsils out and the change is AMAZING. Keep chasing x
