Wisdom tooth removal

Having one out soon, lower one and impacted. I have been suffering with pain in my jaw on that side, sharp pains sometimes and other times an ache. it's in one very specific spot which is where the facial artery crosses the mandible. Also my facial artery throbs and feels raised, maybe muscle swelling underneath it the doctor said? ( i have had it checked out with a scan and all looks normal) aaaanyway. Has anyone ever experienced this and found that after recovery, their pain went away? I am so scared it will make things worse. I just want some hope!

I delayed having two back teeth removed (thinking it would just get better!) one was a wisdom; I don't think it was impacted but the pain before was so terrible (worse than childbirth) and everything was fine after, there was the odd twinge for a few days after but really nothing in comparison. Good luck.

Dontknownow86 · 25/09/2022 17:25

Why are you having the tooth removed? If it's infected or has decay then it will hurt and removing it will resolve this (after the initial discomfort of healing).

I had all four impacted removed under a GA in hospital and all pain went after recovery from the op. It is SORE after the op!

MoggyMittens23 · 25/09/2022 18:12

Having it removed because it's affecting the tooth next to it (have had to have a root canal in that one now after 4 fillings in the past year!) but there is active decay in the wisdom tooth. However, it only hurts if the endodontist makes me bite down on something, it doesn't hurt every day. But the pain in my jaw particularly from where the artery meets the jawline, really hurts. I am so hoping this solves it.

I had a very stuck one removed by a dental student in a teaching hospital in London back in the day. I did not like the experience, but I was much better numbed up than the poor guy next to me. I felt very sorry for myself for a couple of soup and non smoking days later. Mostly cos the not smoking was PAINFUL.

Then my face returned to pre wisdom tooth stuck normal.

I have never forgotten how bloody painful it was until somebody mentioned I could get it done for free by a student. I’ve had every sympathy with teething babies since then.

I'm having a general so not worried about the actual removal. Although a little afraid of how much pain I will be in after!

I'm having a consultation for all four of mine on Thursday ... they've all gone bad no pain but all impacted
I can't wait to have them out!! I'm a bit nervous but it has to be done
I'm actually more nervous about any nerve damage. Blush

Ohdearnotagain76 · 25/09/2022 20:19

I had all 4 of mine out before they even came through, was only 14 and they weren’t even painful but dentist told my mum I’d suffer if I didn’t. My faced swelled up for about a fortnight and I was in agony for about a week. Nephew (23)recently had 1 of his out and was in pub few day later

Reggiebo · 25/09/2022 20:37

Mine out at a dental college many many years ago. Only had needle in gum. Wouldn't come out .. promptly fainted in the chair. Vowed never to go again. Roll on 15 years and much rot and pain. Needed 5 out at once. Lesson was quickly learnt now always go for a check up.

F4chrissakes · 25/09/2022 21:02

If it's impacted get it out as soon as you can, lest it abscesses. Yes, wisdom tooth removal is at the very least uncomfortable, but nothing like the pain of an abscess. Says one who knows from bitter experience.

NeedWineNow · 25/09/2022 22:19

I had all 4 of mine out in my early twenties. One had impacted and was growing down into the next tooth, one was coming through in two halves and the other two were causing a lot of pain generally. My mum worked in our local health centre which also did dental so the dental surgeon agreed to do it there under GA and then mum's friend popped me in the car and ran me home - I was tucked up in bed 20 mins after the op.

The swelling lasted a week and I couldn't eat much more than soup or scrambled egg,, but the relief once the swelling and pain wore off was immense.

Sniffypete · 25/09/2022 22:24

I had two wisdom teeth out earlier this year. They hurt for a week or so after, but then I realised that I couldn't remember the last time my jaw or ears didn't hurt or I didn't have a headache! So wish I could've gotten them removed years ago!!!

My wisdom tooth has just cut through (I'm 24), and the pain isn't nice. It's hellish but I can't get a dentist appointment anywhere and 111 won't help Sad

I don't think it will be as bad as you expect. I always find the build up to a necessary medical procedure the worse part.
If you can try to keep the few days after free incase you need a little recovery time, I found after 48 hours I was feeling fine. (Took ibuprofen when needed)

The worse part was feeling the pressure from the dentist removing the wisdom tooth but as you're having general you won't have to endure that part.
Think positively about the removal, you will (hopefully) be pain free after and the worry about any future issues with it will be banished. 🙂

MoggyMittens23 · 26/09/2022 09:22

Thank you for all these positive stories. I am praying it takes away the jaw pain (actual tooth not painful at all really) not looking forward to the few days after but DH is off work to blend my food and spoon feed me 😆

Not wisdom tooth but I had a molar removed recently, because of a dental abscess (that I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy). The worst pain of the abscess (before the huge swelling) was the jaw ache and I'm pleased to say that once the tooth was out, that specific pain completely disappeared. It had been hell on earth up to that point so I was glad to have the tooth gone.

Actual recovery from tooth extraction has been a bit protracted. I am 10 days after and still a bit swollen and tender, being careful with food but it's healed really well, and no infection or anything.

Good luck OP! Dental pain is the worst.

@jumblemumblet my private dentist referred me to the NHS for removal, so it may be worthwhile doing that too.

Same, I went private, although I have insurance so the removal is private too. But he was going to refer me on the NHS initially, so if you can afford the initial appointment you might be able to get seen quicker that way.

I prefer to have extractions under local. The two I had under general the recovery was SO rough, and they weren't even wisdom teeth; bruising and swelling and pain for days - but the extractions I've had under local the pain after wasn't nearly as bad and I wasn't bruised or swollen at all. With all of them the pain caused by the tooth vanished immediately, but recovery pain has varied from almost nothing to feeling like I'd been in a fight with Rocky.

My theory is they're more gentle with you under local because you're awake and can still feel what they're doing even if no pain. Under general they can yank and pummel your poor face as much as they want! So I'd say from my experience if you're going under general, get some ice packs and painkillers ready because you might be quite sore!

I needed mine out before lockdown i put it off now it’s snapped in half any advice on pain relief waiting for hospital appointment to have removed

MoggyMittens23 · 09/10/2022 15:00

i had it out on Wednesday. All going ok ish I think! I didn’t have any swelling and no bleeding. The site itself is sore and stinging though. Almost itchy. There is also an ulcer right by it 😩 I do have a few stitches but right behind the back molar ( I can’t see it) DH said there’s a blackish hole and it’s more open looking than yesterday. Dies any of this sound normal? It should still be sore right? (Watching out for the dreaded dry socket or an infection!!)

OP posts:
Mossstitch · 09/10/2022 15:34

I've found that the pain seems to last for about a week at least after and I thought the hole looked bigger a few days in, maybe its because swelling going down around it makes it look bigger🤷 one of my sons had wisdom teeth removed under GA and looked like a hamster for a week, the other one is now on waiting list as impacted and he's had an abscess under one which was agony. They are more trouble than they are worth aren't they😬 keep up with the salt water rinses and hopefully be feeling much better by wednesday👍

MoggyMittens23 · 09/10/2022 15:47

@Mossstitch ah that makes sense about the hole, hopefully it’s that! Ouch, your poor son. I really hope so 💪
