What action are people taking if you're angry/appalled/anxious about the new mini-budget?

Does anybody else feel that we as a society need to at least voice our concerns and not sit back and suffer and struggle while the rich get richer at our expense?

I am already worried about the next budget if we just let her and her cronies get away with it. She is taking working people for fools.

I've wrote to my MP. Now what?!

Genuine question, but will writing to my MP help? Obviously it would depend on you MP I assume. I'm in Richmondshire so my MP is Rishi

It all feels kind of pointless. Just have to vote them out next GE (which is a while away unfortunately)

I think it will be worth doing even if you're in a safe Tory seat. The Tories won't want to lose their work from the last GE and they need to know how angry we are. They need to know they'll lose votes. Liz Truss hasn't had to win public votes..yet

I'm hoping for general strikes. When supermarket workers, cleaners, carers nurses, bin men all refuse to work for a week. Might remind people what a 'key worker us.'

Interesting that many of the posters on this thread who are willing to take some action are people who actually benefit from the changes...

Indeed. Contrary to what the Tory government seems to think, not all of us are fundamentally greedy and selfish.

Many of us actually want to live in a society where everyone has enough to eat and can afford to heat their homes, and we're happy to pay into the system in order to achieve that. Who'd have thunk it?!

Saltyandvinegar · 25/09/2022 13:29

I was disgusted. We benefit massively from the cuts. We don't need it. It won't change our spending. Then I've seen a couple of articles of how bankers In Edinburgh will cross the border and want to pay tax here. The same for Americans. I now think the plan has a chance to work. The thing this country needs right now is money.

RosesAndHellebores · 25/09/2022 13:29

The £400, £2,500 price cap, and penny off income tax for all, together with reversal of the 1.25% NI increase for all didn't happen then?

The support hasn't been targeted enough to help the poorest, no.

The income tax cut disproportionately benefits higher earners, while the lowest earners are disproportionately affected by the cost of living crisis. And it doesn't help the lowest earners at all, or people who are unable to work due to disability, caring responsibilities etc.

icelolly12 · 25/09/2022 13:35

The £400, £2,500 price cap... this is debt that we/future generations pay back...

Penny off income tax for all Sorry not sure what you mean here? Are you talking about the 19% personal tax free allowance down from 20% which will kick in in April?

Together with reversal of the 1.25% NI increase for all Again this will give me about 30 quid a week... many low earners won't earn enough to benefit at all, neither will it benefit the disabled/pensioners etc. Plus its removal is very short sighted as we're an ageing population and social care and pensions need investing in.

I'm resigned, in same way I was about many Covid controls that I didn't agree with. Am thinking hard about how to protect our own assets from inflation wave (have been thinking hard on this for 2 years).

I live in a safe Tory seat. I'd give the MP a piece of my mind if he came to door, but I'm not seeking him out. It's a strongly Brexit-supporting but WC area, so I suspect the MP (very pro-Brexit himself, son of local UKIPer) will get a fair amount of complaining from people who MP does see as his important type of constituents. I was never going to vote Tory, anyway.

TwigTheWonderKid · 25/09/2022 13:44

I'll write to my MP but I don't expect him to care. I live in one of the richest boroughs in London and I'm sure he knows he's safe.

It's definitely time to take to the streets, something I did in my youth over Poll Tax but didn't expect to have to do again.

I think the other important thing is to keep talking about this, but not just in a echo chamber of people who share your views. If we can't at least begin to understand other people's points of view we will never be able to move forward.

Carmakomelian · 25/09/2022 13:47

I want to do something, I'm going to look into rallies. I'm not sure what help writing to my Labour MP would so really - I'm sure she'd agree wholeheartedly but it feels like complaining to the wrong person.

RoseyLentil · 25/09/2022 13:48

I've joined Unite.

I have voted for strike action for the very first time on my life. I am mid 50s and am very concerned with the way things are going.

Donating to your local foodbank might be a good start.

Have been doing this for a long tone, sadly.

flashbac · 25/09/2022 13:53

Solidarity OP. I'm despairing but trying to keep cool for my own mental health. I was thinking of starting a ranty thread in AIBU but what's the point.
Can't believe the normal working people that still support these criminals. They are also partly responsible for the people that will go hungry and cold due to the pound tanking and the public purse being raided.
Hope we can all do something constructive to rid us of the parasites currently in power.

Good point. I've joined a Union too - I feel like it's a privilege to have the option to do so. They asked if I wanted my subs to be donated to the Labour party. I declined, seeing as they're a bit embarrassed about their own MPs showing up on picket lines Hmm

BluOcty · 25/09/2022 14:12

The Tories have just lost one seat that they considered 'safe' so it's absolutely worth writing to your MP. There will be a lot of deeply unhappy Tories out there that totally disagree with the level of borrowing (for starters) so I don't see any dear being safe after this.

I've joined Enough is Enough and am also following the RSPB. It's mind blowing the bid to tear up nature protections as fast as possible. It's not just the poor that have been shafted but a lot of our natural environment too.

roarfeckingroarr · 25/09/2022 14:19

Vote for a different government party at the next election. Write to your MP if you wish - if they're a Tory, their staff will respond to say thanks for your concerns but I disagree because of x y and z. If they're opposition, their staff will respond with the opposite.

Democracy.

roarfeckingroarr · 25/09/2022 14:21

@icelolly12 could you explain how the rich are getting richer "at your expense" please? The mini budget allows high earners keep more of their own earned income. It's not being taken from you.

The RSPB? While I, too, think birds deserve protection, I'm not sure how they can change fiscal policy.

You're right. They are getting to keep more of the money that they earn. Meanwhile, the poorest and most vulnerable in our society are struggling to put food on their tables and heat their homes.

If you think that's OK, then by all means, carry on voting Tory. It's a democracy, and you have every right to be greedy.

Shinyandnew1 · 25/09/2022 14:31

Returned my union ballot to support strike action.

The planned corporation tax increases (from 19% to 25%) are now no longer happening. This is tax taken away that would benefit the country, the public purse, public services (which the poorer rely on most). These companies are earning money at our expense - a.) us spending money and b.) us grinding away working for them and giving nothing back in return.

The energy cap is debt costing potentially over one billions pounds that we will have to pay back. US the working public. Rather than do the sensible thing of issuing a windfall tax, the cost is borne by us/our children. How is this fair?!

The so called tax cuts will increase inequality, meaning that low income workers have to work harder and harder to keep their head above water.

Because the rich are not paying their fair share into the public coffers. Everyone paying the same is not fair and fiscally irresponsible. There's also talk of rich Tories shorting the pound, and the pound has crashed spectacularly in recent days, due to the budget. The economy is a basket case. Cutting taxes for the rich is the worst thing to do at this time. The rich are asset stripping the nation.
