Do you eat sourdough bread?

I just bought some and it doesn’t do anything for me taste wise (very dry) but it’s supposed to be healthier with less gluten. Is it worth the extra expense?

Yes but I only eat it toasted unless I've made it myself and it's fresh out of the oven. It makes amazing toast.

AnneLovesGilbert · 25/09/2022 08:55

It shouldn’t be very dry.

I love it, it can be delicious. One day I’ll be bothered to try and make it but for now if I see some at a market it’s definitely worth the cost.

Just had some. Quite nasty, really.

I think it's horrible, and I've tried a few different ones. I much prefer 'normal' good quality bread.

BuffaloCauliflower · 25/09/2022 08:57

It shouldn’t be dry. Nice sourdough is lovely. There’s no need for lower gluten unless you’re genuinely intolerant though. It’s just a protein,

SpicePearl · 25/09/2022 08:57

It’s an acquired taste I think and yes, much better toasted! I get it because one piece of sourdough topped with avocado and feta or tomato/mozzarella/balsamic is really filling for lunch compared to white bread sandwiches with ham which is what I used to have.

Airymanning · 25/09/2022 08:57

Hate it

dudsville · 25/09/2022 08:58

It's fabulous bread but should be toasted! Great with eggs or a melted cheese sandwich.

rockyg · 25/09/2022 08:58

personally I think it's a bit overrated, every flippin place now does sourdough with X. The crusts are often too hard for me.

Sago1 · 25/09/2022 08:58

I make my own, it’s much better for the gut, the carbs have been broken down in the proving and baking process.
I’m not sure about less gluten.
It is beautiful fresh from the oven but is best for toast only after 24 hours.
True sourdough should only contain flour, salt and water.
A lot of commercial sourdough contains only a little starter and a lot of yeast.

Kfjsjdbd · 25/09/2022 08:58

Definitely should be toasted. It also gives less of a glucose spike than ordinary bread which is good for maintaining steady blood sugar levels

Aerodactyl · 25/09/2022 08:59

Love it. I eat two slices toasted with dippy eggs every day!

SiobhanSharpe · 25/09/2022 09:00

Even if it's dry it still makes good toast.
(but it shouldn't be very dry to start with. That said, I've found sourdough bread varies greatly in quality anyway. Gail's is usually ok. Waitrose's own seems to lack flavour. )

Spanielsarepainless · 25/09/2022 09:00

Nope. It tastes dry and sour to me. There are nicer things to eat.

I'm fearful that every bite will lead to yet another dental repair for broken teeth. It's ok with avocado and feta but it's really chewy.

Wombat27A · 25/09/2022 09:02

There's sourdough, which should only have 3 ingredients & then there are products labelled sourdough, which are highly processed. It doesn't taste anything like it should.

I make it for the reasons above.

A580Hojas · 25/09/2022 09:03

I absolutely love sourdough, but only toasted. Never as just a slice of bread.

Backtonormalnow · 25/09/2022 09:04

Yes it’s definitely chewy. I didn’t try it toasted. Teenage dc really liked it. I got the Sainsbury’s one.

Yes. It's delicious. Especially toasted with bacon.

WellTidy · 25/09/2022 09:04

I love it. I’ve never made it myself but I buy Bertinet sliced. It hasn’t been available for the last few weeks though so I’ve bought Jason sliced (I think that’s what it is labelled). Both at Waitrose. Both are much easier on the teeth than others I’ve tried.

TheVanguardSix · 25/09/2022 09:06

It’s my favourite bread BUT you can’t just get any ol’ sourdough. The best one is Jason’s white ciabatta sourdough, toasted up and eaten with lashings of butter.
I grew up in ‘70s California and San Francisco style sourdough bread was a staple in our diet.

Climbingthelaundrymountain · 25/09/2022 09:07

Yes, I like it. It's better toasted.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 25/09/2022 09:07

I love it, especially home made. There is a gorgeous little sourdough bakery in York that makes the most amazing bread.

YourWinter · 25/09/2022 09:07

I don’t like it, especially the “artisan” breads that are displayed on a bakery counter uncovered. Not only are they exposed to prodding fingers and exhaled germs, they’re dry and stale an hour after they’re set out, and fairly horrid by the afternoon. Why the high-end supermarkets think it looks more authentic unwrapped is beyond me.

I often make bread, but not sourdough. It’s probably nicer fresh from the oven, but so is most bread!

rockyg · 25/09/2022 09:07

I like this one but weirdly my dc hate the taste. I don't think it's taste too different from other bread.
