Sainsbury's changing rooms closed?

Does anyone know why Sainsbury's have permanently closed changing rooms since Covid? I used to get a few bits for work, but I'm not buying without trying and as I live a good few miles from my local store it's a faff taking it home to try on the having to drive back and return if not right. Surely closing changing rooms is damaging sales?

I don't know but I agree! Maybe they think most people will buy anyway then lose the recipt/wouldn't be bothered to return items (cynical)

purpleme12 · 25/09/2022 00:19

I thought it was our store
Is it every store?
It really annoys me too

CrapBucket · 25/09/2022 00:21

Asda have done the same. I rarely buy supermarket clothes as they so often have a wierd fit on me. Now I never buy them at all.

I thought it was just our local store. I ended up buying £100 worth of clothes to try on at home after spending ages looking before I realized I the fitting rooms were shut.
None of it looked good so it all went back. I won't bother looking for clothes there again unless I can try on in store.

RogersOrganismicProcess · 25/09/2022 00:25

Tesco is the same too. I mortify my kids by trying stuff on over my clothes instead.

ellieboolou · 25/09/2022 00:26

Yep ours has permanently closed too, although our large Tesco one is intermittently open.

@CrapBucket I'm the same, it was very rare to find the clothes size that I am actually fit. Tried 2 blouse's on in Tesco both size 16, similar shape and design but one was massive and the other I couldn't button up

TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination · 25/09/2022 00:26

I don't mind as I'd rather take clothes home to try on anyway. I have, in the past, been guilty of not returning things that don't fit, but bestie, her daughter or the charity shop benefit, so it's not a total lost cause!!

and now it's (Starbucks) spicy pumpkin latte time of year, it's suddenly much less of a hassle to do returns 😂

It was the first time I've been in for AGES the other day & I was very surprised to see them still closed but not removed. It's a huge area in our local one. That's a lot of non profit floor space being wasted.

PreferAnimals · 25/09/2022 09:26

I did ask at my local Sainsbury's if the changing rooms would ever reopen and was told they won't. I understand it was a hassle for them during covid times, but I fail to see the logic now? The last things I wanted to try I used the toilets there, but not very convenient and a bit gross!

I agree OP, it stops me buying from them as I can’t really afford to buy a load of stuff to take it home to try on and bring most of it back.

RichardsGear · 25/09/2022 09:31

Our Sainsbury's still has an open changing room, but Asda doesn't. It's a bit of a pain having to take a chance, but the shop is close by so not too much hassle to return.

sashagabadon · 25/09/2022 09:31

Changing rooms need staffing, sorting out, returning items etc and they are basically a management headache a lot of the time. Plus perhaps lots of stealing used to go in in them.
I would imagine they’ve decided the benefits do not outweigh the costs

WhatALoadOfWankyness · 25/09/2022 09:35

Christ , can you imagine trying things on in a public loo , gross. That has put me off supermarket clothing completely now

Georgeskitchen · 25/09/2022 10:05

Main reason is they don't want to pay someone to staff the changing rooms. Same reason they have very few tills open and the great customer service they used to be renowned for has gone down the toilet

woodstocky · 25/09/2022 10:10

Every sainsburys, Asda and Tesco I've been to recently have closed theirs. It's so frustrating and means I just don't bother buying any clothes as it's a pain to go back and return them.

Halfofyou · 25/09/2022 10:21

Our sainsburys closed their changing rooms during covid and didn’t reopen them. A few weeks ago they took them
away completely and the space is now part of the shop floor, so I’m guessing that’s it now. Luckily I live very near so it’s not too much hassle to return stuff, but no good for lots of people who dont. Tbh their clothes are awful at the moment anyway!

cansu · 25/09/2022 10:25

It depends on the store I think. Our local one still has them closed but another an hour away has them open again. I agree it puts me off buying.

cansu · 25/09/2022 10:26

Agree also that the clothes have really gone down hill. I used to really like Tu but the stuff recently is very poor.

TakeYourFinalPosition · 25/09/2022 10:27

Ours have been open again for ages now. I don’t buy much from there but I’d buy nothing without the changing room!

Doubleraspberry · 25/09/2022 10:28

Ours is open too. It’s a massive store with a big clothes section so maybe worth the staffing investment for the floor space? Or at least it was open in July when I was last looking at clothes.

Yorkshireswithallroasts · 25/09/2022 10:32

The changing rooms are open in our local Sainsburys too. Also in all three of our local tescos. Can't comment on Asda as never go there. Sainsburys cafe however...I'm still upset about that!

Thesearmsofmine · 25/09/2022 10:38

Our Sainsbury cafe is still open but it’s awful now, mainly just drinks and cakes/pastries(when they have any out, which they often don’t) and it closes early. It was always so busy, lots of elderly people who was clearly regulars and knew the staff, I used take the dc for dinner once a week after swimming. I don’t think it will stay open much longer.

sofap · 25/09/2022 10:40

The changing rooms in ours closed during covid and they recently did renovations and now they're gone completely!

BananaBlue · 25/09/2022 10:44

I asked recently in my local ish sainsburys and the answer was no staff to keep it open.

I cannot remember the figure but the lady I spoke to said the store staff had been cut by about a third.

Previously she was only on the clothes section but due to shortages had to work anywhere on the floor.

PuttingDownRoots · 25/09/2022 10:48

I sometimes go to one with a dedicated clothes floor. Annoyed me greatly I couldn't try stuff on. Just got the kids stuff as I had no idea what size jeans, or style would fit.

Bananarama21 · 25/09/2022 10:49

I won't buy any clothing I can't try on, to me its basic customer service to have changing rooms, like people say different clothes fit differently. It's like alot of the stores are replacing tills and putting in self service, reducing staff number again. It's completely wrong, sadly its the sign of the times.
