The sad decline of M&S……

GladysGeorgina · 24/09/2022 20:54

I used to work for M&S in the late 80s and early 90s whilst at sixth form and then uni. I loved that job! I was treated well and paid well for my age. The store was always bustling and we would constantly be moving displays around to try to fit all the stock in. Customer service was top priority. I felt quite proud to work for the company and even didn’t mind wearing the truly dreadful uniforms of the time. I feel sad at watching the decline of M&S on the high street. Our local branch looks more sparse every time I go in. Hardly any staff. No identity. I need new work trousers so popped in at 4pm today. I’m in between sizes so chose 5 pairs of trousers and picked up two sizes for each pair. I was confused because both fitting rooms were closed so I asked an assistant. She was quite snotty and told me the fitting rooms close at 4pm each day due to not enough staff on the rota at that time of day. It’s Saturday and the store didn’t close until 6pm ffs. Apparently it’s ok because I can buy all the trousers and try them on at home. No thanks! I don’t want to pay £400 for 10 pairs of trousers and then lug them home, only to have to bring 9 pairs back for a refund. Don’t know why I’m writing this really. Probably because I was irritated and a bit sad too…….and I still don’t have any new work trousers!

Imagine changing the word 'pensioner' for any other protected characteristic and youll see how bigoted that sounds.

It's disgusting isn't it

I can't see any reviews like that?

There were plenty, and M & S refused to taken them down. Threads on here about it if you search for them.

I like the choice of food at service stations. Handy and good quality.
I feel they should sell simple tops like Uniglo - basic long sleeve t shirts in a big range of colours and necklines. Surely simple basics is the way to go.
I see that is how John Lewis has gone with their every day range of household stuff.

I have a st Michael top - deep red velour/velvet cardigan - gets wheeled out every Xmas Day!

I have never seen a man in the women's changing room at Meadowhall. They still have a men's changing room there.

notanothertakeaway · 25/09/2022 08:08

I think they lost their way when they started trying to be fashionable. Should have focused on quality basics. But food is good

caroleanboneparte · 25/09/2022 08:09

M and s is my main shop of choice in our shopping centre since Debenhams shut.

I love the home wares- I get candles, towels and bedsheets from there. Although I was Shock at the £100 cost of a full set of super king size!

Kids uniform is all from there.

I shop in the sales and love the magic jeans.

I like the shaping pants but didn't buy them as they are never on sale and too expensive.

Some food is good for a treat.

caroleanboneparte · 25/09/2022 08:14

Forgot I've also started buying from their beauty section after getting the advent box and missing things that ran out.

I buy perfume from their rather than much more expensive designer ones from boots.

blobby10 · 25/09/2022 08:15

I wish they’d go back to basics- simple tailored shift dresses, lined, in a variety of basic colours with no frills or peplums or stupid puffy or dangly sleeves. I used to get all my work clothes from M&S but don’t anymore

ferneytorro · 25/09/2022 08:15

I worked in one when I was at sixth form so 1989/90, but like the op so after school when it was late night opening for Christmas. I can confirm that there was a hairdresser and the chiropodist came. There was a canteen but you had a plastic card you put money on to buy stuff.

LindseyHoyleSpeaks · 25/09/2022 08:15

Furniture is dire! Two sofas bought 4 years ago, guaranteed for 10 years. Had to have them repaired multiple times as they’re just bad quality. So far at checkmate re replacements. Clearly not fit for purpose. Even the guy who is sent to do repairs is embarrassed 😳 Next step, one of those newspaper Money columns. Not what they used to be at all 🤯

There's plenty of proof that men use the women's changing rooms though, whether you've seen them or not. M & S make clear that men can use them. Also that men post creepy female underwear reviews which M & S leave up despite protests.

Titsflyingsouth · 25/09/2022 08:17

Our town centre one has just closed in favour of a large one in a nearby retail park. The retail park one looks great, but the closure of the town centre one has devastated the town... Our local high street has lost so many shops over the past few years, it feels like this might be the final nail in the coffin.

Some links to men reviewing ladies’ knickers on this current thread. They’re currently on the M+S website.

My big Sainsbo superstore told me that it is likely they will never open the changing rooms again. All kinds of hangovers from Covid have persisted as they are money saving in some cases eg Premier Inn - no hot buffet breakfast now. You have to order what you want.

I don't know how many times this incorrect information about Premier Inn needs to be corrected. It's just not true.

OverTheHillAndDownTotherSide · 25/09/2022 08:33

M+S moderate reviews. So they know. (On other threads on here women report that M+S knickers are now baggy at the front. So they seem to be making their knickers for men now.)

They leave their low paid shop floor staff to deal with the risk of mixed sex changing rooms. Generally speaking that means women get turned away from the lingerie changing rooms in case any men get offended (higher physical risk).

SunnieShine · 25/09/2022 08:37

I think the women's clothes have improved recently and I've bought several things. Sizing is still off, though.

KermitlovesKeyLimePie · 25/09/2022 08:38

@TheRubyRedshoes But you can shop their food online as M&S have outsourced their online shopping via Ocado and have done for a long time now, since Ocado ditched Waitrose.

I do my weekly M&S shop online via Ocado.

I have an M&S food delivery arriving today, including some Christmas items.

They stock the biscuit tin you were after, it's currently out of stock but their full christmas range should start to be available from 27th online.

@TheRubyRedshoes They also stock the cakes you were after. Colin's too!

Not true. I stay for work in Prem Inn and always have a buffet breakfast.

DuchessofAnkh77 · 25/09/2022 08:44

This isn't just M&S though it's everywhere.....We are looking at the decline of the high street - the future is online and town centres will be pub/restaurant hubs.

DuchessofAnkh77 · 25/09/2022 08:45

In fact not decline "death of the High Street"

TheRubyRedshoes · 25/09/2022 08:45

@KermitlovesKeyLimePie

So I've searched Xmas stuff on ocado and biscuit tins I can't find it.

How did you bring it up .

I also get their product's via ocado.
But it's too hard to explain.

I can't go on their website and simply see what food they do at that time in store for me to buy I. Store.

I've bought tons lately too, mostly online though. I feel that they're in competition with next with the numerous brands.
