The sad decline of M&S……

I used to work for M&S in the late 80s and early 90s whilst at sixth form and then uni. I loved that job! I was treated well and paid well for my age. The store was always bustling and we would constantly be moving displays around to try to fit all the stock in. Customer service was top priority. I felt quite proud to work for the company and even didn’t mind wearing the truly dreadful uniforms of the time. I feel sad at watching the decline of M&S on the high street. Our local branch looks more sparse every time I go in. Hardly any staff. No identity. I need new work trousers so popped in at 4pm today. I’m in between sizes so chose 5 pairs of trousers and picked up two sizes for each pair. I was confused because both fitting rooms were closed so I asked an assistant. She was quite snotty and told me the fitting rooms close at 4pm each day due to not enough staff on the rota at that time of day. It’s Saturday and the store didn’t close until 6pm ffs. Apparently it’s ok because I can buy all the trousers and try them on at home. No thanks! I don’t want to pay £400 for 10 pairs of trousers and then lug them home, only to have to bring 9 pairs back for a refund. Don’t know why I’m writing this really. Probably because I was irritated and a bit sad too…….and I still don’t have any new work trousers!

There seems to be inconsistencies between the branches. I don't recognise any of the failings on this thread at the Meadowhall branch.

I get the impression that some posters seem quite gleeful about their demise. I really, really hate online shopping for clothes and footwear. If M and S goes that is one less shop in the ever smaller choice of shops where I can buy clothes and footwear from.

The trousers are so long even the short length

They had some nice clothes but would love to see more Winter skirts

The kids clothes are utterly dire- Primark designs but triple the price

I love the kids clothes and don't see any comparison with Primark (although I love Primark for other things). Especially like the M&S kids shoes, my DD has just bought lovely flowery Doc style boots and their school shoes are really robust.

There's always been a huge variation between branches, the one in my husband's home town was dire, but our current one is great, lots of things I would buy (though can't afford!).

@RampantIvy mine is just full of older lady clothes. Been seeing lots of people hold up and show nice stuff but it isn’t in mine. All targeted for the older lady.

The one in my local town is aimed at an older demographic, and it is closing, but the larger ones have a much wider choice.

@MrsFezziwig no I'm not accusing anyone of making it up, I just don't remember it. But I was 16 and not there for long.

Maybe that's the demographic of the town where you live . A large elderly population?

After reading your post about Marks & Spencer I just wanted to add have you noticed how scruffy the staff’s uniform are now they are even wearing jeans which I don’t feel is the M&S look
I certainly do agree what the lady has said about the store no stock and no staff

It's to save money on staff uniforms.

I've bought a few things online recently that I've liked and collected locally. The last time I shopped in store in Leeds a really lovely assistant helped me find the right size trousers.

I was in M and S this week and thought it was great. Really bustling, the clothes were actually nice and the food section is really good too.

@IamTheBridge hot breakfast buffet at the Premier Inn I stayed at a month ago.

….and the Glasgow one I stayed in 2 weeks ago!

My big Sainsbo superstore told me that it is likely they will never open the changing rooms again. All kinds of hangovers from Covid have persisted as they are money saving in some cases eg Premier Inn - no hot buffet breakfast now. You have to order what you want.

I think so many businesses have hung onto practices that were considered normal during Covid,e.g. not having any changing rooms open,or keeping the public toilets locked. Just an excuse to be lazy in my opinion.

I needed some trousers urgently for DS and our branch failed to deliver yet again.. it seems they are reducing the kids clothing more and more. He's 11 and I couldn't find anything in his age range
