Why do poor/middle-class people vote for the Conservatives?

moneymoneymoneymakestheworldgoround · 24/09/2022 18:26

When the Conservatives protect privileged interests, why would anyone not particularly rich vote for them?
The conservatives are now uncapping bankers' bonuses ffs

I don't hold Tories to the same moral standards as I do Labour. If a party casts itself as the "good" party, they need to live up to it.

That’s why they get away with blatant racism and ignoring the poor because people excuse them for silly reasons.

Crikeyalmighty · 24/09/2022 20:19

@Ahf22 That's a bit of a far reach- Yep all us left of centre people are champagne socialists who look down on 'poor' people- you might like to tell Jess Phillips that who goes out of her way to help people and especially women in her constituency who are really struggling- same with Yvette cooper etc and of course all those working class Tory's are all thoroughly nice folk who go out their way to help anyone too. ? Not that any of them have got a chip on their shoulder or anything?? Life is far more complicated than deciding anyone who votes labour is some kind of smug comfortably off person who hates the poor . Personally I think working hard , getting a bit of luck and being comfortably off , but also having a strong social minded ethic and giving a shit about others is actually 'aspirational' - and if you want to label us champagne socialists , I personally find that more acceptable than champagne I'm all right jacks-

Only three reasons anyone would vote Conservative IMO.

  1. You’re fairly well off (household income of £100k+ or single household of say £50k+) and a bit mean and/or antisocial in worldview - see cuts to public libraries, early years childcare, bullying of disabled people on benefits, targeting of easy targets, be they teachers, immigrants, single mothers etc etc etc - all stuff that most wealthy Tory voters don’t ever really seem to have much of a hard time squaring with their moral compass.

  2. You’ve been misled by the right wing media which dominates the UK, are somehow ignorant of the effects of Tory governments on those with lowish incomes, or are doing it because solely out of habit, because that’s what your parents (who were probably, relatively speaking, a lot better off than you) used to do.

It always amuses me when people talk about the ‘right wing media which dominates the IK’ when we know that the BBC is absolutely dominated by the Left. Do folk like you ever w at home or listen to the news? Dominated by Libby left! It is notorious in the U.K. the SNP has all the media in its picket in Scotland and here’s peopke like you blithely making statements like this! 😀

May i just say I would be proud of this level of satire.

theworldhas · 24/09/2022 20:24

The endless wealth transfer under Tory governments - from the bottom 50-60% of so to the top 1-2% is bad enough. But that’s not much different to what the Republicans or many other right wing Parties do.

But the thing that really makes the British Tories uniquely despicable is how they will always look to scapegoat a particular group in society as a way of galvanising their base and getting them over the line in FPTP. Sometimes it’s immigrants, sometimes it’s disabled people, sometimes people out of work, sometimes teachers, sometimes single parents, or people in unions. But nearly always a fairly poor/vulnerable/easy to target group that can take the blame for everything.

The Conservatives ignore the poor. Labour patronise the poor and then abuse and belittle them when they complain about being patronised. I can see why some people prefer to be ignored.

Crikeyalmighty · 24/09/2022 20:25

@Cillery And the BBC is so dominated by the left that the director general is a Tory government appointed Ex Tory parliamentary candidate and the BBC chairman is a Tory donor.

limitededitionbarbie · 24/09/2022 20:25

I'd be middle class if I moved.
I live in a city the tories voted to let decline.
I'd never vote Tory no matter how much I earned.

theworldhas · 24/09/2022 20:26

@Cillery
thats must be why the BBC’s leadership team is overwhelmingly ex-Tory , and their coverage of the last election was like a Conservative advertisement.

Florenz · 24/09/2022 20:27

The thing with the media is that people choose to buy the newspapers they read or the websites they read. Why doesn't the left-wing news try to become more popular? The Guardian is just depressing to read a lot of the time, it's just negative stories.

SunshineDesserts · 24/09/2022 20:29

@TwigTheWonderKid I largely agree with you, but identity politics doesn't work like that and the details simply aren't important. If you hate the left because the Daily Mail told you to or your a diehard loyalist, or you want to protect your wealth from the big bad left then it really doesn't matter about the specifics, whether that be economic policies, disgusting levels of poverty, disgraceful comments directed at Grenfell families or having parties during lockdown.

Cuts both ways though, the hardline left give Corbyn a free pass on some shocking behaviour and views, and have basically propelled him to sainthood.

HappinesDependsOnYou · 24/09/2022 20:29

Because Labour left a bad taste in people's mouths when Tony Blaire got away with an illegal war and quit leaving Gordon Brown to pick up the pieces. Because the last recession was under labour and people got tired of failings under their Government. Because Labour embarrassed themselves having the likes of Diane Abbott humiliating the party with figures that didn't add up. Everybody knows no one delivers on their manifesto but having it proven to be financially impossible right before voting time and again made many people concerned. I am not a Tory supporter but I cannot say I had faith in Labour last election. I'm not sure on Stammer just yet but desperately hope one day a party will put forward a manifesto and actually deliver it!

Witchofthedales · 24/09/2022 20:31

Just a guess but the right wing press have a lot to answer for, it's creating a sheep mentality.

Ottersmith · 24/09/2022 20:32

Mostly because they are racist and don't want immigration I would have thought. That's one of the reasons that people from Manchester and Liverpool think people in the Midland are fucking idiots. Poor people who vote Tory. Waste of space.

@HappinesDependsOnYou

Who was it who said this?

Three hundred thousand and thirty four, nine hundred and seventy four thousand tests carried out across the UK

SunshineDesserts · 24/09/2022 20:34

@Witchofthedales Yup definitely, and this has been exacerbated by the so-called 'alternative' right wing media, outlets like GB News. They rile up their audience into a frothing frenzy

Smellywellyhoo · 24/09/2022 20:35

They hate poor and working class folk and they always will.

theworldhas · 24/09/2022 20:37

@Sally99

Because the Labour Party are traditionally/realistically the buy now pay later party and it goes against the grain of many middle class voters

And yet now it’s Magic Money Tree bonanza time. But not as serious investment to grow the economy as Labour planned in 2017, but just to dig us out the massive hole which a decade of austerity followed by Brexit has created. The cost of Tory incompetence, economic mismanagement and deteriorating public services is incalculable. Though we know from the governments own figures that Brexit alone will cost the UK at least 2% total GDP long term.

HappinesDependsOnYou · 24/09/2022 20:40

@jgw1 where did I say conservatives didn't lie? I'm just stating that the election campaign for Labour was an utter flop and that's why we are left with these muppets. Both parties came across awful but Labour really was dire. I wonder if they knew a recession was coming and clung to Corbyn and Abbot as a sure fire way to not get elected and not have to deal with this mess. It takes a while to gain trust back and Conservatives have lost it so if Stammer keeps his nose clean willing to bet they will be in next time round

Tillsforthrills · 24/09/2022 20:40

Not only ignore but they penalise the poor and vilify them, how dare they be poor they deserve to be treated like sub-humans. At least Labour and other parties don’t do that.

Poor people that are enterprising or make it through for their talent will be given a patronising pat on the head from Tories.

happy66 · 24/09/2022 20:42

Are you “poor”? Then you would know. If you live on a council estate and work long hours you get pissed off seeing people around you not working on various benefits and having more money than you. The benefits that people got/ would get under labour would be greater be than under conservative.

Also a lot of “poor” people get pissed off with woke/ political correctness associated with labour.

Immigration

I've never voted Tory. I've worked hard, done well and been rewarded. Wish I had a govt in power though who would tax me more to make life better for everyone. As I'm not a complete dick.

There’s nothing to stop you paying more tax if you wish to.

I am not poor if that was directed at me. A lot of people that don’t like conservatives aren’t poor at all. Shocker, I know.
