Social connotations of a blond bob

SocialConnotations · 24/09/2022 17:37

Help me find a grip.

For most of my life, I've had short (bobbed) blond hair. Always liked it. It suits me. Then lockdown happened, and it grew out. Kept it long because couldn't be arsed. Now want to go back to my old bob, but somehow the last few years have convinced me that there are certain social connotations to blond bobs... even in the Big Little Lies book (the Lianne Moriarty novel), there's a genre of person called "the blond bobs" (pushy middle class mums). My kids call a blond bob the "Karen cut".

In general, I don't give a f* what other people think of my appearance really. I'm in my late 40s and am generally over people-pleasing. But somehow it feels political to have a blond bob.

Tell me I'm ridiculous.

FFS OP, haven't you anything better to worry/think about?

There’s no need to get that nasty and personal over a haircut.

Grumpyarchitect · 24/09/2022 20:37

Sorry, my bad.

Just the ridiculousness of the whole thing really blew me away. 🤣

Blonde bob actually sounds bright and practical!

Mine is black, curly and a nightmare so perhaps I'm just jealous!!

@Grumpyarchitect ypu are both rude and wrong. Appearance is subject to judgement - it's human nature to make instant assessments of other people, which we then refine as more information becomes available.
Haircuts are included in this - rightly or wrongly, we make judgements about skinheads and kids who have a 'meet me at McDonald's' cut, hair dye, mullets, all sorts really.
Calling someone a pleb for asking a perfectly reasonable question is just cunty.

Grumpyarchitect · 24/09/2022 20:40

But calling someone cunty isn't cunty?

JamSandle · 24/09/2022 20:41

Don't give a damn. If you like your hair, keep it. Silly stereotypes are just that.

notacooldad · 24/09/2022 20:43

What a load of nonsense.
You need to get a handle on your kids.

As a side our director has a blonde bob, several of my young colleagues ( aged 20-30) have a blonde bob as well and maybe next week I will have one too depending on what my hairdresser decides!
Google 'celebrities with blonde bob hair' and you will find there are plenty of them with variations of the bob and look great. You don't have to look like someone that has given up on life!

Political my arse!
Do blokes in their 40's ever fret about their hairstyles and wonder if they are 'political'?

I’m gonna look for some threads on Karen’s now cos idk why it’s a misogynistic slur, I feel like the only people offended by it are, well, Karen’s?

Wow nobody has said that before EVER. Such a clever and cool post <yawns>

CambsAlways · 24/09/2022 20:53

This Karen name calling is pathetic, you should have a word with your kids! I have a choppy Bob love it and I’m in my sixties, there are some great bobs out there, mines not blonde, so yeh I think you are being ridiculous, do what you want to do

CathyTre · 24/09/2022 20:59

I had a blonde Bob in 1995 when I was sixteen. I have very long hair in my forties now! It’s still blonde, but it grows out of my head that way. I do sometimes wonder if I look like a witch these days.

J0y · 24/09/2022 18:52

Maybe update it. This picture isn't blonde but put in a few layers

Whoever did that haircut should be up in front of a tribunal in The Hague.

envira · 24/09/2022 21:16

Tillsforthrills · 24/09/2022 20:09

Young teens use it without thinking of what it really means. Just another slur on women who dare to age or speak up.

But women using it on here? Indefensible.

👏🏻👏🏻

I've had a dyed blonde bob for years until lockdown.
Then I had a grey bob.
In March this year I started Chemo/Radiotherapy and Brachytherapy so lost my hair.
Get the hairstyle you want @SocialConnotations and be grateful you have hair.

My best wishes to you. Flowers

I agree completely with your sentiment expressed

I had significant unwanted hair loss earlier this year, it has, at the moment become nearly long enough to be a blonde bob.

It's heartbreaking because it's not "my" hair, and now I find it comes with a side order of prejudice. Great.

Why don't you endeavour to be less of a prick to the OP?

shipwreckedonhighseas · 24/09/2022 22:51

You're being ridiculous. No one actually cares enough about it for this to be a thing. Your kids are winding you up. It's not very nice of them.

MarmiteCoriander · 24/09/2022 22:56

I've never know a blonde bob to be a Karen thing!

I certainly notice when people have blonde hair and either dark roots or dark eyebrows and it just looks very false IMO. I would never think- of they are a Karen though!

Almost every meme here has a woman with a blonde bob in it.

ITCrowds · 24/09/2022 23:06

My DC say I’m being a Karen at times. It’s a joke.

The first I heard of it was when we were on holiday and I asked to see the hotel manager (I wasn’t getting anywhere with reception staff and it was a legitimate issue!).

Whilst waiting I noticed that my DC were no longer standing behind me. They had hidden behind some plants.

They explained that they had hidden due to embarrassment as “That is what a Karen says”, with reference to my request to see the manager. They showed me some TikTok clips so I could catch up. The DC weren’t entirely serious though and some of the clips are funny - I got the gist of what a Karen is supposed to be, and I didn’t read it as “a woman who sticks up for herself” - they seem like a parody of an entitled white woman who speaks to service staff like dirt.

Recently my DD said to me that I “went full Karen” when asked to speak to a manager somewhere else (this is not something I do a lot, although it sounds like it here!). I wasn’t offended 😂 should I have been?

Also blonde and avoiding a bob. Just to be on the safe side.

MothsAndWaspsAreUsefulPollinators · 24/09/2022 23:20

Most of the haircuts are pobs rather than a bob.

Mercedesbenz2022 · 24/09/2022 23:32

@ImAvingOops ohhh what is this ??
‘kids who have a 'meet me at McDonald's' cut,’

the mind boggles

Yes, a misogynistic one.

pantsville · 25/09/2022 01:47

KiraKiraHikaru · 24/09/2022 20:18

karen cut is an inverted bob with those big blonde highlights. I remember the inverted bob being called a “pob” as it was made popular by posh spice.

I still call it a pob in my head!

vanHalen · 25/09/2022 02:14

scrufffy · 24/09/2022 17:42

I would be telling my kids not to use such a sexist misogynistic insult.

this with bells on!

Go and get your blonde bob back!

Penguinsaregreat · 25/09/2022 07:28

Thinking about it both my last 2 top bosses had blonde bobs.
As long as you don’t look like Borris Johnson you’ll be fine.
