Social connotations of a blond bob

Help me find a grip.

For most of my life, I've had short (bobbed) blond hair. Always liked it. It suits me. Then lockdown happened, and it grew out. Kept it long because couldn't be arsed. Now want to go back to my old bob, but somehow the last few years have convinced me that there are certain social connotations to blond bobs... even in the Big Little Lies book (the Lianne Moriarty novel), there's a genre of person called "the blond bobs" (pushy middle class mums). My kids call a blond bob the "Karen cut".

In general, I don't give a f* what other people think of my appearance really. I'm in my late 40s and am generally over people-pleasing. But somehow it feels political to have a blond bob.

Tell me I'm ridiculous.

Get a French Bob it is less kareny

lannistunut · 24/09/2022 19:10

OMG why are so many women using the insult Karen? Misogynistic shit.

DramaAlpaca · 24/09/2022 19:23

'Political'? About a blonde bob? FFS, I've heard it all now.

'Karen' is a nasty, misogynistic insult used to slap down middle aged women with opinions. As a middle aged woman who isn't afraid to have an opinion or fight my corner, I don't tolerate it from anyone in real life. It's awful hearing women using it about other women on here.

Oh, and I have my hair in a blonde bob - because I like it and it suits my hair type. Political it isn't.

I would be telling my kids not to use such a sexist misogynistic insult.

Exactly! So rude.

WeAreTheHeroes · 24/09/2022 19:39

Jeez - what hope is there if other women are using these terms? I had my hair cut today. The client before me had a fabulous precision cut bob with fringe. She looked amazing. If you like, go for it. It's a classic haircut for a reason.

UnagiForLife · 24/09/2022 19:40

You’re ridiculous.

onlythreenow · 24/09/2022 19:47

Have your hair cut the way you want it and stop overthinking it. I would be more concerned about the way your children speak if I were you!

primeoflife · 24/09/2022 19:47

I've had a hair cut and been turned into Liz Truss. I'm just telling myself it will grow 😭

PlacematsandCoasters · 24/09/2022 19:50

I’m 50s, told I’m stylish, when my hair is longer it just doesn’t suit me but give me a just below chin length bob and I feel so much happier. I have blonde highlights put in because I’m not keen on embracing my emerging greys. I couldn’t give a flying fuck what other people think and anyone that used the term ‘Karen’ in my vicinity would get a lecture about why it’s a bloody awful term!

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 24/09/2022 19:54

Isn’t the ‘Karen’ Bob cut up at the back and longer at the front? It’s not a box Bob or a French Bob, which is how l always think of them.

Mine’s silver with centre parting. I don’t give a shit what anyone else thinks. I love it

catzrulz · 24/09/2022 19:54

I've had a dyed blonde bob for years until lockdown.
Then I had a grey bob.
In March this year I started Chemo/Radiotherapy and Brachytherapy so lost my hair.
Get the hairstyle you want @SocialConnotations and be grateful you have hair.

Softplayhooray · 24/09/2022 19:57

OP do you use social media because where else are these totally weird ideas coming from? I don't use it, so have never heard of a blond Bob being political, or a Karen cut, or God knows what else. Just cut your hair how you want.

Have your hair how you want, but your kids? Rude.

I’m gonna look for some threads on Karen’s now cos idk why it’s a misogynistic slur, I feel like the only people offended by it are, well, Karen’s?

I'm more offended by misuse of apostrophes

envira · 24/09/2022 20:08

It's ridiculous. On here I've heard

A short bob after 30 - "K" or frumpy. Yet waist length hair is spinster-like, as I was told. Balayage and straightening are both dated apparently.

Tillsforthrills · 24/09/2022 20:09

Young teens use it without thinking of what it really means. Just another slur on women who dare to age or speak up.

But women using it on here? Indefensible.

Nat6999 · 24/09/2022 20:10

The Karen cut is a very stacked bob, if you have it cut without the stacked back it isn't a Karen cut. I'm following a lady on Instagram & she has the most amazing bob cut I have ever seen, I'm thinking of having mine done when I can find a good mobile hairdresser I can trust.

Croque · 24/09/2022 20:15

My vision of a Karen would never have something so regulated as a sleek bob. However, I have noticed that most successful, white, middle class women married to the male equivalent of that do seem to have an extended blonde bob phase which may last a lifetime.

KiraKiraHikaru · 24/09/2022 20:18

karen cut is an inverted bob with those big blonde highlights. I remember the inverted bob being called a “pob” as it was made popular by posh spice.
