Have you ever met anyone that won the jackpot on the lottery?

My friend told me that she thinks the lottery is a huge conspiracy theory and nobody wins the jackpot for real. At the time I thought she was nuts but I do keep thinking about it when I walk the dog. So please help me stop thinking this nonesense and tell me, have you ever met anyone that has actually won the jackpot?

When I worked as a local newspaper reporter, I interviewed a bloke who’d won £2 million - quite a nice amount I thought. He bought a nice new house (I saw it) and paid off his kids’ mortgages, otherwise he was just getting on with running his cleaning business as usual. This was about ten years ago.

I know a syndicate that won in the first year. They worked in a chemist. They all finished work and the pharmacist bought the business.

I tend to think phone-in competitions are 'won' by friends of friends of those who produce the shows.

I don't know anyone who has won a lot of money on the lottery, but I don't think that's odd.

Before I retired, I had a plan. On winning the lottery, I'd rock up to work on the Monday, sit at my desk drinking vodka-based cocktails, feet up on desk and wait for someone to escort me from the building. Of course, there would have been some character-giving comments about certain managers etc. before it reached the stage of being escorted off - stage right .... 😉

Yes. Lovely man who still works as a postie for Royal Mail. Gave most away to family and bought an allotment . Is one of the nicest people around. Still drinks in the same pubs and hangs out with friends. He deserved it. Think he won about 3 million.

My BILS grandparents won 3.2 million.
My best friends parents won around £750,000 in 2002 ish.
A man from DHs football team won the euro millions; around £33 million.

Please can we be friends??

SylvanianFrenemies · 24/09/2022 16:31

My colleague's mother in law won.
She bought a caravan and a holiday, and gave all her kids and grandkids £10,000. She thought that was it used up! It took her a while to realise how much life had changed.

A work colleagues mum won 1 million on a scratchcard on xmas eve about 14 years ago!

Bearsan · 24/09/2022 17:04

My friend at work's brother won big, didn't say how much but they gave away over £80k to family (inc my friend)
DH met through work someone who had won the jackpot, his share was almost a million. He'd gone back to work 10 years later because he'd spent the lot but still had a big house to maintain.

I personally know someone who won a big prize on the premium bonds- not the jackpot though.

WhichSideOfTheMoon · 24/09/2022 17:16

Yes - my other half does gardening for a chap who won a huge amount (£50 million or so) on the Euromillions! Didn’t change him much, he just bought a big-ish house but still drives around in quite an old car. Very nice and down to earth chap, apparently.

My cousin does lots of competitions in magazines and things. She’s won loads of stuff…..holidays, kitchen appliances, cash, etc.

ivykaty44 · 24/09/2022 17:20

People next door but one to my dad won on the lottery in a syndicate. They received £400k

this would be approximately 15 years ago.

swimmingincustard · 24/09/2022 17:23

Postcode lottery, not in the millions though. 150 thousand or so; does that count?

Deadringer · 24/09/2022 18:00

I knew someone years ago who won twice. Top prize of about 1.5 million the first time and about 50k the second time. He was a a top consultant so not short of a quid anyway, i believe he used to spend about 100 pounds on tickets every week.

cinnabongene · 24/09/2022 18:01

Yes. Euromillions £32 million

Deadringer · 24/09/2022 18:03

Also a friend of dhs won 100k in a free draw when he was buying a household applicance years ago, in Harvey Norman iirc.

x2boys · 24/09/2022 18:07

My friends, brothers ,ex wife [ tenuous link) won about 7 million on the lottery I think .

Longdistance · 24/09/2022 18:12

If I’d win millions. I Wouldn’t go public at all.

As for radio phone ins, my db won a few years ago through Radio X. He’s always entering competitions. He won an iPad, Sonos speakers, vouchers, tickets to gigs and the theatre. I’m sure it was a grands worth of stuff. He saved the recording for us all us to listen to. The other contestant was lousy 😂

shieldmaiden7 · 24/09/2022 18:18

Yes, few years ago now. They paid of their siblings mortgages, opened up savings accounts for all their nieces and nephews and left a healthy amount for them to retire on.

Bookaholic73 · 24/09/2022 18:21

Anyone else just bought a ticket for tonight? 😂

FunkyPhantom · 24/09/2022 18:29

Yes, an old buddy from my teens was part of a six person syndicate that won 3.2 million
I only know as it was in the local paper 👍

Rosio · 24/09/2022 18:45

I knew an ex colleague who won a brand new car in a competition. Another colleague won £250k on a scratch card

imsureineverdo · 24/09/2022 19:03

Yes £10 million, I went on holiday with him.

CriticalAlert · 04/06/2023 15:59

A work colleague won 1.2 million in 1998. She was already quite well off and spent about 50 a week on the lottery. She actually stayed at work..... very very boring......

TheFormidableMrsC · 04/06/2023 16:23

Yes somebody in my extended family won a few years back.

Peverellshire · 04/06/2023 16:31

I know of a few that one in the earliest days. One guy who ran a large syndicate I knew of, claimed he had a strategy. They won the jackpot & got 5 numbers a couple of times. Easier to win with 40 odd numbers or so & often 8 would win jackpot. Then they made it tougher.

Peverellshire · 04/06/2023 16:32

’Won’ not one.
