I think I may have made a mistake that there's no way on earth I can admit to

Except maybe here.

DS has his first serious girlfriend. She's lovely, they seem very happy, she stays here about twice a week.

As a result his room is immaculate for the first time in nearly a decade, but has also seen the introduction of air fresheners.

I hate air fresheners with a vengeance. I dislike the cloying smell and I am convinced they give me a headache and sore eyes. I have told DS they need to go, if your room smells, clean it and open a window. He swears they have all been removed, but I can still smell them in his room and the "den" they use, especially when she's here.

I think I've just realised it's not airfreshener, but her perfume.....

Try putting a (blue) Neutradol Gel discreetly in his room... has no smell itself but absorbs other smells... should disperse the lingering 'fragrance'!!

I really hate this awful fashion for air fresheners and fabric conditioners.

I can smell air fresheners in the air where I live because so many people use them; I assume they're coming through the air vents of the houses.

My daughter's house stinks of fabric conditioner. I can smell it on whatever I'm wearing for the rest of the day when I've just been to her house and my coat will smell of it for days.

But back to the perfume. Yes, of course you can say something, it's you house she's stinking out, for god's sake.

Tell her, as tactfully as possible, that you're very sensitive to certain perfumes and ask her not wear it in the house. Tell her it triggers your hayfever.

Vapeyvapevape · 24/09/2022 15:37

Does she wear Chanel No 5 ? That stuff reeks !

I used to feel ill when I came into contact with people wearing Poison or Loulou back in the day so I feel for you.

However I definitely wouldn't say anything to his girlfriend. Maybe buy her a different one for Christmas?

Uggh LouLou, that was the one I dreaded. I love scent but LouLou made me feel really nauseous. Poison not great either but not as bad.

The mrs Hinch brigade

Are you assuming I'm one of the 'Mrs Hinch brigade'?

You couldn't be more wrong.

It's not Youth Dew is it? That stuff is the pits and makes me think of Parisienne Brothels.

This made me laugh out loud - my very proper grandmother used to wear Youth Dew.

Another one for “
Poison” Ghastly sickly sweet scent like penny sweets that made me feel headachey and sick.
Reed diffusers have the same effect-
Smell so strong you can taste it.
Ironically church incense I love- The sort that emanates from a thurible- but any other sort of room scent is unendurable.
Plug ins - Urgh.

lindyloo57 · 24/09/2022 16:28

I love poison, lou lou, and youth dew😄

crochetmonkey74 · 24/09/2022 16:34

I think you can mention that strong scents give you a headache and ask her to not spray at your house but as someone the opposite to you, I love perfume and I wouldn't stop wearing it or change my perfume. It's one of my favourite things when you fall in love with someone and love the way they smell. It would really upset my life to lose it. Lots of my friends have signature perfumes and it's so comforting

FuzzyPuffling · 24/09/2022 17:02

My neighbours (we are in detached properties, so some distance away) hang their washing in the garden (no problem with that) but it makes my garden stink of fabric conditioner. Horrible!

God, I remember first pregnancy, like I picked up super doggy smelling powers. My MiL's perfume made me gag! And the memory still lingers , hate it.

This is me. 22 years later and still hate most
Perfumes.

Scianel · 24/09/2022 17:05

My people! I get bad headaches from perfumes, air fresheners etc. All my washing stuff is zero fragrance. Also for some reason if I pass someone in eg the supermarket wearing heavy perfume it'll linger in my hair?!

I mostly solve the issue by being very anti-social.

Ponderingwindow · 24/09/2022 17:10

i have a documented allergy, so anyone entering my home gets told not to wear perfume. It’s the one place I don’t need to worry about strong antihistamines and epipens.

If it’s making you feel unwell, you are just going to have to say something.

123ZYX · 24/09/2022 17:10

@pigsDOfly
I think the suggestion was that those with the heavily scented house that you mentioned in your post are the Mrs Hinch brigade. Mrs Hinch has a think of making everything smell of heavily scented cleaning products

Mummyoflittledragon · 24/09/2022 17:14

Someone mentioned the super powered smell when pregnant. I acquired it too. Mine never left. I am with you op. My dd sprays all manner of body spray in her bedroom. It reeks of all the different smells. Luckily she doesn’t stink. I don’t like strong floral smells and agree Poison is too much. I also hate vanilla with a passion. Dd loves it.

Underanothersky · 24/09/2022 17:20

I have sensory processing issues. I have no problem asking people not use strong scents in my house.

Ah, ok thanks.

I did wonder if I'd misunderstood after I'd posted it tbh.

My mistake.

Tulipomania · 24/09/2022 17:29

Are you sure they haven't been vaping in his room.

Some vape flavours can be very sickly sweet & cloying.

TheLongGallery · 24/09/2022 17:32

@TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination I am the same I bought some charcoal based nose plugs that are supposed to neutralise smells. I take them in planes or anywhere I can’t change seats such as the theatre. Do they work? haven’t had to use them yet, my bloodhound nose started during menopause. I was so thankful on my last two long haul flights no one was wearing a strong scent.

Bpdqueen · 24/09/2022 17:33

Buy her a perfume you like for Christmas if their still together

Baxdream · 24/09/2022 17:36

This is exactly what my DD room smells, cheap nasty perfume . I've even bought her nice perfume but she buys body sprays!
If you find a solution let me know 😂

swimlyn · 24/09/2022 17:42

I thought it was long established that the chemicals in air fresheners and candles were bad for humans. I guess perfumes may have similar issues?

Some people have homes crammed full of the fumes, to be “clean”. Why they’re called fresheners I’ll never understand.

We have none of this anywhere, and surprise, surprise our house is not smelly at all. It’s useful to have a house free of artificial smells, as then you’ll notice a real problem immediately, for example drains or pets etc.

SmudgeButt · 24/09/2022 17:58

Buy her something you like?

UniversalAunt · 24/09/2022 20:20

‘I don't think I can say "you know I've been complaining about that awful airfreshener? I think it's your perfume" 😆’

Yes, you can.

’Son, she’s a lovely girl, I am so pleased that you are happy with her. She’s welcome to come over, and as it is her perfume that is making me nauseous, please ask her not to use it before she comes over.’
