NHS payrise

I wonder if anyone would be able to answer a question about the NHS ‘payrise’. I got my payslip today and will get my backpay on Tuesday with a small amount deducted for pension arrears. Firstly, the arrears amount was smaller than I was expecting and secondly I’m still on the 9.3% pension whereas I thought I was going up to 9.8%. Has anyone else had this re the pension particularly? I’m wondering if the % amount will go up next month if we’re paid in arrears.

Pension changes don't come in until October.

ClottedCreamAndStrawberries · 23/09/2022 11:38

That’s what I thought, thanks. I just didn’t want to spend it and end up having to repay money.

I'm waiting desperately for my pay slip so I can get myself some treats with the arrears, was it a lot less than you were expecting? I can't for the life of me work out how much it's going to be.

I wouldn’t be rushing to treat yourself. My payrise net amount was so small I laughed out loud 🤣

I got a letter from NHS Pensions today. I've read the first sentence but I can't face the rest of the 4 pages before I've had 27 coffees.

Luckymummytoone · 23/09/2022 11:48

I hope I get mine this month! 🤞🏼

Same 😂 although am on mat leave so that probably contributed. Although I have given up trying to work out anything to do with NHS payroll, there's barely any logic

@ClottedCreamAndStrawberries

Did you notice the difference in your wage? I'm not holding out a lot of hope as I bet it is way less than it sounds!

JellyJaba · 23/09/2022 11:53

@bookish83 if you know what your new salary is going to be you can check what you'll get using the online salary calculator

I’m too band 5. I was deducted about £50 for pension but got about £530 backpay. My overall pay was £2174 meaning I was better off this month by about £300 given that I was taxed like mad. It’s nothing to get too excited about 😢

*top band 5

I'm top of band 4 and also got about £300 extra. We've been joking in work today that we'd like this amount every month......

ditavonteesed · 23/09/2022 12:02

I'm top of band 5 but only do 30 hours. So maybe I'll escape a bit from the tax. In theory you should get some of the tax back next month.

ClottedCreamAndStrawberries · 23/09/2022 12:24

I paid just short of £1k in tax, NI and pension this month! Plus £148 of student loan on top of that. I almost fainted 😆

@JellyJaba

Thanks, I know which you mean Smile i just sometimes feel its less than you think! Will wait til next week and hope pension arrears not too bad x

vdbfamily · 24/09/2022 07:08

I am NHS 8a on bottom of scale and got £200 less than my normal pay this month. I thought it is to do with 6 months of increased pension contributions but someone on thread said that starts in October so now confused.

That doesn't sound right. I'll see what I get when payslips come out. I'm mid-band 7 but mine will be confusing as I have also moved up a point on the scale last month which will show in this month's pay.

Thinkle · 24/09/2022 07:26

@vdbfamily they sent some comms out in this at my work, certain bands inc 8a I think move up the existing pension rates (I.e. pay a higher %) and that increased contribution more than offsets the pay rise so your take home pay decreases. I don’t know what the changes to 8a pension contributions are in October, but that will change your pay again and then there will be the reversal of the NI increase from November. Anyone know when income tax drops down to 19%? That’ll be another change.

SwayingInTime · 24/09/2022 07:32

That happened to me and several colleagues when we got the 3% the same month as back dated adjusted absence payments last year (two years ago?). Entire pay rise and more taken in additional pension contributions.

UseOfWeapons · 24/09/2022 07:32

Won’t know for sure until I get my payslip on Tuesday, but my understanding was we get the back pay this month, and NI contributions change next month.
The letter from the NHS said my NI would go up by£16.67 per month but as tax will go down, I’d be £760 per year better off tax-wise.
Or something.

Time to strike.

Yes the payrise pushes the lower tier of 8a into the 12% pension bracket so they now owe money and get an actual paycut in take home pay.

You actually earn more (actual take home pay) as a top B7 than 8a ......... go figure. What an incentive for progressing your career

cushioncovers · 24/09/2022 07:58

I'm top of band 3 work full time 8-4pm and my take home back pay was just over £400. Nice but nothing to get excited about.

Motnight · 24/09/2022 08:13

I think that the band 8 drop in pay is only for a month. But a terrible thing anyway.

not nice, that’s accumulated from April. Monthly going forward it’ll be a pittance.

I’m top of B8a and got less than you.
