Should I get the Mirena Coil in this situation?

I'm 47. I'm having two cervical polyps removed soon. Periods are still quite normal... I just find I can fly off the handle at times! He has suggested, because of my age, he could also insert the Mirena Coil when he's removing the polyps. I don't know whether to go for it or not so would be grateful for any opinions. Is it a form of HRT?

Hopeful bump!

I had a Mirena fitted as part of HRT. It provides the progesterone element you need if you have a uterus (to help reduce the risk of uterine cancer). Then I use oestrogen gel.

YumYummy · 23/09/2022 16:47

I had a Mirena for the same reason and a couple of years added Ostrogel, it’s worked really well for me.

I had mine at 47 and another one at 51.

KangarooKenny · 23/09/2022 16:51

Yep, get it done while you are there. It’s the progesterone part of HRT if you decide to go on it. I had it due to heavier and more frequent periods in peri, which caused anaemia.
I also found that it lessened my rages in PMT.

Evilpixie41 · 23/09/2022 16:56

I went into early peri-menopause in my late 30s. I had the Mirena to stop effects such as irregular bleeding and heavy blood loss. Has worked a treat.

ThinkingForEveryone · 23/09/2022 17:26

I had one, it caused awful BV. They don't like removing them before they are due to come out either so if you don't like it prepare to have a fight on your hands.

Positivefuture2 · 23/09/2022 19:34

@KangarooKenny Yep, get it done while you are there.

That's what the gynae suggested to me.

I had my Mirena out yesterday (medical reasons) and asked my GP to do a smear "while you're in there" it's a legitimate thing.

cosmosforall · 24/09/2022 07:09

I had one put in for my HRT regime and it was awful. Made everything much worse mood wise. some people are sensitive to the type of progesterone it supplies. I had to have it removed privately as the NHS rules are so restrictive.

BarrelOfOtters · 24/09/2022 07:25

I’m 54 and been peri for about 10 years. Gynae suggested I had one as was on femeston pills HRT and hated the progesterone days and also was having a heavy bleed every few weeks. She said a lower steadier dose of progesterone fron the Mirena with oestrogen gel and testosterone would be better.

it’s been 2 months and after an initial bad mood time (poor DH) and spotting I think it is all much better than oral hrt.

the insertion for me was awful, it caused me to fit and faint and I had to stay in for the afternoon, glad I was at hospital rather than gp surgery. Apparently that is very rare though…something to do with where my cervix is positioned….

so if I’d had it done while they were already in there I’d jump at the chance.

Something I've just thought of. I couldn't tolerate the pill, bled constantly and had to come off it. Am I likely to have the same issues with the coil?

Positivefuture2 · 05/11/2022 10:49

It's three weeks today since I had polyps removed and coil fitted. I had what I think was my normal period about 5 days later. Since then I've had bleeding or brown discharge every day, also cramps maybe 3 days a week. I know it's still early days and it's probably still settling, but would appreciate any positive stories as it's starting to get me down, also having to wear a pad every day.

Give it time, I added Ostrogel and the combination is really good.

ConfusedHur · 05/11/2022 12:13

Yes, I know I probably need to be patient!

RandomMess · 05/11/2022 12:18

I spotted daily for 6 months and still had light monthly bleeds on it.

GetOffTheRoof · 05/11/2022 12:21

It does slow down - I'm on month 10 of my new Mirena. The first month I bled quite a bit, heavy period month 2 with awful awful cramping for the next 3 periods to the point I was considering getting it out. Cramping died down from 5 onwards. No period in month 9 and a tiny brown period for 2 days in month 10 with minor cramping on 2 occasions.

I used to get through a super plus extra tampon every 2hrs for the best part of ten days without the coil. This thing makes a huge difference to me. Its my second one though (6yr gap with failed TTC), so I was hoping it would work well again and it's starting to go back to how I wanted it to be!

ConfusedHur · 16/11/2022 19:31

So I'm into week 5 now and week 5 of having to wear a pad every day and getting fed up of it now.... don't think I'll last with 6 months of this. Realistically, how long should I give it? I'm feeling down with the constant bleeding.

Abra1t · 16/11/2022 19:32

I had a mirena at 56 as part of my HRT and it’s been great.

Nottodaty · 16/11/2022 19:37

I had my first one inserted whilst I under GA during endo treatment. It did take around 6 months to properly settle. Easing each month and now no periods at all or issues.
I’ve had this one removed and a new one - this time not under GA - wowsers it hurt (I’m being polite) but this time no settling needed all good.

It changed my life, I know it doesn’t work for everyone. But do give it a little time :)

I was the same OP. It took 3 months for mine to settle but once it did, it was amazing at helping to reduce heavy periods. Its been in situ for 3 years now and I'm so glad I persevered with it.

The Mirena coil has no effect on the menopause, it is a contraceptive device.

Not true, it can act as both contraception (for up to 7 years) and as the progesterone element of HRT (for up to 5 years).

BruceIsACake · 16/11/2022 20:50

I had Mirena put in in Feb and have bled pretty much every day since. Usually not much but there nonetheless.

Are you going to persevere with it? Don't think I could cope that long!
