Should I get the Mirena Coil in this situation?

I'm 47. I'm having two cervical polyps removed soon. Periods are still quite normal... I just find I can fly off the handle at times! He has suggested, because of my age, he could also insert the Mirena Coil when he's removing the polyps. I don't know whether to go for it or not so would be grateful for any opinions. Is it a form of HRT?

I think getting it out will be a chore and I had it to stop heavy bleeding, which it has done. I'm giving it the full year then will reassess.

I'll try and persevere for another while

The bleeding/ discharge has eased off over the last 3 days. It's still there but barely there so fingers crossed.

I had the Mirena coil fitted this year at age 60, at the same time as polyps removal and uterine biopsy for hyperplasia. I bled for around 12 weeks, but it’s all settled fine now. For me it’s to prevent recurring hyperplasia/polyps. I’m 22 years post menopause as I had an early menopause.

That's good to hear.

I bled very lightly for around six months initially. But since then I’ve barely even had what could be described as a bleed, and I’m on my second one now. Given that I had it for really heavy periods it has been an absolute godsend.

I didn’t want the coil for various reasons so went on the mini pill instead as an alternative- so I am on the mini pill for part of my progesterone, oestrogel and I also take 100mg utrogestan every night as well as extra progesterone. Just putting it out there as another option if anyone else is like me and didn’t / doesn’t fancy the coil. (I’m 42 and went into early menopause aged 37 due to autoimmune issues).

I bled for months on the mini pill a few years ago, heavy all the time, so I stopped it. Coil seems to be settling a bit hopefully now after 5 weeks. I was worried I'd have an awful time for months like the pill.

I had mine fitted last December. I’d previously struggled with the pill and the implant (constant bleeding for months!) so I was very hesitant about trying the mirena coil.

I bled for 4 weeks at first. Quite heavy initially and then it gradually tailed off and stopped. I’ve had a period every month as usual since then. At the start, they were heavy and long but they’ve got shorter and lighter each month. My last ‘period’ was one day of spotting! I still ovulate too (or at least have the symptoms of ovulation) which is nice.

I’m very glad I got it fitted. I’m a teacher and I was struggling with finding the time to go the toilet when having a heavy period so this has been great to have them almost non existent!

I think different things work for different people. I’ve been on the mini pill for 8 years now and have no bleeding or periods whatsoever.

Wow, so my Mirena fell out today*! Last 2 periods were crazy heavy again, Dr fobbed me off about taking it out so I decided to pull it out myself but found it was already part way out. Could feel the plastic sticking a good cm out of my cervix so one gentle tug and it was out.

*Exaggeration.
