@dapsnotplimsolls apparently it's not a type of engineering, it's a module that engineering students study as a core course (or at least that's what DH told me and he studied engineering).
I don't see how it's one of the most influential Wiki pages though, the pages have been getting a bit obscure lately.
I want a nice normal guessable thing like cheese or jars or rain. I end up resorting to Wikipedia most days now and I shouldn't really have to.

I solved today's Redactle (#187) in 73 guesses with an accuracy of 65.75%. Played at www.redactle.com/

Had to Google for the first word after trying everything I could think of.

It is a whole career field in engineering though. Most engineering degrees are fairly broad brush and you get to specialise once you begin work or take a Masters (you can do an MSc in various control engineering fields - automotive, aerospace, transport, automated systems etc).

For instance, I did a broad brush first degree and then a specialist Masters that only appeared as a third year module in the civils undergrad degree.

I still think it's a bit weird that an apparently important and influential engineering aspect doesn't appear on the "list of engineering branches" on Wikipedia where there's an article on it.

OP posts:
ErrolTheDragon · 11/10/2022 10:36

It's not exactly a 'branch', it's something that's multidisciplinary and used within most or all of the various branches. The sort of thing that most of us just take for granted without thinking about (like a lot of engineering!). Obscured by its ubiquity, perhaps?

As I mentioned upthread, it's significant enough that there used to be a whole A level labelled 'systems and control'.

I still think it's a bit weird that an apparently important and influential engineering aspect doesn't appear on the "list of engineering branches" on Wikipedia where there's an article on it.

It’s listed as a major specialty of Electrical Engineering and several times as a major specialty within the Interdisciplinary section on the Wiki list of engineering branches. As does my own speciality, which is involved in all infrastructure projects.

InMySpareTime · 11/10/2022 11:16

I eventually found it in the drop down boxes on the page, but it was mostly off the edge of my phone screen. Perhaps it's more visible on a computer screen.

Looking back, Triathlon (#179) was the last "layperson" article (ie one that doesn't require specific knowledge or googling to figure out). They used to put a "layperson" article every few days, perhaps we're due a run of them.
I like uncovering the words and being able to work out the title from general knowledge, but it's not been possible for a week now. It makes the game less enjoyable.

TheHideAndSeekingHill · 11/10/2022 11:52

I agree @InMySpareTime

I've got loads of specialist knowledge too and I can tell you now NOTHING has ever come up in my area 😂Either maths/physics/engineering people have been writing a disproportionate number of articles (likely) or there's a preference by the redactle team.

Dreikanter · 11/10/2022 12:16

I solved today's Redactle (#187) in 7 guesses with an accuracy of 57.14%. Played at www.redactle.com/

ErrolTheDragon · 11/10/2022 12:41

The info says it's a random selection, if you look at the proportions of articles in each category, over the long term I think it's true though still bio/medicinal topics have been underrepresented. Randomness is 'lumpy'.

There's been a little run of 'technical' terms in the last few days but looking back over a bit longer I'd have said many were general knowledge or able to be arrived at logically - I wouldn't have got them otherwise.

BIWI · 11/10/2022 15:44

Thank you Google!

I solved today's Redactle (#187) in 59 guesses with an accuracy of 50.85%. Played at www.redactle.com/

Got the second word but then realised I'd have to Google for the first word as I have no clue/knowledge about the specific subject.

I agree it's time for articles that are more general.

InMySpareTime · 11/10/2022 17:23

Lots of guesses but no Google. This one is something a layman will have heard of.

I solved today's Redactle (#188) in 190 guesses with an accuracy of 47.89%. Played at www.redactle.com/

@ErrolTheDragon You have just reminded me that I did a very boring module called "Systems and Control" in my first year at university a very long time ago!

102 without google.
