Experiences of Vinted

I'm in the process of having a good old wardrobe declutter and have dug out a few decent unworn items (most with tags on). I was thinking of selling them to make a little bit of cash back. I wondered if anyone had any experience of using Vinted and could give me any pointers/words of caution to help me out as a complete newbie. I'm not expecting to make a fortune, just enough to cover postage and possibly a few quid extra. TIA

I've bought and sold lots and I use it over eBay every time now.

As a seller, you only receive the funds once the buyer has confirmed receipt of their parcel and they're happy with it. I've never had any problems with this, people are quick to confirm.

MissBattleaxe · 22/09/2022 12:30

Personally I found Vinted prices so low that I make a lot more on eBay, even after they take a fee.

Skyeheather · 22/09/2022 12:33

All of my items have 100's of likes but nobody is actually buying them!

I tend to list on Vinted and FB Marketplace and sell to the first interested party. I do quite well selling on FB.

tectonicplates · 22/09/2022 12:45

Following with interest. I joined Vinted a few weeks ago and nothing has sold yet, but I've had way more views and likes than Ebay recently. I used to sell 2-4 items per month on Ebay but they changed something earlier this year and now I've only sold three items in a year, which is the worst record ever. Ebay is basically dead and your listings become invisible unless you pay to promote stuff.

All my Ebay items with one or no watchers, I took the listings down and put them on Vinted instead. I still have some listings left on Ebay with numerous watchers but it seems pointless - people tend to watch stuff and then forget about it, so it doesn't really translate into sales. So I'm wondering if I should also add those items to Vinted too, but then it'd be sod's law that I'd sell the same item on both sites at the same time and then I'd be in trouble. What to do?

SpinningFloppa · 22/09/2022 12:47

People like them hoping you will drop the price. I know that’s what I do anyway

NorthFaceofthelaundrypile · 22/09/2022 12:54

Detailed descriptions and well presented clothes…
The number of things that look like they’ve spent years screwed up in a ball is astonishing!
keep your buyer informed every step of the way, helps get positive reviews.

tectonicplates · 22/09/2022 12:55

What's the secret to achieving your first sale on Vinted?

I reduced a load of prices on Ebay the other week and still nobody's buying. I've never seen Ebay this bad ever, they just hide your listings.

sparklecement · 22/09/2022 12:59

I prefer Vinted over eBay.

I put items on at slightly more than I would like. Hopefully someone makes me an offer I can then either accept or decline. Or when people have favourited an item and I get a notification, I just send them a quick message to say I am open to reasonable offers if they like the skirt, top, bag whatever.

if a few weeks have passed and items are sticking, I’ll reduce the price myself.

ExplodingCarrots · 22/09/2022 13:09

I've bought and sold quite a lot on vinted recently . Overall it's been a positive experience. Make sure you pick the right postage options for you . Buyers tend to buy the postage label ..making it easier for you. You just print the label and drop off . Be aware of Royal Mail though . A buyer bought the small parcel option for £2.25 as that's what vinted said it was. I then had to buy the label but the cheapest small parcel option on Royal Mail website was £2.75 . So I lost money on postage . So that's why I've only got Evri and yodel enabled now .

People are used to buying things for a low price on vinted so don't be surprised if you get loads of people haggling on your price. I've had loads of branded dresses up with tags for £3 -4 and I'll get people offering £1.50. Unless I'm desperate to get rid I reject because they're getting a bargain anyway.
Vinted encourage you to message people who have favourited your item and offer a price ...but I don't like that .

I've made £50 in the past month from selling .

LiftyLift · 22/09/2022 13:15

I’ve sold loads on Vinted recently. It’s better a seller to eBay I feel, as the buyer buys a postage label for you (except Royal Mail) and they pay the fee. You do have to price very low though. I’m selling things for a couple of quid each. Branded things sell best I find as people want premium things at low prices.

I think there must be an algorithm at play in terms and of how your items are listed. I’m selling and I’m active on there nearly every day which must bump me up.

tectonicplates · 22/09/2022 13:22

@LiftyLift What exactly counts as being "active"? I don't want to have to constantly bump up my stuff - does stuff like refreshing the page work?

Littlebird43 · 22/09/2022 13:22

I love Vinted - I set myself a challenge to dress me and my children in 2nd hand clothes this year and have done it all from Vinted. We are better dressed than ever before because I can buy really good quality and designer items for a few £. I don't think I will ever buy anything new again!
To sell things need to be in great condition, fashionable and in the right season (no one is buying shorts and summer dresses now) and keenly priced.

tectonicplates · 22/09/2022 13:27

Not you, but I reckon a lot of those keenly-priced clothes get sold on for twice the price on Depop. On Ebay I sell at a fair price because I want the item to actually be worn by the buyer. I can't stand resellers and I'm here to make money for myself, not to help other people make a profit out of me.

This is purely my suspicion, but I’m on the app daily, messaging buyers to say when I’ve posted things etc. I haven’t paid to bump anything. I also but something probably weekly too.

But once you’ve sold it on, it’s no longer yours so surely it doesn’t matter what they do with it? There’s nothing stopping you selling for more on other platforms if you prefer.

User38899953 · 22/09/2022 13:29

I've sold loads on Vinted. Most people buy bundles, I offer 10% off for bundles.

Postage costs are so high at the moment, and as consumers we are used to free postage- so offering bundles usually makes people not too concerned about the cost to post.

You have to list things reasonably priced though.

lilroo87 · 22/09/2022 13:33

I've sold quite a lot on Vinted but I don't have anything priced at ridiculously high prices.
Some items haven't sold but have lots of favourites but are already priced pretty low so I won't reduce them but would probably accept a decent offer.
I put items I definitely want more money for on FB marketplace though as you tend to get better offers that way

tectonicplates · 22/09/2022 13:40

There's always people who say that! It matters to me what they do with it because it just does, it makes me feel uncomfortable and at the end of the day I don't owe anyone an explanation, and resellers aren't entitled to one. It doesn't make financial sense to me to sell something for £10 if someone's going to resell it for £20 - why can't I just sell it for £20 myself in the first place?

Anyway, 99% of the time I price my items at a price that's a fair price for me and also a bargain for the seller, but not so much of a bargain-basement bargain that it could be sold on at a profit. I research past sale prices and I know what my stuff is worth.

But I once made a mistake with a specific item that I priced too low on Ebay, and I was suddenly BOMBARDED with messages asking if I had any more for sale, if I could reduce the price even more etc. It was creepy, and I felt so hounded that I took the listing down.

Neilsfavouritechilli · 22/09/2022 14:11

Thanks everyone, I might give it a go with a couple of items and see how I get on before I make the effort to list everything.

Vinted is great for low cost but fast selling, and eBay buy it now is the longer game for more money.

definitely increase your Vinted prices by a couple of £££ and send offers

MikeWozniaksMoustache · 22/09/2022 14:24

I definitely don’t find Vinted fast selling. I’ve got loads of decent kids clothes on there, all priced as low as possible (£1) and have discount on bundles, 5 star rating etc but nothing is selling atm. Desperate for the money too as I need to buy winter clothes for my little one 😔

tectonicplates · 22/09/2022 14:55

On Vinted, does anyone here think it's worth paying £6.95 to spotlight your wardrobe? Or does that not really work?

XelaM · 22/09/2022 15:05

I bought my daughter Kickers on Vinted as school shoes. It was an absolute bargain at £20, arrived super quickly and they were in excellent nearly-new condition. Very happy and would definitely use it again!

xsquared · 22/09/2022 15:44

Hi OP,

You certainly won't be making a fortune from Vinted as I personally find that potential buyers want something at rock bottom prices, even when you have already priced them very low. I would put the asking price higher than what you want it for so that people can negotiate a price that would seem reasonable to them.

Some of the items that have sold within seconds of listing, were stuff I wore in the 90s and in good condition still.

I would strongly advise turning off the InPost locker option as lots of people seem to have had problems with it. In my case, my buyer never received a code to unlock it so she had to phone InPost to provide a new one.

Jaffacats · 22/09/2022 15:48

I’ve used Vinted a few times in recent months and all went smoothly. However I’m currently having problems with InPost. One parcel has been stuck in their sorting office for 5 days and the other is now a day late. Avoid InPost and use a different carrier.
