Massive embarrassing moment at soft play

softplayfail · 21/09/2022 18:40

I work a very typical Monday to Thursday office job. Admin. You know. Usual. I had some annual leave so decided to book a day off. I have a 2 year old very energetic toddler. I joke she's like a labrador puppy. Needs walking and exercise in all weather's. Had the bright idea to go to soft play. We don't go often and it would burn off some energy. This idea would come round to bite me in the arse.

So off we plodded. Now I don't know about the soft play near you but ours is split into toddler and babies and then at the upper end is a bigger kids section. I got my tea and watched my little angel playing in the ball pit with some other toddlers. Feeling almost a Christmas card moment of 'this is one of those memories I'll look back one day'. If this was a film heart warming music would be playing. I turned to add my milk to my tea and in the 4.6 seconds my back was turned she'd sprinted up to the big kids section like a cat seeing a mouse. Didn't even know she could move that quick. But we live and learn.

I gave chase. It wasn't overly busy but I couldn't see her. Slightly cursing myself now for not dressing her all in yellow and maybe adding some chtlristmas lights round her neck for ease of finding. By the time I'd found her she was at the top of the soft play section. Just sitting there mockingly calling mama. Now she was about 4 centimeteres from the slide. The slide that leads to the bottom. So looking like a child abductor I tried to entice her down the slide. Offering her sweets at one point just cementing my slightly creepy vibes I'm giving off. Doesn't help she's a clone of her dad and the only similarity we share is she has the same dimple in her cheek but I doubt that would stand up in court if I was accused of abduction. She started to do that awful high pitched whiney cry toddlers excel at. I translated it as a combination of 'come and get me if you want me and 'that slide is way too tall and if you don't get me I'm stuck here forever'

So this is where my mistakes began. I decided to go find my way to the top. Now these were clearly designed for at most a tall 10 year old not a nearly 30 year old mum who's still carrying a bit of baby weight and pisses herself when she makes a sudden movement never mind vaulting over soft play blocks to find my child. To be fair I was getting into the swing of it and was imagining myself in total wipeout totally smashing it and winning the prize. Whatever that may be.

After finding my way halfway up I realised I was stuck and not just a little bit stuck but oh fuck I'm actually stuck. Cursing myself and my toddler I started to ponder my life trapped. And if work would accept my excuse tomorrow. Of course soft play was now busy as schools had kicked out. So eventually a nice member of staff noticed that an almost 30 year old woman probably shouldn't be in the soft play area and enquired if I needed help. In a tone we usually use with the small children or elderly. But fuck it help was help. There appeared to be a back entrance which I assume the staff use to access it rather than doing what I do. And she let me out. I didn't know I could bend that way to get out but desperation. Leaving me to do the walk of shame past a multitude of parents.

To add insult to injury my little cherub had decided mummy wasn't coming and had gone down the slide that was oh so scary a while ago and had fucked off back to the toddler section.

I can never go back.
I'm googling soft play centres in the Bermuda triangle and consoling myself with wine.

Feel free to laugh at my pain or share some of your own!

Not soft play but a toddler play session at the local gymnastics club.

At the end we would all sit for rhyme time and noticed an unaccompanied toddler looking a bit lost. On investigating a poor mum was found stuck drowning in one of those foam pits that appear bottomless, she'd got sucked down with only her arms left sticking out waving frantically, took four of us to pull the poor woman out! She looked mortified but if you've ever ventured into one of those pits they're bloody terrifying, I lost more than one sock whilst struggling out!

ColourMeExhausted · 21/09/2022 21:07

I can believe it. MIL got herself stuck at soft play once. She was lying there blocking the way so all these small kids were just leaping over her! I've had a few moments of 'eek I'm not going to get through this'...our local soft play structure makes pot holing look easy!

Also, this reminds me that DS used to climb to the highest points at that age, get stuck and cry pitifully for me. Had to go and rescue him every time.

Fuck me there are some miserable gits on here tonight 😂

Hope you're not too traumatised OP, 100% something I would do and gave me a good laugh.

unicornsinspace · 21/09/2022 21:09

So many jealous people on this thread 🙄

Your writing style is great OP! Very entertaining, not you getting stuck though!

MiseryWIthAStent · 21/09/2022 21:10

I didn't get stuck in soft play but I did get a very big look of disappointment and disapproval when I collected DS from his second week at school and the teacher told me he had been pouring watering cans over his head and when she got down to explain they don't do that he tipped it all over her head. When she told me I couldn't help but smirk, I didn't mean to at all and I of course told DS not to again but she wasn't happy at all. I couldn't wait for him to leave that class 😅

fyn · 21/09/2022 21:10

I feel your pain, I had to scale one last week at eight months pregnant. I’m sure it was quite the sight watching me try to squeeze my bump around the obstacles to rescue my two year old who had quite happily been down the slide a number of times before.

Climbingthelaundrymountain · 21/09/2022 21:12

This did make me laugh! It reminded me of the time I took ds1 age 2 to soft play. It was my due date with dd but she clearly wasn't in a rush so off we went. He decides that is the day he's going to climb all the way to the top and get stuck up there. I had to try and wedge my 40 week bump sideways and all sorts trying to get up to rescue him and then go down the slide.

Mannymoomin · 21/09/2022 21:13

My most embarrassing moment.

My in laws are quite well to do and very old fashioned and conservative in their ways.

I, in comparison, am quite the commoner, like to mess about, have a good prank and a laugh.

Pitch black at night I seen a good friend driving down the road, gave them my middle finger and swirled it around the air for a good 20 seconds stood in the middle of the road until they got closer and was forced to stop for me.

Once they stopped, discovered it wasn’t my friend but was actually one of my in laws.

They have never brought up the subject, but lord I just wanted the ground to swallow me up and I’ve never been able to look at them the same again

HappyHoppyHippo · 21/09/2022 21:13

Brilliant OP, really made me lol

What on earth did you say when they stopped?!!

love your writing style op - very engaging and entertaining!

TheVolturi · 21/09/2022 21:21

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I love this op! Quit your job and blog.

I put my hand over my mouth in shock and shame, profusely apologised and truthfully said I thought it was a friend, who I was supposed to be meeting in the area at the time.

I think somehow they definitely did not believe me.

It still makes me cringe thinking about it, DH finds it absolutely hilarious 😂

SingingSands · 21/09/2022 21:23

Brilliant, OP. Reminded me of the time I had to clamber up after my own tear away toddler. As he sprinted towards the giant slide, dodging and scaling obstacles like some sort of tiny ninja, I gave chase, and ran smack into a low bar. Knocked myself out cold. Had a hellish concussion afterwards!

pinok · 21/09/2022 21:28

I haven't got stuck thankfully but if it helps...
DC2 managed to drag a little ride on tractor up 3 floors of soft play frame to the top of wavy slid, proceeded to ride down slide and we got banned!

😂

Quirrelsotherface · 21/09/2022 21:29

OP, a well-written post is akin to sacrilege on MN, apparently. Who knows why!
I enjoyed it anyway, nothing embarrassing ever happened during my own soft play days but boy, am I glad they're over!

Bimblybomeyelash · 21/09/2022 21:31

Every soft play I have ever been in has weary mums and dads climbing up after their nimble 2 year olds. I wasn’t aware you could actually get stuck though.

03X · 21/09/2022 21:32

My (very overweight - saying for context) mum got stuck in a tunnel at soft play once. Well she wasn’t stuck she just panicked 🤣

TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination · 21/09/2022 21:44

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 21/09/2022 20:44

I bloody love soft play when I always thought I'd hate it. Now i offer to go all the time purely so I can go on the big wavy slides!

Your one sounds small though. There's always been plenty room at the two I've been to.
I think I lost a pound in weight each time I went too!

@Hungrycaterpillarsmummy

you need to 'wear' an OLD cardigan, then take it off to use in the slide!! Best Fun Ever (dressed anyway).

@VioletInsolence you ckearky haven't been to many sift okay places.

@softplayfail yep, work on your attention span, give up the day job & start writing!! You have a great style..

I used to love soft play !! I only just realised reading your list that it would be a 'no go' fir me these days 😭too many joints no longer flexible enough!!

one time we had the fire brigade turn up! A Dad had got stuck in an enclosed twisty slide. The staff were unable/not allowed?! to unscrew the top of a segment.

it was probably about 15 years ago when we were all still allowed to have fun and also stand around gawping at him being rescued!!

my biggest surprise when he was rescued, was how he'd got himself into the slide!! He wasn't slim!!

I wouldn't brave one now, if I could get up there, for fear of the same thing happening!

kessiebird · 21/09/2022 21:46

That made me lol..

And reminded me. I was taken out by a kids electric go kart at a soft play centre, I stupidly balanced on the edge of it while putting the £1 in the slot and DS pressed the pedal HARD.

Windinthepillows · 21/09/2022 21:47

Are people actually critical of op for a well written post, Jesus.

SleepingAgent · 21/09/2022 21:54

The soft play we went to years ago had a massive frame, a big wide gap of wooden floor and then the tables for parents to sit and have a coffee.

Rather stupidly, the place had a few of those low wooden ride on toys that look like psychotic ladybirds etc and toddlers would whizz around the bare floor between the frame area and the tables. Not the best idea.

My first visit, I didn't know about this. No kids were riding the toys when we went in. I was standing at the "fence" of the soft play frame watching DC when something hard painfully rammed into my calves and ankles. I automatically kicked backwards and only then turned round to see a demented turtle toy flying backwards with a screaming mini ram raider rapidly heading for a bouncy encounter with the hard floor.

Oops.

Museya15 · 21/09/2022 21:55

This is hilarious OP!!🤣🤣

PinkStickleBrick · 21/09/2022 21:56

I saw a man possibly over 6 foot wedged into a stair part of soft play. I'm presuming they called the fire brigade to cut him out

LimboLass · 21/09/2022 22:03

Good luck with the blog
