Massive embarrassing moment at soft play

softplayfail · 21/09/2022 18:40

I work a very typical Monday to Thursday office job. Admin. You know. Usual. I had some annual leave so decided to book a day off. I have a 2 year old very energetic toddler. I joke she's like a labrador puppy. Needs walking and exercise in all weather's. Had the bright idea to go to soft play. We don't go often and it would burn off some energy. This idea would come round to bite me in the arse.

So off we plodded. Now I don't know about the soft play near you but ours is split into toddler and babies and then at the upper end is a bigger kids section. I got my tea and watched my little angel playing in the ball pit with some other toddlers. Feeling almost a Christmas card moment of 'this is one of those memories I'll look back one day'. If this was a film heart warming music would be playing. I turned to add my milk to my tea and in the 4.6 seconds my back was turned she'd sprinted up to the big kids section like a cat seeing a mouse. Didn't even know she could move that quick. But we live and learn.

I gave chase. It wasn't overly busy but I couldn't see her. Slightly cursing myself now for not dressing her all in yellow and maybe adding some chtlristmas lights round her neck for ease of finding. By the time I'd found her she was at the top of the soft play section. Just sitting there mockingly calling mama. Now she was about 4 centimeteres from the slide. The slide that leads to the bottom. So looking like a child abductor I tried to entice her down the slide. Offering her sweets at one point just cementing my slightly creepy vibes I'm giving off. Doesn't help she's a clone of her dad and the only similarity we share is she has the same dimple in her cheek but I doubt that would stand up in court if I was accused of abduction. She started to do that awful high pitched whiney cry toddlers excel at. I translated it as a combination of 'come and get me if you want me and 'that slide is way too tall and if you don't get me I'm stuck here forever'

So this is where my mistakes began. I decided to go find my way to the top. Now these were clearly designed for at most a tall 10 year old not a nearly 30 year old mum who's still carrying a bit of baby weight and pisses herself when she makes a sudden movement never mind vaulting over soft play blocks to find my child. To be fair I was getting into the swing of it and was imagining myself in total wipeout totally smashing it and winning the prize. Whatever that may be.

After finding my way halfway up I realised I was stuck and not just a little bit stuck but oh fuck I'm actually stuck. Cursing myself and my toddler I started to ponder my life trapped. And if work would accept my excuse tomorrow. Of course soft play was now busy as schools had kicked out. So eventually a nice member of staff noticed that an almost 30 year old woman probably shouldn't be in the soft play area and enquired if I needed help. In a tone we usually use with the small children or elderly. But fuck it help was help. There appeared to be a back entrance which I assume the staff use to access it rather than doing what I do. And she let me out. I didn't know I could bend that way to get out but desperation. Leaving me to do the walk of shame past a multitude of parents.

To add insult to injury my little cherub had decided mummy wasn't coming and had gone down the slide that was oh so scary a while ago and had fucked off back to the toddler section.

I can never go back.
I'm googling soft play centres in the Bermuda triangle and consoling myself with wine.

Feel free to laugh at my pain or share some of your own!

My husband once got stuck in one of those roller things trying to get to then DSS 3. He had to call me from his mobile and I had to pull him out backward by his feet.

itsgettingweird · 21/09/2022 20:01

I went into a soft play in the summer - and I'm much older than you!

I do respite care for children with disabilities and our 14 yo young crave wanted to use the soft play in the farm we visited.

Said he was probably hopefully too old. But No! They told me "sure - he can go in".

Now the other carer is in her 20's and about 5". I'm 5"8 so much taller.

And 14yo who are also quite tall are apparently fast too.

I thought I was either going to get stuck in a tunnel or break a knee cap Grin

The second time he wanted to use it I bribed the younger fitter of our double act to accompany him alone and I'd treat her to a coffee! So she played ninja warrior and I queued.

Lmao, I used to work in a soft play. It absolutely was not designed for adults, the signs stated no adults on the equipment but the fuckers would still try to go down the spiral slide and you could hear the friction burns from the bottom. Unlucky for them when they got stuck there was no staff exit just the park maintenance and tools! At least you didn’t piss yourself OP

This was a great read OP.

My bundle of joy is only 6mo but is a labrador puppy in training, so this is just the type of escapade I can see myself in in a couple of years 😁

JelloFishy · 21/09/2022 20:16

@deflatedbirthday I got stuck in one of those when I was about 8 months pregnant with my second. Obviously thought I was not quite as big as I was. My mate had to shove me through as I was literally stuck half way through. She was laughing so much I hoped she would piss herself to detract from the wedge whale. 🐳

WhatInFreshHell · 21/09/2022 20:17

I really enjoyed reading this OP, you've got a lovely writing style! Sorry you got stuck, also happened to me once!

CornedBeef451 · 21/09/2022 20:19

I used to take my niece to soft play and once was convinced she was trapped in a huge, enclosed slide.

I edged down it slowly and then slipped and gave myself terrible friction burns on each elbow.

She was fine, wasn't trapped at all but was very impressed by my injuries.

deflatedbirthday · 21/09/2022 20:20

@JelloFishy I have to admit that I was absolutely crying with laughter. One of those silent shaking hurts your stomach laughs. I had to compose myself to be of any use in pulling him through!

Pumperthepumper · 21/09/2022 20:20

My friend once put her hand in a dirty nappy at the bottom of a ball pit 🤢

SpringGreenShine · 21/09/2022 20:27

One of our children wet down the huge new giant moulded slide on a day, thankfully, when there was only us in , at a newly installed indoor play area
I sent the older children up and down with paper towels and wipes that were luckily in my baby changing bag.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 21/09/2022 20:30

There's some real fun sponges on here, why bother commenting if you don't like the ops writing 🤔

Ive never gotten stuck but I did have to climb a few when my 4th was younger as he's autistic and would sometimes sit himself down and refuse to move

From seeing soft play recently with dgd and reading on here I'm sure loads of people get stuck these days due to all the helicoptering that takes place!

Fluffygreenslippers · 21/09/2022 20:30

Well at least you didn’t poo yourself, it could be worse 🤣 Very funny!

Mannymoomin · 21/09/2022 20:30

OP, this was a great story, not for the embarrassment, but just for the way in which you wrote it.
Very funny, (sorry probably not for you) but your writing style is what made all the comical.
Brilliant, you really need to consider getting into writing

WonderingWanda · 21/09/2022 20:32

Ha, post giving birth to my second dc we took the eldest to a soft play. He was desperate for me to go in and I didn't think twice about going through the roller bar section as I had done previously (although not for some time due to the pregnancy bump). Oh how it hurt when I got as far as my over inflated breasts and realised I didn't fit. My husband helpfully tried to push me through, luckiky my breasts didn't burst but ldid leak all over my top which was pretty embarrassing!

MoreRainbowsPlease · 21/09/2022 20:36

I'm another one who at 8 months pregnant got stuck between the 2 foam roller things. I was chasing ds1 who was a nightmare at those things (he was later diagnosed with autism) and thought I could fit. I very quickly realised I couldn't and then had that horrible cold sweaty panic when I didn't know what to do. In the end I couldn't go backwards so I had to push through hoping that ds2 was cushioned enough in my womb. DP did the soft play trips after that.

Another situation which wasn't really embarrassing for anyone, but was one of those what the hell moments didn't involve my ds's. We were at a soft play and as they were pretty old by this point (I think they were 9 and 6) DP and I were watching them but sat having a coffee. Suddenly this upset kid appears behind them on the slide but he is absolutely covered with blood. I ran straight over to see what had happened. He was about 4 and wasn't really able to tell me, but I quickly realised that the blood was coming from his nose. It was absolutely pouring so I shouted for one of my ds's to get some tissues from the toilet we were right next to. Meanwhile DP located the boys mum who arrived at the same time as the first aider from the soft play. The mum freaked out when she saw all the blood (which made the kid cry more) so DP, Me and the soft play worker are trying to calm them both down. Eventually after a few mins the bleeding slowed down and eventually stopped and we were able to work out from what the child said that nothing had happened to him, he hadn't hurt himself, he'd just started having a horrendous nose bleed. Once mum calmed down she said she was rather embarrassed to admit it, but she was actually a nurse and was normally ok with blood, but she said the fact it was her son's blood just made her panic. The child wanted to go back in the soft play, but I think Mum just needed to go home and have a stiff drink!

The poor soft play workers did then have to clean up the slide which looked like a murder had taken place. I have dealt with many kids nose bleeds, but never one that seemed to produce so much blood!

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 21/09/2022 20:37

DD when she was 3 went up one of those big inflatable slides. Was massive. Determined to have a go she went up. Then sat at the top for 10 minutes refusing to come down no matter how many other kids tried helping her. I had to take off my shoes, go up and slide down with her. Then spent 20 minutes laid on the floor at the bottom due to a blood pressure problem I couldn't stand up afterwards. The staff nearly got an ambulance 😂

C0rnflake · 21/09/2022 20:39

My DD3 insists she only wants to play with me at soft play and drags me round. I have to shuffle myself down the slide cos my arse is too big 🤦🏻‍♀️

APurpleSquirrel · 21/09/2022 20:40

VioletInsolence · 21/09/2022 19:35

Hmmmm it’s pretty impossible to get stuck at soft play….you’d know that if you’d actually been… they can’t design them like that because they’re full of adults.

Depends on the soft play!
Some are easy enough to get round (I'm a sz22 & 5'7, & I can get round many); others are impossible unless you're a child or very small/thin. Those roller things for one; or if the alternating platforms are too close together.
One local SP has far too narrow platforms & no other way up, except the slide - I try to avoid that one in case any of my DC get into trouble. Other ones (usually the bigger ones) are easy to get round, have multiple entries/routes.
I tried a roller once - no fucking chance!

BrokenWing · 21/09/2022 20:41

You should try the ball swap next, they are right buggers to try to stand back up in once you are down. Try the swamp being cleared by a staff member incase you landed on a small child and their parents watching you flounder about like an overweight bambi on ice.

notice how I did that in one paragraph

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 21/09/2022 20:44

I bloody love soft play when I always thought I'd hate it. Now i offer to go all the time purely so I can go on the big wavy slides!

Your one sounds small though. There's always been plenty room at the two I've been to.
I think I lost a pound in weight each time I went too!

IneedcoffeeinanIV · 21/09/2022 20:47

Apparently you can't write anything with correct spelling, punctuation or something they can slag off. This was excellent and I'm glad you're free!!

tillytoodles1 · 21/09/2022 20:48

I too my niece to soft play once. She wanted to go on the big slide so we climbed the steps, only to see that the entrance at the top consisted of two foam rollers. She got through easily, but I was too fat to follow, but to short to climb over. She sat at the top waiting so in the end I had to attempt to climb over, only to see her wizz down the slide. No way was I going back so I went down the slide by myself looking like a big idiot.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 21/09/2022 20:54

"Admin. You know. Usual."

Yeh I'd say it is a bit weird.
To be fair I enjoyed it up to the point of the "pissing" and then sort of lost enthusiasm for it. It just sounded crass after that!

ChimbarasiKotapaxi · 21/09/2022 20:56

Thank you OP You have brightened my evening and made me laugh

glittereyelash · 21/09/2022 20:59

Reminds me of that episode in peppa pig where all the grown ups get stuck in the soft play.
