Omg I've crashed the car. How much is this going to cost?

I'm in a right state and my husband is going to be furious. Is this really bad? Are we talking ££££? I'm so upset.

It'll just cost the amount of your insurance excess.

Don't panic. You're safe and that's all that matters. Breathe, get a cuppa and get ready to fill in forms from the insurance company. Phone them ASAP though, you may have courtesy car cover.

Yes I clearly know it should of been in park which is why I said I thought it was

For future reference you should always apply the parking brake too, for extra security.

It depends also on whether you want it "looking fine" or "back to pristine new".

When a car went into the back of us and made a bend in the bumper and a dent in the back door we got 3 quotes:

  1. £2000 which included a full new back door and new bumper
  2. £800 which was a new bumper and back door repaired
  3. £600 which was a new bumper and back door repaired.

We went with 3, and not through insurance, as it was an old car (£2k wrote it off) and you could never have told that it had been repaired afterwards.
But if we'd had a brand new beautiful car we'd have gone for 1, through insurance.

The other thing though is also to get it checked that there isn't internal damage that isn't immediately visible. We had a friend who works in a garage check it out and we were lucky to find there was no other damage.

I've never had to press the handbrake button in this car, it has auto handbrake but noticed after the button to disable it was lit up. We had the car cleaned yesterday so maybe it got pressed by accident. I don't really know what happened. It's an automatic and everything is buttons rather than levers.

That’s an insurance job. Your premium may go up £50 for the next few years, still a darn sight cheaper than just paying to have it fixed. Last time I had a bumper and an indicator lense replaced the bill was £2.6k. If you need a new LED headlight that’s at least a grand on its own.

The problem is today that parts come in a whole unit which makes it expensive.

This is not a terrible thing. It happens all the time. However if your OH is trying to make you feel awful then he is a twat.
