I'm in a right state and my husband is going to be furious. Is this really bad? Are we talking ££££? I'm so upset.

Honestly I don't think it looks that bad. What did you hit?

I would personally take it to a mechanic get them to check it out and make sure there's no major damage & just fix myself/replace bumper and whatever panels need sorting out

cultkid · 20/09/2022 18:57

I think it will be 4-5k including a courtesy car

Is it a Tiguan ?

cultkid · 20/09/2022 18:58

Insurance job x

Lavender2021 · 20/09/2022 18:58

You may also need a new car seat for your son depending how fast you were driving. You would have to check with it's manufacturer.

ChickenGotLegs · 20/09/2022 19:02

Oh that's an insurance job for sure. I drive a 2012 Volvo V70, my front plastic grill is cracked where the badge is, priced a new one out of curiosity, dealers quoted £550! Could obviously get it cheaper from a scrappy but Jesus what an insane price... I've learned to live with it and always will! Your all safe that's the main thing.

omgnonono · 20/09/2022 19:04

We had stopped but on a slope so we just rolled into a building Sad it wasn't with enough force to harm me/bump/toddler but somehow still enough to knacker the front of the car. No my husbands being fine about it just didn't want to go through insurance at first but we will phone around some garages tomorrow and see. It was my toddler saying silly mummy crashed the car, not my husband. Its just annoying! We're meant to be going on holiday on Thursday, kind of need a car for that 🙈

Well your husband is stupid if he doesnt pay for no claims protection

omgnonono · 20/09/2022 17:59

I thought I was in park and I wasn't, I turned around to pass something to my toddler and next thing I knew I'd crashed Sad it was just stupidity so I imagine he'll be pretty annoyed at the cost if it's going to be thousands 😭

At least you hit something rather than someone and you’ll definitely check it’s in park in the future.

Fatballs · 20/09/2022 19:07

When I crashed my car, it didn’t put my insurance up at all. It put my husbands insurance up £60, which annoyed him a bit.

passport123 · 20/09/2022 19:07

Do you have a protected NCB?

Kingstonmumof1 · 20/09/2022 19:11

Don't forget you're obliged to report the incident to the insurance but that doesn't mean you need to make the claim. Can invalidate your insurance otherwise. If you pay for the repairs yourself then just ring them up afterwards to close it down.

TheChosenTwo · 20/09/2022 19:12

When I totally smashed my car up (as in crashed into someone while actively driving) dh was more concerned that I was okay.
When I have annoying little scrapes and bumps (2 in the first 2 years of driving and none in the last 10 by the way in case something thinks I’m a clumsy arse driver!) then yes he’s annoyed as am I! Some things just ARE annoying. People are allowed to be a bit pissed off at things that are irritating inconveniences, it doesn’t make her husband a terrible person!
of course all that matters is that everyone in the car is okay but that doesn’t mean that once that initial “yes everyone’s fine” is over that the practicalities set in and what you think might be a little scratch ends up being 3 panels that need totally replacing!
glad you’re okay op, it can all be fixed, but yeah, it’s annoying at the time. 🌺

Pixiedust1234 · 20/09/2022 19:13

Everyone keeps saying claim on insurance but which type do you have? Comprehensive or third party? Do you have your no claims protected?

Be glad you are both okay and always check you are in park. Everyone has one of these life lessons, some are just lucky enough to get away with it.

girlmom21 · 20/09/2022 19:16

Most insurers caps the NCB OP and you won't lose all 20 years so your discount is still likely to be very similar

User1754983 · 20/09/2022 19:21

You will likely get a hire car as part of the insurance for your holiday, be aware though it may not be the same size car. Someone went into the back of DH and we had to cancel our caravan holiday as the hire car was quite small and no towbar.

WhackingPhoenix · 20/09/2022 19:21

Only on MN can a woman admit that she took her eyes off the road and crashed the car and it’s still the husband who is an arsehole for daring to be pissed off that she made such a costly, careless error.

I’d be livid.

Well your husband is stupid if he doesnt pay for no claims protection

Paying to protect a no claims discount is usually a waste of money because they load the underlying premium after you’ve had an accident anyway and only ‘protect’ the % discount. Your better off accepting a higher excess than paying to insure against making an insurance claim, assuming you don’t make a claim every year. And if you do claim that often, they remove the protection after 2 or 3 claims anyway…

Accident + protected NCB and your premiums will go up much less than accident + no protected NCB

As are you if you think it’s relevant.

EfficientDynamics · 20/09/2022 19:42

I think you'll need a new bumper. I'd be surprised if a smart repairer could do much as it's broken not just scuffed

It looks like a pretty new car, I'd say your talking a grand or two. Bumper, paint, labour, vat plus other parts, light?

This bit doesn’t make sense.

”So we just rolled into a building”; it sounds as though you don’t actually know what to do when you stop on a slope; is that right?

I could understand if you said you forgot to put it in park, or to use the parking brake, but what does the “so” bit above mean?

Cillery · 20/09/2022 19:46

omgnonono · 20/09/2022 18:35

We're going to have to claim I've got maternity leave coming up soon there's no way I can afford £2k if people are right Sad I feel so stupid Sad my toddler isn't helping he keeps walking around talking about how mummy crashed the car and made him cry, isn't mummy silly. Talk about salt in the wound!!

Oh come on! Stop beating yourself up! We’ve all done it! That momentary loss of concentration and bang! DH shouldn’t get on to you as he might be the next to do it. Unfortunately these things happen to the best of people. You are not stupid because you’ve pranged the car. You are okay and the toddler is okay. That is what matters.

omgnonono · 20/09/2022 19:54

Yes I clearly know it should of been in park which is why I said I thought it was

They’re called accidents for a reason, OP. Don’t be too hard on yourself 💐

OneCup · 20/09/2022 20:04

I know how frustrating this feels when things like this happen. It may not feel this way but sometimes I wonder if these are a blessing in disguise: it makes you extra careful in the future. I appreciate you won't be quite feeling this now though!

The damage doesn't look too bad. Could you perhaps just replace the headlight? The more damaged your car is, the less you have to worry about future scratches and dents :)
