If you have a toddler how will you watch the Queens funeral?

As in, how will you keep your toddler occupied whilst trying to watch proceedings? (To those who are interested in watching it obviously).

Not smug at all! Hence why I said some "can't" rather than "won't". It's down to personalities, not parenting. No doubt my second will be far more high maintenance.

SquigglePigs · 19/09/2022 10:34

We're recording it and watching it later when she's in bed. I'm not going to try with her around. It's not fair on her and we're unlikely to be able to pay proper attention to it either.

BertieBotts · 19/09/2022 10:39

I was going to just stick it on the TV as background, like I did with the royal wedding, but it turns out youtube on the TV has parental restrictions on that disallow live feeds XD so I have turned it off. Not that bothered about watching it anyway.

Eeiliethya · 19/09/2022 10:40

Mines 5 so not a toddler anymore but:

iPad and snacks.

I've got some Sprite Zero on hand ready for further negotiation when the initial bribery starts to wear thin.

RedDwarfGarbagePod · 19/09/2022 10:42

I'm watching it covered in sick from the four month old with the jaunty tunes of the Peppa Pig iPad app coming from the three year old on my right.

LoopDiL00p · 19/09/2022 11:00

We picked up a bunch of new toys yesterday and only brought them out this morning.

JenniferBarkley · 19/09/2022 11:10

Mine are 4 and 2, I've cashed in some time I'm owed for DH to take them out for a couple of hours, he has no interest. The 4 year old in particular wouldn't benefit from seeing this.

Whyismycatanasshat · 19/09/2022 11:17

One of the nearly 4 year olds is watching it with me, super interested since I switched it in at 10.45, lots of questions being asked.
The other has the ipad currently and is watching number blocks… I’m going to watch until 12ish, then tune in again around 3pm, maybe 4pm.
As an aside, we’re on the Scottish border, everything south of the border seems closed, north is a bit more hit and miss.

Tamtam86 · 19/09/2022 11:19

I've put my 2 year old to bed for an early nap so I can watch it. My 4 year old has been watching with us, she's quite interested in it all, but now she's getting bored she's gone off to play in her room, but she's not a toddler.

Goldbar · 19/09/2022 11:19

Duct tape? Worked a treat for lockdown meetings when we were wfh without childcare.

YellowTreeHouse · 19/09/2022 11:21

DH has taken her out for a nap.

JennyWren87 · 19/09/2022 11:33

Well usually we have dinosaurs on, today we have the funeral on. He'll cope. He'll have some tantrums, will need a bit of distraction but he'll get over it and start playing with his toys. He's currently absolutely littered the front room with every toy possible.

Mommabear20 · 19/09/2022 11:51

DH and I are watching funeral, DC (2&1) are playing on the floor 🤷‍♀️

Randomcommentary · 19/09/2022 11:53

I’d prioritise my child over a funeral.

surreygirl1987 · 19/09/2022 11:54

I'm not even going to try. Might watch a bit later when the kids have gone to bed (not love obviously). Going to take them out to the beach. Family time is precious and my husband and I work full time... going to make the most of the extra day.

TheNonsensePotter · 19/09/2022 11:59

Mine have got free reign of cbeebies in the other room, although I don't think they're watching it just playing (very rare occurance).
We did all watch the procession into the church and then they got bored.
I'm now sat on the floor in our main living room watching it on a very small TV balanced on a box- we're in the middle of decorating so the room is completely empty but at least I'm getting some peace. Apart from a minor interruption of someone being hit on the head with a tube of Pringles.

Do toddlers not play with toys Anymore then while their mum and dad watch tv ?

Mine doesn’t. She wants to be played and interacted with.

roarfeckingroarr · 19/09/2022 10:25

Mine is just pootling about the living room while we watch it, chatting with us and playing with his toys.

That's what mine would have done at that age. I find this thread unbelievable to be honest. Do parents these days think they can't even watch something they want on t.v ? It's as though the kids are In charge Mad

obsessedwithsleep · 19/09/2022 12:19

iplayer this evening with a glass of wine.

Nothing to do with kids being in charge. How odd.

I just don’t want to sit and ignore my child to watch tv, whatever is on.

Common sense at last

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 19/09/2022 12:21

We went to the park so missed the start and now it’s play as usual with the tv in the background. You think it’s hard watching with a toddler try a 5yr old who wants the tv back.

Sofachoices · 19/09/2022 12:36

Mine doesn’t get tv at all normally so was quite interested to watch (as much as any 22m old can be!)

He liked watching the procession and pointing out all the different colours he could see in the uniforms. Huge appreciation for the horses and for all the different hats worn 😅 spent most of the procession with a plastic bowl on his head repeating “it’s all about a queen!” (his favourite part of Cat’s Cookbook by Julia Donaldson 🤣)

Paused it while I made him lunch and put him down for his normal nap and now I’m catching up on the service 👍🏻

PeekabooAtTheZoo · 19/09/2022 12:39

Can't believe it! We cleared the usual Duplo carpet and got out the train set, and (this never ever happens) the oldest played with it semi-quietly while the youngest just wanted to chew on a piece of train track and breastfeed. We got through the whole service without having to turn it off or them demanding cars on the TV and are now watching the parade. Oldest has only just started complaining after 90 mins. I'm not sure if we will ever break that record.
