I struggle to sleep , my mind races .

googling for ideas, I came upon ASMR .

Anyone tried it ? It seems to not just be for sleep.

is it worth a go and any ones people can recommend ?

thanks

This is Gibi

Neverendingdust · 18/09/2022 00:52

I watch ASMR videos on YouTube all the time to help induce sleep. Michael Sealey has a great channel on YT for sleep hypnosis too.

I like Southern ASMR. She's an American lady called Mary with a very soothing voice. She does videos just talking, or going around shops giving a whispery commentary. Also she goes into Dollar Tree and tidies the shelves (which sounds weird but I have never not fallen asleep watching her do that)

I tried ASMR Couple but that's a lot of back scratching and picking bits of dandruff and the wife had really long scratchy nails. Didn't like that.
I don't like all the tapping either.

ThistleSifter · 18/09/2022 01:08

“The French Whisperer ASMR” is good.

Daisychainsandglitter · 18/09/2022 07:55

Yes i do- I really like Gibi, Southern, Whispers Red and Gentle Whispering.
ASMR latte and Tingting are also quite good.
I used to watch it to fall asleep a lot but I've found that I've become a little desensitised to it so have had to have a break for a bit.

Tractordiggerdump · 18/09/2022 08:00

You tube - oddly satisfying

ThickCutSteakChips · 18/09/2022 12:10

I love ASMR, not for sleeping, just for watching. I don't like the whispering ones, or the ones with silly sounds, microphone tapping and all that though. I like the 'unintentional' role play ones like medical examinations, posture adjusting, haircut etc. Where they are just someone using a very soft spoken voice, but it could be real? There is something about the sense of purpose in them, and that the person knows what they are doing, what they are looking for etc that is so relaxing!

My favourites are Chilli B, Jelly Bean Green, August ASMR, Dr Gill (who is actually actually real doctor and they are real exams but he has just got a big following now!). I did used to also like Be Brave Be You, but her stuff is getting a bit samey now.

I don't tell anyone I watch this stuff, not even my family, I feel like such a weirdo! 😂

Sparklingbrook · 18/09/2022 12:58

I know what you mean about feeling like a weirdo. ‘What you watching Mum?’
’Oh just a lady facing up the OTC medicine in Dollar Tree’

😂

Thanks everyone, will check out all the people and links .

Have done a little reading and it seems not everyone will react with “tingles” to the triggers . So if I’m not one of them, and don’t think I am, will it help me sleep ?

Another option is to listen to boring things that might make me sleep !

Am looking at all options.

I did try those guided type sleep things such as breathing, or being talked through a forest sort of thing, but didn’t shut down my brain !

Tbh, I think the 'tingles' thing is kind of bullshit. Like you are special if you get tingles or something? I occasionally get actual tingles on the top of my head and in my neck watching these videos, but mostly I just enjoy watching them. So don't worry about that too much.

TheVanguardSix · 18/09/2022 13:12

I do yoga nidra or better known as shavasana. It is not yoga itself but part of the mental practice of yoga. It is the ‘corpse pose’. You literally lie down in bed or on the sofa, cover yourself with a blanket, and listen into those headphones. I highly recommend Caroline Wirthle on Spotify. She’s German and I speak both German and English which is how I happened upon her. But mostly, she does more English speaking guided yoga nidra than German. She has a really really soothing voice. It’s been life changing for me.

For anyone in London, the Design Museum has an ASMR exhibition going on. It’s really cool and I’d not really noticed how ASMRish Bjork is until now. And they have a Bob Ross room so… it’s proper. 😆
It’s an extremely relaxing yet engaging day out. I took my 12 and 8 year old with me.

TheVanguardSix · 18/09/2022 13:14

Yoga nidra is yogic sleep. That’s what I should have written previously.

I don't get tingles but I fall asleep very quickly. I like the ones that are close to your face which are classed as 'personal attention' and ones that are lots of hand movements.
You need to just search for ASMR on YouTube and click on random videos to see what type you like.

FleshLiabilities · 18/09/2022 13:16

This is Dr Gill who was referred to by a pp - I love the 'unintentional' ASMR, can't be doing with the overdone whispering and lip smacking.

kimchifox · 18/09/2022 13:16

I think it will help with sleep even if you don't get the "tingles". I do as it was a "thing" for me before I found asmr channels - but I don't always get that now as I'm a bit desensitised to the sound triggers. People eating enrages me too so that's not at all relaxing. I like whispering or soft spoken videos best. There are some people who just read things like magazines or catalogues or out of copyright books - it's random but relaxing.

For sleeping purposes I think it's just a bit like when you were a child and you nodded off to adults talking (if you did) or falling asleep in front of the TV. Something which distracts from your own thoughts, but which you are not required to fully engage in.

Thanks. That makes sense re having speaking but not feeling the need to concentrate but still listening so distracting from thoughts.

You just type the name in and they are videos with sound. There are other suggestions that will come up.

MoriaRoseForever · 19/09/2022 11:08

I tried an hour of binurnal beats , didn't seem to work for me .

Had a nosey round various asmr you tubes . Some seemed better for just listening and more for watching.

Will test out some tonight.

Thanks, this is helpful .

So ASMR is good for relaxing as well as sleep, would you watch those or listen or mix of both? I also need to find ways to relax!

One of my favourite ASMRtists is Atmosphere.

Always adored this one particular video set in a Victorian tailors shop, she gets all the noises just right, the sewing machine, the scissors cutting fabric, buttons, etc.

MoriaRoseForever · 19/09/2022 11:41

This is really interesting, didn't know anything about asmr apart from seeing some things about it helps sleep.

So what else do people use it for as well as sleep ?

OP posts:
TWmover · 19/09/2022 12:06

I listen to the sleep stories on the Calm app and find some of the ASMR ones are ones I listen to repeatedly. Particularly the French whisperer as someone else mentioned.
