So confused by diets

Canthinkofaname79 · 17/09/2022 16:03

I need to lose weight but how,
I don't want to calorie count,
I've done low carb,
I've tried Michael mosesly fast 800,
I just feel totally overwhelmed by different diets and i end up not doing anything.

I have pre diabetes and also binge eating disorder, it's all a mess really.
Would low carb be best for me? Make me feel fuller? I just struggle not to binge on chocolate especially if I'm low or stressed. I am actually having counselling for the bingeing.

for pre diabetes you need low carb abd especially low sugar, there are other diabetic diets that are not as strict as Mosley fast 800 but until you sort out binge eating with your counsellor it won't work whatever diet you fgo as the binge undoes it all, dark 85% choclate is a lot carb and sugar but they mean a square so
you can feel fuller with good quality protein and lots of veg

PurpleBlis · 17/09/2022 16:07

Since you don't want to calorie count or get caught up with specific diets why not make really simple cut downs. So eat whatever you are eating now minus say two snacks. Try that for a week. If you can stick to it make another tweak on top of that like slightly reducing the carbs in your meals.

Brideandpredjudice · 17/09/2022 16:08

Nobody will ever lose weight successfully by dieting alone.

You need to focus less on food and more on exercise, it's the only way.

Is there a reason related to prediabetes that dont want to calorie count?
Just asking as I resisted for ages but its so simple, you feel totally in control and it is not forever - just 6 weeks then a week break, for example.

FitFat · 17/09/2022 16:09

Nonsense @Brideandpredjudice .

Nonsense @Brideandpredjudice .

Are you for real?

ZealAndArdour · 17/09/2022 16:11

If you’ve got binge eating disorder you shouldn’t really be doing any “diet” - any kind of dietary restriction feeds directly back into the binge/restrict cycle. So any loss will be impossible or to maintain in the long run.

Have you sought treatment for the BED?

This is absolutely wrong.

Indoctro · 17/09/2022 16:13

I used Saxenda to break my binge eating habit. 11 weeks on it , made the cycle stop.

I would try that.

OP has an eating disorder, calorie counting isn’t a safe or appropriate suggestion.

fallfallfall · 17/09/2022 16:13

Did you try the ONLINE version of Fast 800?
treatment for disorder first is my vote, what is your daily activity like?

Canthinkofaname79 · 17/09/2022 16:14

Yes I'm having counselling.

I get so overwhelmed by calorie counting and any sort of restrictive eating but then I see how fat I am and get really upset and food is my go to comfort. Its awful.

Speaking from experience, you need to fix your head and the weight loss will follow. Get some therapy for the binge eating disorder - only when that’s under control will you be able to eat healthily and lose weight.

ZealAndArdour · 17/09/2022 16:16

Canthinkofaname79 · 17/09/2022 16:14

Yes I'm having counselling.

Generic counselling? Or specialist ED counselling with someone appropriately qualified to work with the condition?

What has your counsellor said about your desire to go on a diet? Dieting isn’t normally allowed.

gwenneh · 17/09/2022 16:16

Good. What’s their advice on nutrition?

All diets are calorie deficits. How you get to and maintain that deficit is individual preference. It doesn’t have to be confusing.

You need to take in less energy in calories than you expend. That’s it.

FitFat · 17/09/2022 16:17

@Brideandpredjudice I am not being rude, sorry, it's just frustrating seeing misinformation about weight. Weight is 80% diet and 20% exercise, if that.
Low weight does not equate to good health or being fit. BUT to get low weight you need fewer calories. Amount used in exercise is minimal.
Exercise is GREAT and healthy and fun - defo! And very much a part of a healthy, fit person's life but it is nit necessary to simply lose weight.
Losing weight is simple, but not easy.

Katnissx · 17/09/2022 16:18

Look up Tim Ferris Slow Carb Diet, this has helped me massively. And you get one cheat day each week so can have some chocolate or whatever else you're craving.
Hope the counselling helps ❤️

Summerslam · 17/09/2022 16:20

Have you looked at the 16:8 diet? You can eat what you want but only within an 8 hour window. The rest of the time, you can drink plain fluids, black tea, coffee etc but no food. My older sister was pre-diabetic and she found the intermittent fasting a game changer. She lost over 3 stone in just under 4 months.

Prinnny · 17/09/2022 16:21

The only way to lose weight is by being in a calorie deficit, whether that be CC, keto or fasting. Keto can be very effective but takes a lot of commitment, it’s more of a lifestyle choice than a diet. Have you looked at intermittent fasting? If you looked at that alongside making healthy choices that could work, especially if you have a lot of weight to lose and don’t want to CC.

ZealAndArdour · 17/09/2022 16:22

Good grief, this post is so frustrating. If she’d said she was anorexic would you be suggesting calorie counting or vast swathes of time where she’s only allowed black tea?

seasidegirl83 · 17/09/2022 16:22

@Brideandpredjudice I lost 3 and a half stone purely through diet with no exercise at all. I started exercising after I lost the weight, and this helped me to tone up but exercise is not NEEDED for weight loss. You cannot out-run a bad diet!

FitFat · 17/09/2022 16:24

@Canthinkofaname79 Sorry you are struggling. You are not alone and so many people struggle just like you. You are not weak-willed, or bad so dont ever think that. You dont need to be ashamed. Its just some excess weight - You as a person are very special and important and have lots of value and are loved - this is irrelevant to the weight that you are carrying!
Can you join a walking club to meet other people who might be on a similar journey?
I know its confusing but you are motivated and keen. Just find a plan you think you can stick to LONG TERM and commit to it. Fasting etc is short term so pointless.
Hugs :) and positive thinkibg.
EDs suck!!!

Brideandpredjudice · 17/09/2022 16:25

I was trying to be helpful.

OP has disordered eating so I was pushing exercise in the hopes that she takes her focus away from food when that's already causing her problems.

People suggesting fad diets is not going to be good for OPs health but exercise could be.

gwenneh · 17/09/2022 16:26

I have a BED diagnosis myself. It has been under control for a year and I have lost six stone.

”Diets” are not recommended for anyone with this diagnosis. That includes low carb, intermittent fasting, WW, slimming world, Noom, etc.

The treatment is a complex process of unpicking the binge triggers and relearning physical cues. The recommendation is to bring the current food you eat into line based on adjusting portions and using physical hunger cues to determine mealtimes. That goes along with the rest of the therapy.

Changing what you eat, restricting food groups, and restrictions to eating times undermine the things the therapy for the ED are working on.
