Would you take an in season dog to the pub?

Dh and I disagreeing about this. Would you take a dog who is in season out for a meal in a pub beer garden at Saturday lunchtime? She would be on a lead the whole time.

Oh this is a really interesting response actually. I thought I was being silly over-cautious. 😬 Fwiw, I don’t think we should take her to the pub. But Dh is adamant that we should because ‘it will be fine’. No opportunity to put her in the car as we would be walking there (about 2 miles each way).

I’ve asked family members who are big dog breeders (hoping they’d back me up), but they said, ‘no, it’ll be fine, just tell intact dog owners to control their dogs!’ (Limited faith in that!). But they are such experienced dog owners and have 4 unspayed bitches for breeding, that it made me doubt myself.

Ddog will be getting done soon, but this is her first season and for her breed we’ve been advised to wait til after the 2nd season. Definitely no plans for puppies ever! We are on holiday so I think Dh feels guilty putting her in her crate while we go out (though she probably just wants a bloody rest away from our dc in peace!!).

Definitely not. It would be extremely unfair to the dog, for a start

No

Its a no from me also!

Its only a few years, a few times a year. Get a take-away/home delivery and go in a few weeks time! Or get her spayed! 🙄

YetAnotherSpartacus · 15/09/2022 21:45

No. But then surely unneutered male dogs are a problem too.

ItsnotaHenryMoore · 15/09/2022 21:46

Our dog would go mad every time a bitch was in heat within a radius of 2 miles - off his food, crying at the door etc.

Until we had him neutered...

No!

billybassie · 15/09/2022 21:52

Absolutely not, especially if you don't have a car with you. No way.

x2boys · 15/09/2022 21:54

No why would you do that ??

Maytodecember · 15/09/2022 21:56

No, I wouldn’t.

NalaNana · 15/09/2022 21:56

My girl recently started her first season while we were away last week. We couldn't leave her alone in the cottage so took her everywhere with us (beaches, pubs etc) and had no problems at all. Since we've been home I have been walking her once a day on lead at quiet times and have only had one off lead male approach. I apologised to the owner and assured her that it wasn't her fault that her dog ran over, explained she was in season, no issues. There's quite a close group of dog owners in our area and it's not unusual for people to bring their in season females out.

I'm interested by this thread as I was actually trying to decide whether or not to bring her with us for dinner tomorrow! Might give it a miss.

Florin · 15/09/2022 22:01

This is a really stupid idea especially with no car for a quick escape. Please don’t do this you could cause complete chaos at the pub. There could be several male dogs there and it could turn mental and I wouldn’t blame the owners for giving you a big piece of their mind as you will ruin their meals too. I wouldn’t walk 2 miles in the middle of the day either. Our dog came into heat slightly earlier than we thought and we were due to take her somewhere for a long weekend it would have been possible but just didn’t seem fair so we cancelled just days before and sucked it up.

theemmadilemma · 15/09/2022 22:07

No

LondonWolf · 15/09/2022 22:07

Absolutely not.

theemmadilemma · 15/09/2022 22:11

It's fairs do's if you want to risk an on lead walk, but sitting around in a pub garden knowing there will likely be other dogs there is just unfair for everyone.

LondonWolf · 15/09/2022 22:11

Baffled by this tbh. Please don't doubt yourself.

AngelicaElizaAndPeggy · 15/09/2022 22:14

Ew, no.

I'm addition to the humiliation she would feel as she sat there in her nappy, my dog felt really clingy and anxious when she was in season. She just wanted to be at home among all her familiar surroundings. I would just go to the pub and leave her to have a nice snooze, but come back quite early so that she doesn't get worried.

ThursdayLastWeek · 15/09/2022 22:21

As well as agreeing with almost all PPs about the trouble it might cause re: male dogs - isn’t it quite gross to force other diners to have either a) a bitch lying near them constantly cleaning herself or b) a bitch blessing everywhere??

ThursdayLastWeek · 15/09/2022 22:24

Oh I didn’t realise there were nappies for dogs!

decafsoyaflatwhite · 15/09/2022 22:26

I wouldn’t do it, but at the same time I have an entire male dog and I wouldn’t be annoyed if I was in the pub garden and it made him… amorous. It’s my choice to not neuter him, so I can’t really grumble if that causes me to be inconvenienced at times.

Although we had a neutered dog who was still very interested in bitches who were in season 😳

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 15/09/2022 22:28

There is a massive chance of a doggy pregnancy if one gets at her.

LondonWolf · 15/09/2022 22:29

Yes, it's a common thing unfortunately.

Oh that’s interesting, none of our other male dogs have been especially interested once they’ve been done. He was originally a stray though, so he would have been neutered quite late. I wonder if that makes a difference, or whether it’s just luck/temperament.

TheOtherWoman2 · 15/09/2022 22:34

Why not she’ll be hormonal and starving poor thing I think she’d appreciate a few chips
