The death of regular TV

Is it just us, or are the BBC going to really regret this wall to wall coverage of the mourning period.

Today we shall be watching "a queue".

No, we won't, we'll be watching streaming services. Bye-bye BBC, we won't be back.

I don't think the BBC are too worried.

Sparklingbrook · 15/09/2022 07:59

It was always going to be that way. I don’t think they’ll regret it, people will go back when normal service resumes. They’re watching the queue on ITV and Sky too.
YouTube is great for times like these.

dementedpixie · 15/09/2022 08:01

I haven't watched BBC since the wall to wall mourning of the Queen started. I'm just not that interested in it and its making me watch other things instead

PuttingDownRoots · 15/09/2022 08:04

Looking at the schedules Bbc1, 2 etc are normal, the queue watching us on BBC parliament.

Or are the schedules on Iplayer wrong?

HundredYearsOfSolitude · 15/09/2022 08:07

I've been watching Netflix and YT since last week. Great video on YT from Republic about Charles and the Duchy of Cornwall (made before he became king.)

I understand the historical significance of the queen's death but it's just too much seeing it 24 hours a day.

justasking111 · 15/09/2022 08:10

We hardly watch the BBC , haven't for years. News biased, soaps not interested, dramas too depressing. Streaming or reading my Go to now

BeyondMyWits · 15/09/2022 08:14

I used to sit and watch the news on one, whilst eating my breakfast, before work every morning. That habit has now been broken.

This morning they are literally filming a queue.

There seems to be no actual "news" any more.

Turn it over. Or off. Listen to radio news or read instead. It's not like it's for much longer.

Cynderella · 15/09/2022 08:28

We've been here for Diana - I've avoided all news since the announcement of her death. We used to watch the news once every evening. Will probably start again next week, but even then, we'll have far too much on what Charles is up to.

20viona · 15/09/2022 08:29

What a dramatic reaction it's been a week of coverage for something that's happened once in our lifetimes. You can switch over they won't miss you.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 15/09/2022 08:32

BBC will rake it in from selling coverage of the funeral to every other country in the world. Coronation next year, ditto. As long as this enables them to go on making The Archers, University Challenge, The Repair Shop and their stunning wildlife documentaries I'm fine with a few days of disruption.

Helgadaley · 15/09/2022 08:33

It was always going to be like this. It's one of the most momentous events in our lifetimes. Even if you're not a royalist, it's still history in the making. You're not forced to watch, there are plenty of other services.

Twilightimmortal · 15/09/2022 08:34

The death has been coming for a while.
Since they got rid of 1-5 with a aerial.

I dobt watch anything live anymore just on catch up, netflix, youtube.

Porcupineintherough · 15/09/2022 08:35

I doubt it will be "once in our lifetimes" @20viona , unless you are very confident that death is coming to you in the next few years. Charles is in his 70s, after all.

There's plenty of BBC content on IPlayer for those that want alternatives to the current content.

Faircastle · 15/09/2022 08:35

I have watched some of the week's events on catch-up (e.g. church services at St Paul's and St Giles' and the procession to Westminster Hall), mostly because I like sacred choral music, but even for those I avoid the BBC coverage because the constant commentary is distracting. These are occasions when silence is much more appropriate.

Although they aren't my cup of tea, some people would enjoy watching the retrospective documentaries.

I can't imagine that anyone is interested in watching endless voxpops with random members of the public.

Cornettoninja · 15/09/2022 08:42

I’ve dipped in and out if something captures my attention, I have been watching a lot of iPlayer though (have other services but that’s what’s had what I wanted to watch - the capture is bloody awesome).

but then I’m a fully functional adult capable of entertaining myself in other ways or seeking out different news sources.

If it bothers you that much maybe take the opportunity to consider your own self reliance skills. You don’t have to watch bbc channels or even the tv at all. You’ve clearly got the internet for a start.

BogRollBOGOF · 15/09/2022 09:02

I don't tend to put the TV on in the day but have dipped in and out in the past week to catch up/ watch things happening. Happening meaning parades, changes of situation, not watching crowds/ queues, endless filler and soundbites with The People then it repeating again.
It's a slight gain to the BBC from me. I've watched very little live TV since March 2020.

Featuredcreature · 15/09/2022 09:10

Tbh once you stop watching TV regularly it really hard to go back. I gave up sky and TV about 3 years ago and the only time I watch is when I visit my friend. Its just fucking awful. Really really hard not rant on about how shit it is, I bite my tongue though.

I don't even watch streaming box sets either tbh unless something takes my fancy. I usually just put something on twitch or YouTube as background noise. I will probably go round his to watch new rtd Dr who though, its not all bad Grin

felulageller · 15/09/2022 09:13

Yes I have a routine of watching BBC breakfast too.

I suppose there isn't any other news ATM though?

I switched to sky fir a bit yesterday and was pleasantly surprised that they were actually discussing how surprised some quarters were that KC3 seems to be popular in his new role. I'd like to see more reporting along those lines . Eg on the not paying Tax.

ReadyForPumpkins · 15/09/2022 09:15

We haven't watched BBC for at least 5 years now. Can't stand TV schedules at all. I put on the royal family channel on youtube for a few minutes after dinner for the kids. They want to know what's happening. That's all we can stomach.

Even going on UK holidays now we bring a tablet and cable to connect to their TV so we can watch Netflix or Disney+.

ReadyForPumpkins · 15/09/2022 09:16

To those who want to dip in, try YouTube. It's much better!

Featuredcreature · 15/09/2022 09:16

Is it even possible to be on the Internet and not find out the latest news? I stopped watching the news after the ridiculous pandemic shite, any kind of news that happens is shared throughout the Internet within 10 minutes it seems. Like it or not.

abovedecknotbelow · 15/09/2022 09:17

I gave up on BBC News about two weeks into the first lockdown.

ReadyForPumpkins · 15/09/2022 09:17

Specifically this. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCCvgLV2Ixb8KCemj-UtXZ-g

All short videos and available when you want it.

ReadyForPumpkins · 15/09/2022 09:18

@Featuredcreature Twitter is very good for the news. They often have links to videos too. Some of those videos are on YouTube. The royal family has a YouTube channel for the Queen's funeral which I have linked in a PP.
