The death of regular TV

Is it just us, or are the BBC going to really regret this wall to wall coverage of the mourning period.

Today we shall be watching "a queue".

No, we won't, we'll be watching streaming services. Bye-bye BBC, we won't be back.

I guess some people like it, some people don't. It has certainly made me think about dropping broadcast telly/Iplayer and saving the license fee, since I have started watching TV differently.

I dipped into the BBC news this morning and the bloke who is normally on the sofa was asking people if they were cold... outside, in a long queue. The concensus was yes, it's cold standing outside in a queue for 4 hours.

For those with alternative suggestions of how to spend my time, cheers... I do read, I also knit and do felting. Sometimes I also liked to watch the news... national, international and local. That last one has changed.

I think ‘regular’ tv has been dying off for a long time. I don’t think the BBC’s coverage of queues is a big factor in the longer term trends.

NellesVilla · 15/09/2022 11:38

‘The Queue’ or ‘The Queen’s Queue’, ‘Give us our Daily Queue’ or even ‘Give us a Queue’ could be an idea for a new reality TV show.
Nothing would surprise me tbh, and us Brits will watch anything.

@user1497787065 you probably are the only person unless you are a pensioner. The average age of a BBC one and two veiwer is over 60. Everyone at work only talks about streaming shows. I got netflix, amazon prime and disney+.

Wafflesnsniffles · 15/09/2022 12:07

Its "ten days of mourning" op - your routine/preferences have been altered for now. In a week or two things will return. Its the death of the queen not tv, not your life as you previously knew it.

BobbysGirly · 15/09/2022 12:08

I don’t understand why those who have little or no interest in the BBC coverage don’t just switch to another channel. Or turn off and do something else. Nobody is forced to watch it.

BonesOfWhatYouBelieve · 15/09/2022 12:30

Bbc 1 is currently showing Bargain Hunt and seems to have a normal schedule all day. Bbc 2 is showing a news special but from 13:00 has a normal schedule. Anyone who wants to watch Bargain Hunt, Pointless, or an episode of top of the pops from 1987 is able to do so. Those who wish to watch reporters standing by the queue are able to do that as well.
The radio this morning covered the queen but also other news as well.
It's not even all over the bbc, let alone all over everything.

This affects mainly elderly people who do not have streaming services and have poor mobility.

We hardly watch the BBC , haven't for years. News biased, soaps not interested, dramas too depressing. Streaming or reading my Go to now

Same

Saw a tweet which referred to the BBC as MournHub, which I enjoyed greatly.

I've not watched 'live' tv for about 8 years and I've certainly no intention of it now. The country has gone berserk. Cinemas screening the funeral but saying attendees are allowed a bottle of complimentary water each because NO SNACKS are allowed to be bought because apparently haribo is in some way offensive...mental. Just, mental.

Hyacinth2 · 15/09/2022 21:33

You might have a point OP -- but, who'd have thought millions would want to trail past a closed coffin.... perhaps many want to watch queues ...

Florenz · 15/09/2022 22:01

How many people just sit with the TV on anymore? People watch what they want to watch on a variety of devices, through whatever service the thing they want to watch is shown on. The BBC is no different to Netflix, Prime or Youtube. People might like to pretend it is, but it really isn't.

BonesOfWhatYouBelieve · 16/09/2022 07:19

The BBC1 and BBC2 schedules are mainly back to normal. Sometimes tv is disrupted by things you don't personally care about but that other people do - maybe some of these viewers also hate when Wimbledon, or the Olympics, or the men's football World Cup take over everything and regular programmes are moved/cancelled. Or maybe they love that.
I'm not watching much of the queen stuff, but the bbc can't please all of the people all of the time.

lemmein · 16/09/2022 07:56

I hardly ever watch live tv anyway tbh - and haven't at all this week. I find it baffling that people are queuing to view a coffin of a person they don't know - but what's even more baffling is people watching a livestream of people queuing to view a coffin of a person they don't know.

If they watch the live-stream on gogglebox that'll be even more weird- viewers, watching people on GB, watching a live stream of people queuing to view a coffin of a person they don't know 🤯

Yeh because people who are elderly or disabled do nothing but sit and watch BBC all day, everyday 🥴

This Morning is cancelled today. That won’t bother the elderly and disabled because they don’t watch ITV- ever! 😂

NovaDeltas · 16/09/2022 09:06

Regular TV died years ago. The only people watching it now are elderly folks who still use Facebook.

TartanSquares · 16/09/2022 09:10

You can cancel your Tv license if you don't watch live tv or use bbc iplayer.
