Anyone else who can’t go to see the Queen lying in state wish they could?

I’m in NI and the flights + a hotel would be far too expensive so I can’t unfortunately.

would have been nice to have gone and paid my respects though.

I would like to have paid my respects but am working daytime and I'm not sure if I went in the evening I would get in with say a 3-4 hour wait !

It's a shame the royal train wasn't used from Scotland to London as I think that would have given more people from all over country to pay their respects ?

I agree (although that wouldn't actually have helped me), the plane yesterday was meant to fly over mine but they changed course.

onwardandupwards · 14/09/2022 21:30

I'm currently in hospital with gall stones so cannot go, but wish I could

Nearly £500 for a two way trip from Belfast to London and some hotels in central London were quoting me about £600 for just one night. It put me off right away.

£600 for one night! Bastards.

Maybe Buckingham Palace would have lent me a room for the night!

nope. I don't think filing past an embalmed body in a coffin is in any way respectful.

Why not? It's what humans have done for millenia, and what happens is a lot of other countries.

Hmmph · 14/09/2022 21:41

You can watch it on BBC Parliament which has a live feed. It's genuinely lovely and moving to watch normal people filing passed and just stopping to bow their heads in complete silence.

Questionaboutjoboffer · 14/09/2022 21:22

Why not @godmum56 ? Genuinely interested. Why is the fact that she is embalmed significant?

I will try to explain how it seems to me. When the person has just died then IMO its understandable for the family to want to stay with them until the spirit has left....but once that has gone, the body is nothing, the person is gone. all that is left is to dispose of the mortal remains. You respect the person who has gone by remembering them, not by lugging their cast aside body around.

ThreeRingCircus · 14/09/2022 21:46

I would definitely love to but I have two young DDs and there's no way I could queue for hours with them so won't be able to unfortunately.

RoobarbandCustud · 14/09/2022 21:49

I've booked trains and a hotel (from the NW) but I won't be able to stand all that time in a queue, mild physical disability, but I'm not on any benefits, blue badges etc to evidence I'm entitled to use the accessible queue. Long queues even to lay flowers at Buck House.

ILoveMonday · 14/09/2022 21:51

I was thinking of going up. I thought going straight after work would be a good plan but then if it was longer than 4 hours I don't know what I'd do about the dog and I start work so early I don't think I could handle a late night.

mdh2020 · 14/09/2022 21:52

You don’t have to go there in person. Visit the BBC news website and there is a live feed from Westminster Hall so you can pay your respects.

lollipoprainbow · 14/09/2022 21:53

@mdh2020 not quite the same as being there though.

vipersnest1 · 14/09/2022 21:56

No, I don't wish I could visit.
I totally respect our Queen's contribution and service to all of us, but I don't want to be part of that.
If I lived nearer, maybe I would.

Toddlerteaplease · 14/09/2022 21:57

Yes. But train tickets are too expensive and I've already got plans. No way could I stand in the queue.

DSGR · 14/09/2022 21:58

Yes I’d love to but can’t due to life

SomethingFast · 14/09/2022 21:59

I would like to but am too far north, plus childcare and work. If I was in London I would do it in a heartbeat.

Hoolihan · 14/09/2022 22:01

I just find the whole thing bizarre almost beyond belief. What are people getting out of filing past a coffin? Times like these I feel like I don't understand the culture of my own country!

I don’t think I could stand in endless queues for hours on end but it is because she was our monarch for 70 years so this is a big event and many people admired her.

UnbearableLoss · 14/09/2022 22:06

Agreed @Hoolihan I find this whole thing quite morbid.

IHateWasps · 14/09/2022 22:10

It's genuinely lovely and moving to watch normal people filing passed and just stopping to bow their heads in complete silence.

I watched 5 minutes of it and it looked utterly soulless. It looked like the queue to get on the tube station escalators as everyone only gets about 2 seconds to shuffle past. I find it utterly baffling rather than lovely that so many want to queue to do this.

StirredNotShaken00 · 14/09/2022 22:12

I think it's one of those things you probably can't appreciate the atmosphere unless you are there.

I would like to go but I have a back issue and couldn't cope with standing in the queue for that long.

TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination · 14/09/2022 22:13

asblindasabat · 14/09/2022 21:07

Gosh I don’t think I could queue for 30 hours.

How on earth do those people sleep while queuing or do they just stay awake all night?

no sitting or sleeping as the Queue is continually moving.

unfortunately it's not moving fast enough for me. I could do sitting or walking, but I can't do shuffling along and certainly not for 10-30 hours.

I'm only an hour away by train (1.5 if you include drive to station) but no one else is interested in going & I really can't shuffle for that long anyway.

I do feel I want to be part if it though, part of history, not just watching it on the TV.

I admired her too (to a point!) but she's not here anymore! How is a few seconds looking at her coffin in any way meaningful or 'paying respects'? I mean obviously each to their own but I'm baffled by it.

OldTinHat · 14/09/2022 22:20

Yes.
