We’re a bit sick of the commentary here…..

I, my sons, my uncle and even my royal-obsessed mum are a bit weary of the endless time-filling interviews with random people and the endless repetitive footage of the Queen doing this that and the other.

I think the most impressive bit by far was the notice on the palace gates - commentary free, like the Queen!

by all means show the rituals, briefly explain particular ceremonies and wear black but this is exhausting. I’ve got commentary fatigue

@concernedrepurplehouse Thanks. I don't think anything really, he was only eight years old and he was my whole world.

All I know is I find being surrounded by death so overwhelming. Obviously this is my problem and no one else's, I just feel like I need things to be as light as possible right now for my mental health.

KnickerlessParsons · 12/09/2022 23:32

Never have I ever watched so much nothing on TV, and found it fascinating.
•Hours and hours of nothing happening outside the gate to Balmoral
•Hours and hours of cars driving along an otherwise empty dual carriageway
•Hours and hours of people standing vigil while other people shuffle past in the background
• etc

Good for you for attempting to take care of yourself music.

I can remember when Diana died - I expected it to be the main story on the news for a while, but no, all day every day for what seemed like forever. Worse then because we just had terrestrial TV - probably four channels then.

So, I knew it would be like this and people watching it are feeding it, of course, but not as much as the media who are spinning out a twenty minute update into a day of programming.

We've got another week of it yet, so best start filtering now. I have stopped checking news websites and do a lot of skimming on all social media. You do have to switch off to avoid it - take full advantage of the fact we have so many choices now.

TheLoupGarou · 12/09/2022 23:39

This is basically the raison d'etre for streaming services, isn't it?

Purplepurse · 13/09/2022 00:01

Thats a bit of a of a strange statement oilcity. It may not be a once in a lifetime event for your 14 year old daughter but there are quite a few of us a lot older than that! It may very well be a once in a lifetime experience for lots of us. I'm in my 60s and remember no other monach. I would like to outlive Charles but my guarantee of that is much less than your daughters!

I'm so so sorry for your loss.
I can only imagine how hard this wall to wall coverage and official mourning period is when you have suffered the worst kind of loss.
Sending you thoughts and virtual hugs

Blinky21 · 13/09/2022 00:14

It's not really a news event, it's not evolving, so the 24hr constant format doesn't work. Why can't they do updates on regular news bulletins and people can tune in if they want to. Meanwhile news that affects the majority and their day to day lives (like energy caps) is ignored. Its bonkers and will probably just create apathy and irritation. The following of the body in the hearse was mawkish

OilCity · 13/09/2022 04:14

@Purplepurse but the whole thing is strange hence the need for a thread asking if any one else is not needing unavoidable 24hour minutiae coverage.

And the wisdom of the teen holds true. the coverage has made much of 'only monarch we've ever known' to justify ten days of uncertainty and a small part of the population will only see one monarch change. Most of us will get two more changes in just the next two decades. In the sea of coverage no ones discussing whether these imposed conditions of ten days of cancellation and uncertainty are to be encouraged. Particularly since COVID has curtailed so much recently.
Hearing my rightwing, royalist medium business owner boss tied up in knots today about the bank holiday was hilarious. He was very keen for us to be wearing black, cancelling leisure activities and signalling respect via our flag and even closed blinds but the loss to Productivity on a Monday has got him all conflicted.

Wearefoooked22 · 13/09/2022 04:23

I miss normal news!.

Backofthenet20 · 13/09/2022 04:36

I live in the US and hate the local news channels. I typically listen to Sky news online. But the wall to wall coverage of the Queens death has driven me back to CNN. 24 hours of very little happening is going to get old very quickly for another week

aramox1 · 13/09/2022 04:37

Worth saying this to the bbc as it's been reported they have had fewer complaints than expected so far (compared to the Duke of Edinburgh 's death)

Speedweed · 13/09/2022 04:43

Agree the event doesn't suit rolling news - the bbc would have been better putting it on a separate channel, with very little commentary (maybe the odd relevant interview, but not just grabbing anyone in the crowd who seems like they can string a sentence together), so those who want to follow can do so. Like a PP said, slow tv.

Music - so sorry for your loss xxx

MarshaMelrose · 13/09/2022 05:12

I understand where you're coming from with inane interviews but there's 80 odd channels on freeview and there's catchup. If you're fed up with it, watch something else.

Zonder · 13/09/2022 05:24

TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination · 12/09/2022 22:59

I'm sorry you only have one channel, that's quite unusual these days.

This.

If only there were other options, like dozens of channels not showing it, or streaming services, or YouTube, or iPlayer.

Inexplicably we managed a whole evening last night without watching anything related to the Queen.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 13/09/2022 05:38

I don't disagree with you that the coverage or nothing much actually happening, continuously, is pointless. However, I rarely watch live TV, so am mostly on Netflix or Prime. Or catch up. And Bake Off starts tonight 😁 It is possible to avoid (I have).

User642986540 · 13/09/2022 06:15

Maybe boost Netflix for the next month, I'm sure they will be glad of the custom

User642986540 · 13/09/2022 06:23

Why are you watching it, its quite easy to just pick the bits you want to see, surely you didn't waste the whole of the weekend watching it, you must have had other stuff to do, I just watched it on Saturday morning.

Andromachehadabadday · 13/09/2022 06:32

There was loads of other TV on yesterday.

Dp was off work and didn’t watch any of it. The news right now, is including lots of other stories.

I know if mum was still alive she would love to wall to wall coverage, even if it’s just the gates, incase someone appeared.

I think it’s good there’s choice for everyone.

Easy enough to find entertainment elsewhere, but the rest of the world hasn't stopped Please let us have normal news.

User642986540 · 13/09/2022 06:38

The worldwide news channels have other news, so probably best to watch those, the only thing we are missing here that may not be on them is the cost of living crisis and that was getting a bit wearing

User642986540 · 13/09/2022 06:42

Even watching the funeral is probably more interesting than watching smug well paid TV presenters saying how hard it is to pay energy bills which is what it had come to constantly on the tv.

GeorgeA12 · 13/09/2022 06:55

The thread is going off topic. It's about the commentary which is utterly excruciating as they continue to bamble on, pause and slow down whilst they keep thinking of things to say.

They were constantly talking over a church service the other day, couldn't even hear the music. I counted a ten second pause yesterday and this was only because the Queen came out of the gates at Holyrood. Someone needs to tell the BBC.

wilddreams · 13/09/2022 06:56

It's because we are still in the official ten days of mourning. It is expected in this time that entertainment is suspended and entertainment is subdued. I suppose were much fewer tvs when the last monarch died, so endless coverage wasn't a problem! It isn't because they are obsessed, it's because it is what they have to do by protocol. They do the same on other countries when a leader dies.

SpoonyMcFace · 13/09/2022 07:00

I thought you could watch it without the commentary as a standard. I know I watched some of the Jubilee like that.

I had never really thought about people sitting and watching everything all day. I assumed pekoe would just dip in and out and watch what they were interested in or whatever is on when they have a minute.
