Lots of the supermarkets are closing on the 19th. Read this article for the full list www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-62879563

The same companies convenience stores and other assets are likely to remain open and some stores will close 10am-2pm only (when they'd suffer reduced to zero trading anyway) so I think it's more about PR than anything.

DP works within the sector at a higher level and all week they've been crunching the cost loss of this against waiting anxiously for competitors to state a firm public position on closures so they can copy it where possible for fear of looking bad.

There is no legal obligation for time and a half etc for those working and no option for those who have no interest in the funeral to work (and earn a day's wage) should they wish to. Most will be essentially losing/using a day's holiday whether they like it or not - and many don't.

Also did someone say it's getting like North Korea?!

the attempted thought control aspect enforced mourning aspect is exactly like N.Korea. Main difference is that we have internet access - thank fuck for Netflix, YouTube etc. The gushing over the top praise also puts one in kind of some kind of cult regime “one of the greatest leaders ever” (Truss) and “Britain is the great country it is today because of her”. (Truss)
… certainly a few similarities.

Yeah, I don't get it.
I've more sympathy with retail workers getting a day off than people in (some) public service roles though.
Transport, police and lots of hospitality workers will be working of course. I gather London hotels are at maximum capacity. The people really into public mourning don't seem to be too worried about their staff. I guess they'd better all take sandwiches and not expect to be able to eat out or buy food?

Most people take sandwiches and drink beccouse they don't want to loose their space.

The police and security from around the country that have been brought in to keep the large numbers safe are being put into a lot of the hotels hence the room shortage.. they don't use the full hotel service. Anticipated wait time to see the Queen laying in state is expected to be 30 hours becouse of the number of people wanting to pay their respects.

As long as they are getting paid as normal then good.
I know some people would prefer to be at work though.

Naicehamandfruitshoots · 13/09/2022 09:33

I work in hospitality in the city and have just been informed we will be staying open.
On a normal Monday we have zero customers and the owner believes that we’re going to be rushed off our feet, we won’t!

So as the schools will be closed I’ll now have to try and find childcare of some sort.

Dodie66 · 13/09/2022 09:33

I sent a message to Tesco and this is their reply

I'm sorry for the delay in getting back to you. We will not be fulfilling online orders on Monday 19th September. If you have a slot booked on that day, we will contact you to confirm the cancellation and would encourage you to re-book a slot for another day. I'm sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.

Just this moment had an email from the WWT to say as a mark of respect they're closing their sites on the 19th.
So anyone wanting to commune with nature but with family friendly facilities will be disappointed.
I just can't see how this honours the memory of the late Queen at all.

Go for a walk somewhere in the countryside. You don't need to go to a paid attraction to be at one with nature.

Wonnle · 12/09/2022 21:20

I doubt they would get all the checks done in time .
It's all becoming like North Korea this .
Not everyone gives a toss about it at all

Really North Korea ? right you are 🙄

Will the supermarket staff all get holiday pay for missed shifts on 19th?
Another 1-2% off GDP, I guess.

We have to use a day’s annual leave, which splits the crowd here a bit!

I know (probably what I will be doing part of the day... as it happens on holiday anyway on a boat on the Broads). I'm not thinking about me.

Seems like a good policy for turning some of those ambivalent towards the monarchy more towards republicanism. (Which personally I'd tend to regret). Wtf happens if you've already booked up your holiday days for the year? Lose one from next year? Lose pay?Confused

I'm astonished that anyone is surprised about the arrangements for HMQ's funeral.

We got a day off when Charles and Diana got married. People up in arms about the fact that it's a bank holiday when the longest serving monarch dies!

The level of national mourning has been talked about for years. By all means don't watch it but stop moaning about others being allowed a day off to do so.

Also did someone say it's getting like North Korea?! Confused

Exactly this. ^ The Monarch of the country who has ruled for 70 YEARS has died FFS. Of COURSE there's going to be a day off for her funeral! Some people are just unbelievable, and insensitive, and a bit obtuse. Going off on one because they can't pop out and get a loaf of bread on Monday, or look around the clothes, or look around a bloody stately home is pathetic. The people working THERE would like a day off too. Hmm Some people are so selfish!

And no-one has to have any 'enforced mourning' FFS @Wonnle

As some people have said, have you nothing else to do in your life except watching TV? Confused

And as for the 'it's like North Korea' comment. WTAF is wrong with you?! Hmm

Very happy to see by the way, that mumsnet is becoming much less anti-royal. The Anti-Royalists are being massively outnumbered now by Royalists, and people who aren't necessarily Royalists but who don't mind them, or are just indifferent.

Orchidflower1 · 13/09/2022 10:01

If you see my lovely @Oldrockingchair , I did not report the post because someone disagreed with me, I ( unlike yourself) understand that people can have a difference of opinion. I reported the post for likening the UK to North Korea, country where you ( whether you like it or not) would be FORCED to mourn. The poster I quoted was moaning because they had nothing to do on Monday.

Do read the whole of the quotes before responding with such unnecessary vitriol.

Orchidflower1 · 13/09/2022 10:02

@Wonnle and @Oldrockingchair ^^

mum2bee2022 · 13/09/2022 10:12

I wouldn’t be praising these supermarkets just yet. I bet my bottom dollar the staff will have to take the BH from their leave entitlement. Win for the supermarket in terms of PR without actually giving anything to the staff
