Lots of the supermarkets are closing on the 19th. Read this article for the full list www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-62879563

What about the ones who want to work to avoid this enforced mourning then

The can litter pick, do some weeding, beach clean. Im sure there are plenty of volunteering work that dint need checks.

WeAreTheHeroes · 13/09/2022 06:21

Oh FFS - if you're not interested in the funeral and won't be working there are plenty of other things you could do instead. Except shopping won't be one of them. And it's nothing like North Korea. What an insensitive, ill-imformed comment.

Thank you for saying this. The fact that the other poster has the liberty to post on a public forum and compare it to North Korea proves just how unlike North Korea the U.K. is.

Devilishpyjamas · 13/09/2022 06:53

Let’s hope those on zero hours contracts still get paid if they were due to work that day.

PrettyPrim · 13/09/2022 06:57

@Devilishpyjamas nope. Zero hours contract here so no salary on the 19th.

Prescottdanni123 · 13/09/2022 07:02

Glad to hear about it.

People have been given plenty of warning so they can't complain that they haven't been given enough time to buy essentials.

MistyRock · 13/09/2022 07:13

It's about time zero hour contracts were illegal.

They can watch a film, take a walk, rest.....what about the many who every bank holiday are forced to work who finally get a day to be with family? It's only enforced mourning if your fied to a chair to watch the thing.

Do you only work or watch TV, how weird, don't you have any other interests

Easy to avoid mourning. You can catch up on a few household jobs. Go for a walk and picnic. If you have a car and petrol money, a trip to the beach. Have like minded friends/family around for lunch. A hobby, read a book/magazine.

yay, that's commemorate the life of the woman who refused to stop working by people having a day off work. That makes sense. Sure. <shrug>

The Queen was part of the planning for her funeral for all her adult life. Plans were updated regularly by her and have always included a bank holiday to allow people... who in their thousands have already gone to lay flowers, stand by roads and attend services so will undoubtedly do so on the day....a period of respect. If she hadn't wanted her people to take a day to reflect she would have said no. If you don't want a day off go volunteer in a homeless centre serving food etc, clean the park or whatever. But don't moan the shops are shut

Yeah, I don't get it.
I've more sympathy with retail workers getting a day off than people in (some) public service roles though.
Transport, police and lots of hospitality workers will be working of course. I gather London hotels are at maximum capacity. The people really into public mourning don't seem to be too worried about their staff. I guess they'd better all take sandwiches and not expect to be able to eat out or buy food?

ErrolTheDragon · 13/09/2022 08:33

Just this moment had an email from the WWT to say as a mark of respect they're closing their sites on the 19th.
So anyone wanting to commune with nature but with family friendly facilities will be disappointed.
I just can't see how this honours the memory of the late Queen at all.

But opening-wouldn't that mean staff having to go in and work there? the staff that might want to mourn/watch the funeral? I assume the 'family friendly facilities' have to be manned?

Wonnle · 12/09/2022 21:20

I doubt they would get all the checks done in time .
It's all becoming like North Korea this .
Not everyone gives a toss about it at all

@Wonnle perhaps you could show an ounce of dignity and accept that most people do agree with it. Your post is low and inflammatory - reported.

Is this for real? Yes, North Korea.

SpoonsAndLoons · 13/09/2022 08:46

Lovely, I like an impromptu BH.

Roselilly36 · 13/09/2022 08:46

I think it’s a good thing to close supermarkets on the day of the funeral, plenty of other opportunities to shop, at any other time, people cope with other closures during the year, Xmas day, Easter Sunday, people know in advance to get organised. I am sure many of the staff would like to watch the service and those who don’t can spend the time how they wish too.

I expect the same will happen for the coronation, but that will be a while off yet, no way will another unplanned bank hol happen again this year, I wouldn’t have thought, too much impact on the economy.

Neverendingdust · 13/09/2022 08:47

Its good to see that many who wish to watch the funeral will have the opportunity to do so. Diddums to those whining about it but then again I suppose you can’t please everyone.

puffylovett · 13/09/2022 08:51

It’s not just zero hours staff who are affected, my husbands company has deducted a day of ‘normal’ annual leave for everyone next Monday. Rather than give an extra day. I guess they can get away with it because they give more annual leave than the nominal 21 days plus BHs.
fine for most, but those who aren’t supportive won’t be happy to not be given a choice over their remaining AL.

Oldrockingchair · 13/09/2022 08:52

@Orchidflower1 Wtf - reporting posts because someone doesn’t agree with you?? What is WRONG with you? I’m totally pissed off everything is closed - I’ll lose £200 wages as self employed. Wasn’t in my budget this month. All for a lady I have never met who died at 96. There are a lot of us out there who are really shafted by this, and also who don’t really give a shit. Our opinions are perfectly valid too, you know.

ErrolTheDragon · 13/09/2022 08:54

I'd have thought there would be enough people who'd be happy to take a different day off - to mourn or not - that this sort of place could open, maybe with reduced facilities. Maybe they can't, but it genuinely surprises me.

vera99 · 13/09/2022 08:59

£2,000,000,000 for a day off and a government that's been AWOL for the last two months and winter is coming - Long Live the King and His Majesties Government.

But the schools are shut. It's not just a case of being happy to take a different day off.

Surely this was one of the key lessons from Covid? If the schools are shut the a large proportion of the workforce can't go to work.

ErrolTheDragon · 13/09/2022 09:04

True. Must be a logistical nightmare for a lot of the emergency services, transport and hospitality staff who are probably having to work overtime to accommodate people flocking to London.

NashvilleQueen · 13/09/2022 09:07

I'm astonished that anyone is surprised about the arrangements for HMQ's funeral.

We got a day off when Charles and Diana got married. People up in arms about the fact that it's a bank holiday when the longest serving monarch dies!

The level of national mourning has been talked about for years. By all means don't watch it but stop moaning about others being allowed a day off to do so.

Also did someone say it's getting like North Korea?! Confused
