It's been a long time since I had such a list! From what I can recall, my "must haves" included:
Must be a non-smoker
Must love the countryside and not want to live in a city.
Must enjoy walking.
Must love children and want to be a dad one day.
Must be well educated.
Must have a good job or good prospects.
Must own and drive a car.
Must have a nice mum and dad and come from a nice family.
Must share my values.
Must not waste money.
Must be a kind person.
Must not be smelly!

My "ideally should be" list included:
Should be taller than me.
Should be older than me.
Should know how to do DIY around the house.
Should not want to watch football all the time.

Crikeyalmighty · 13/09/2022 16:24

A very complicated subject- my H of 26 years has all the 'haves' I would list - plus a ton of 'wouldn't haves' that have crept in over the years.

BecauseICan22 · 13/09/2022 16:24

Compassion
Intellect
Accountable for all previous decisions they've made, specifically if they have children already
Financially solvent
Ambitious
Sense of humour
Willing to learn and evolve
Great sex - was married for 20 years with mediocre sex, not willing to do that again.

For what it's worth, these are all things (and more) that I found in my DH who I met last year in May; online dating and we got married in March this year.
I didn't settle and he was worth the wait. I think second time around, most people don't settle and that's a good thing.

SaharaSahara · 13/09/2022 13:51

Generous - it’s a massive one
good natured
friendly and polite
just generally good manners, accepting and non judgemental

In the end it’s character that matters once all the other things have fizzled out

In what way generous?

RiftGibbon · 13/09/2022 19:16

Meant to include as essential: Honest

WildRosie · 14/09/2022 09:08

Do any of you ladies who have posted actually have in your life a man with more than half of these characteristics and/or attributes ? Or is this all pure fantasy ? In some ways I think I measure up but in others, I fall flat!

PermanentTemporary · 14/09/2022 10:30

@WildRosie I have a partner with all of the attributes I wanted, plus a lot more. The key is to find someone who likes what you have to offer!

PutinIsAWarCriminal · 14/09/2022 10:36

Kind, patient, funny, clever go without saying.
I wouldn't be with anyone who wasn't a debt free home owner with a decent pension and earning potential. I didn't work this hard for this long to support a man.

Yes, definitely, mine does. I do too, so we're even, it wouldn't work otherwise.

Fuzzy303 · 14/09/2022 10:44

makes me laugh
good work ethic
honest
cheeky geezer

waffless · 14/09/2022 10:59

I was thinking about a list but I am done with men so…

PipinwasAuntieMabelsdog · 14/09/2022 12:11
  1. Kind, tolerant, interested in the world
  2. Contributes to the world in positive ways
  3. Caring to people and animals
  4. Solvent, not profligate with money, but not miserly either
SteveHarringtonsChestHair · 14/09/2022 12:26

Makes me laugh and also finds me funny/interesting.

Not shallow (I’m plus size and won’t be with anyone who would judge me for that, or signs of ageing etc)

Prefer a hairy man although man I’m going on a first date with next week doesn’t appear to be hairy. If he’s a waxer I may have to talk him out of it!

Voice that makes me melt is a bonus.

Don’t mind about size etc, it’s more about how they make me feel. XP was overweight with a not massive penis but he totally made me weak at the knees.

SteveHarringtonsChestHair · 14/09/2022 12:28

That’s obviously all physical stuff. On the emotional/personality side I don’t want anyone extreme on either end of the safe re politics, covid, Brexit etc. I’m quite a moderate person and can see most things from both sides so don’t want anyone who is very left/right wing etc

Won’t date anyone with young kids again. Older teens/adults fine. But ideally no kids.

SteveHarringtonsChestHair · 14/09/2022 12:29

End of the scale - ffs phone!

Also won’t have anger issues, nasty swearing or any physical dominance in my home again.

OrlandointheWilderness · 14/09/2022 12:30

My DP is the embodiment of what I've posted! Every last point is him.
