My three year old has picked up some words and phrases from our builders....

I'm having an extension built. My son sits for hours watching the builders work. He's absolutely fascinated.

But it looks like I've let him watch them for too long without intervention. He's started to talk like a middle-aged builder.

Over the weekend, my brother visited and asked DS how he was. DS replied "Can't complain, you know how it is"

Later, we were eating tea and DS asked if he could have a Radox bath to "soak his aching bones"

I've just been told that when one of the nursery staff greeted my son this morning, he replied with "Alright geezer" and has been calling other kids at the nursery "mate" all morning.

The builders only started on Monday. They're likely to be hear for another six weeks. By the time they've finished, I think my DS will be carrying a quote book, a pencil behind his ear and doing that sucking-in-air noise that builders do before they hit you with a giant problem.

Obviously NC for this because its very outing.

Just read some of this out to DH who is a builder, made him laugh. Thank you!

My Godson when small would ask me with a sigh and a fold of his hands "how have you been?".

My DS was very fond of one of our teenage neighbors so much so he went trick and treating with them (with me trailing behind). He loved it when they called him mate.

My DS would also say things like "I just dont know" and "I havent got the strength".

Your son sounds delightful OP.

@Weighy You reminded me of when the house as the back of me had some scaffolding up and my son was a toddler. They were shouting to each other, was meant to be talking but obviously this one was so loud, all he was doing was f-ing and cursing. I got so annoyed I shouted out to them I had a young one and could they please use better words 😂 They were a lot quieter after

My favourite phrase I picked up from our builders was "on the wonk" except this is not a description you want to hear.
"this existing wall is seriously on the wonk"

During a long building convertion my then 3yo dgs was enraptured with the builders, one day they gave him a hi-vis jacket of his very own, he took it everywhere, it had to be draped on the headboard every night, carried to nursery etc, but he totally refused to wear it. We figured out that he just did not feel 'worthy' of such a great prize Grin

Whenever I do a project with small children in the house when it gets to the build stage I give them a hard hat of their own. I found out when I was getting my own printed with my logo it wasn't that much more to get a whole box of them done. I think it helps them feel like they are part of what's going on.

I still have fond memories of the builders letting me help them brew their tea when I was about 6 - with a whistling kettle on a primus stove and then stewed in a proper metal teapot. The foreman wore a bowler hat (this was before H&S was invented).

I love all the stories you're sharing, thank you. They can be so damn cute can't they!?

DS has been at home today watching supervising the builders closely. DS got a little bit bashful around the young lad who high-fived him yesterday when they first arrived. Its rare (DS is very outgoing!!) but he does that when he gets excited about something, gets a bit overwhelmed by the excitement and just goes to ground. So he was hiding behind me and staring at the young lad as they were setting up. With a bit of gentle encouragement, DS went and gave the lad a high-five which sent him into absolute hysterics (DS, not the builder). When I put him to bed tonight (again, DS, not the young builder), he was still talking about it and asking if the lad will be back tomorrow.

As we were eating tea tonight, DS asked if we could go to 'the merchants' tomorrow. I asked him what he thought 'the merchants' was. He had no idea but said it was 'maybe magic'. I told him, 'No, it's like a big shop where builders go to get wood and nails and tools and all the things they need to work on people's houses'. This, reader, did not dampen his enthusiasm. Quite the opposite actually. So, assuming he remembers (which he will because he's like a bloody savant about really mundane shit), looks like we're off to B&Q tomorrow.
