Do people think south London (Tooting) will be a nightmare this weekend?

Hello just wondering if any Londoners or knowledgeable people can help...

I'm meant to be moving my son into his halls of residence this weekend. We are travelling from quite far North and I'm not very familiar with London. Do people think all of greater London and the motorways are going to be snarled up with traffic? I'm planning to leave Friday around 12, hopefully arriving by 6pm and then leave Sunday mid morning.

I'm dreading it. I could probably delay it by a week but he would miss some Freshers stuff, plus it's like £200 a week so I want him to get his money's worth!!

Please someone tell me Tooting is far away enough to be relatively unaffected!
?!?!

Tooting will almost certainly not be affected by Royal things this coming weekend.

GalesThisMorning · 11/09/2022 18:50

Oops should say I guess I am referring to next weekend! I'm off to a good start with this thread 🙄

Tooting won’t be affected but don’t drive through central London. Go round the edges.

Digimoor · 11/09/2022 18:54

Just avoid central London and you should be fine

Westfacing · 11/09/2022 18:54

Anyone going by Tube would be affected because I imagine public transport will be heaving, but I can see you're driving!

titchy · 11/09/2022 19:00

Go round the M25 rather than through central London - it'll be fine. St G isn't large at all so there won't be masses of student traffic either.

pimlicoanna · 11/09/2022 19:02

Tooting will be normal

SquirmOfEels · 11/09/2022 19:13

Tooting itself should be fine, but agree with previous posters that huge amounts of central London is going to be cordoned off, and it's difficult to predict quite where it will all go. If you're coming from a direction that means you have to cross London, go as wide as you can - so even if you would normally use north/south circular, consider M25 instead.

Be aware that some residential bts of Tooting have local one-way systems (roads randomly blocked off with planters and odd, short one-way sections) to prevent rat running. So keep your eyes open when navigating the last bit!

Lots of shopping near Tooting Broadway tube station if you need to get him last minute supplies

OperaStation · 11/09/2022 19:27

Tooting is miles from the action. However, your timings on Friday mean you will be driving in the worst rush hour. Can’t you leave Friday early morning?

GalesThisMorning · 11/09/2022 20:00

Thanks for the reassurance everyone! I will be doing my utmost to avoid central London, it looks like I should be able to stay well clear. @OperaStation I can't leave any earlier than 12. The original plan was to go Saturday morning - Monday but Ive moved it forward thinking Monday would just be awful. Maybe I'm wrong in that?

Argh he just had to pick a London uni!!

Avoid central London and it should be ok.

Alternatively, would it be an option to send him with the basics on the train and drive down with the rest of his stuff the following weekend?

As far as I'm aware, Tooting isn't a hub of royal activity.

I would really like to! But even the basics includes bedding, dinner ware, his laptop etc and by that point I think it's better for me to just suck it up and drive.

I wouldn't worry about it - that is pretty far south on the edge of London.

catandcoffee · 11/09/2022 21:34

Tooting is always bloody busy with traffic. Its even worse since the 20 mile speed limit and narrow main roads.

OP I'd drive Saturday morning, early as possible, instead of Friday.

dmask · 11/09/2022 21:34

Where are you driving from? Tooting is pretty far out, so you’ll avoid anything royal related.

Jewel1968 · 11/09/2022 21:40

If it's the student halls I know they aren't in the busy part of Tooting. You should be fine.

GalesThisMorning · 11/09/2022 21:42

@Jewel1968 it's furzedown. They seem to be in a quiet part of town (for London I guess)

OP posts:
Jewel1968 · 11/09/2022 22:02

Yes, it's quiet. Tooting proper has a busy vibe most of the time but Furzedown very quiet.

bilbodog · 11/09/2022 22:38

I think you would find driving home on monday should be fine as well - anyone coming into london for the funeral will do so early and everyone else will be at home watching on TV so i think the roads will be empty for the most part.

I should think not
Victory to the people!
Freedom for Tooting!
