Is it safe to travel to London on my own?

what is everyone’s opinion on a lone female travelling from York to London on their own to see the Queen lying in state?

my partner and mum don’t think it’s safe which has me wondering

@namethisbird I traveled to London all by myself at the age of 22, found a shared flat, found a job, walked home from night buses, went to work on the day of the terror attack, been out to pubs, clubs, afterparties at near strangers houses.. Later as a mum took my kids on the tube, to the museums, Southbank etc etc.. London is fine. You have to LIVE! Don't let other peoples anxiety to limit your life experience

Some people are neurotic. My mother scalded me aged 38 for walking from my grandads house to mine five minutes away in a very suburban low crime area because it was darrrkkk and anything could happen

I really hope that's a spelling mistake or an autocorrect!

Womencanlift · 10/09/2022 23:21

Your mother and partner’s thoughts aside I think YABU to think you can come to London for the lying in state and expect to get a set train home.

To be honest anyone who expects to do it in a day without the contingency of a hotel booking is pushing it

I wouldn’t be surprised of queues that are hours long

workiskillingme · 10/09/2022 23:23

@saraclara autocorrect obvs

thing47 · 10/09/2022 23:25

My mother is a bit like this, @namethisbird. Lived all her life in tiny little hamlets in the middle of nowhere and is scared of cities – navigating them, crowds, crime etc. I just laugh it off and tell her it isn't Kyev. I certainly don't give it any credibility or headspace.

CallMeLinda · 10/09/2022 23:26

Of course it is! Especially since you plan on sticking to tourist London.

sunshineandsuddenshowers · 10/09/2022 23:28

I don’t think you can count on getting to the front of the queue though, in the daytime, w less than 12 hours to spare. I think it will be max.

MadKittenWoman · 10/09/2022 23:28

I recently drove to Northern Italy on my own. It took 2 1/2 days. Nothing bad happened.

anon666 · 10/09/2022 23:28

Lol. People (including women) come from all over the world to London on business trips. Alone.

When I was 16 I came down to London alone on a study week.

On the train.

It's just fear, no reason for it

saleorbouy · 10/09/2022 23:32

No women live in London because it too dangerous, don't go South of York.
Of course it's safe enough, just use common sense and plan your journey just like being anywhere else.

astorsback · 10/09/2022 23:39

No. Dont leave the village. There be dragons.

imsanehonest · 10/09/2022 23:42

I felt safer walking round London with my 2DCs than I do in my own NW city centre.

Branleuse · 10/09/2022 23:42

Why are they treating you like a baby?

Lalliella · 10/09/2022 23:44

No. Yorkists are not safe in London. They’ll have your head on a spike.

Polimolly · 10/09/2022 23:44

Of course it is. Millions of women walk around London every day. Girls take the tube to school. Young female students move to London to study. Your question is very odd! 🙂

PickAChew · 10/09/2022 23:45

Of course it's safe. Millions of women live quite safely in London.

BellaEllaWella · 10/09/2022 23:46

🙄

MsRosley · 10/09/2022 23:56

You've clearly led a very sheltered life, OP.

Itstrueiagree · 11/09/2022 00:07

Yes but be aware of pickpockets and distracting techniques. Don't travel back in the dark. This from someone who lives in London and has done all of my life.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 11/09/2022 00:10

Considering it gets dark at 8pm that's going to limit OP a bit.

You don’t go out in the dark?

Do you give up work in the winter then?

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 11/09/2022 00:21

OP - I have lived in London for 54 years.

Never been mugged
Never been pickpocketed
Have walked around after dark with no problem.

Either I have a distinct 'don't fuck with me, sunshine,' aura or London is less dangerous than some people would like you to believe. Why is your DM and DP so worried for you?

123rd · 11/09/2022 00:26

Can I just say ...Jesus Christ

namethisbird · 10/09/2022 22:01

Thanks All, it’s my mum more than anyone else she has been like this since I was a child.

I’m only going to queue to see the Queen lying in state then will be coming home on an 8pm train so I don’t get why she is making such a fuss.

You need to stop listening to your mother and work out how to live your own life, as it suits you. Easier said than done I imagine, but you have to try. Overbearing parents are a curse.

Bouledeneige · 11/09/2022 00:28

That's bonkers! At 21 I flew to the States on my own, crossed New York to catch another flight to Virginia. I did the trip several times there and back.

I've travelled in many countries on my own for weeks! And I frequently travel up and down England on my own and live in London.

Your family are off the wall nuts! Have you never been anywhere on your own before? What in earth have you been doing!
