Is it safe to travel to London on my own?

what is everyone’s opinion on a lone female travelling from York to London on their own to see the Queen lying in state?

my partner and mum don’t think it’s safe which has me wondering

OP posts:

Ah you'll be absolutely fine. Men, women and children travel to London all the time

just be prepared for the huge amount of people who will be thinking the same as you and travelling down. Plan your journey/stay with this in mind

@weebarra

I hadn't even considered a terrorist threat!

I suppose it could be said that covid has achieved one good thing!

@namethisbird what is their actual concern?

have you never been to London?

@namethisbird sorry cross posted with you

crowds - and??
muggers - least likely time with so much police about.
Terrorist attacks- as above.
men sensing I’m on my own - as are many many women in London. Unless you plan to go down a dark back ally with one, so what?

yell them you're a grown woman, not an 8 year old and to stop being so bloody ridiculous!!

BareGrylls · 10/09/2022 21:29

It's easy to mock when you live in London or any big city.

I live in a tiny village and going to London is a big deal. I hate it actually but have to go occasionally.

I didn't go or take DC there for many years after the 7/7 bombings.

Jjones8 · 10/09/2022 21:30

What specifically is not safe? Unless you are a child or particularly vulnerable, it is safe.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 10/09/2022 21:31

Blow your mother's mind, OP. Tell her I've walked through Soho at 1am in the morning - unaccompanied, shock horror - and felt perfectly safe because of all the people around me.

Be a bit streetwise, have your phone fully charged and bag securely zipped. Resist their efforts to make your life small and narrow.

Dogsgottabone · 10/09/2022 21:31

My DD14 is going for the first time on her own in a few weeks. Because she is quite capable of navigating a train, a tube and a walk to the theatre with her friend!

I lived in London alone for several years in my early 20s and then more years with now DH.

I have walked the streets at night, been drunk, run down canals, power walked down city streets and never saw a single dangerous thing!

If someone offers you drugs (seven sisters tube) or sex (Spitalfields in the early 2000s near the warehouses) , say 'no thank you' !!

Frazzled2207 · 10/09/2022 21:32

It’s totally fine.

VerifiedBot2351 · 10/09/2022 21:32

Really?

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 10/09/2022 21:32

If you are going for the lying in state you need to realise that the queues will be several miles long.

benning · 10/09/2022 21:33

I live rurally but still, this is the weirdest question I’ve seen on MN.

Snowiscold · 10/09/2022 21:34

My young teenage DC would travel from York to London by themselves and then get around once there.

BabbleBee · 10/09/2022 21:35

I’ve been to lay flowers today and didn’t once feel unsafe. Well, other than the mosh pit that is the crowds around Buckingham Palace pushing, shoving and being impatient… other than that it wasn’t a problem.

SianNotAMan · 10/09/2022 21:36

Avoid wearing a dress made of meat while climbing into the tiger enclosure on the zoo.

Do not urinate onto the live rail on the underground from the platform.

Libertyqueen · 10/09/2022 21:36

Yes. Of course it’s safe.

Lampan · 10/09/2022 21:37

Assuming this is real, seriously if your mum is so worried about you going to London, how would she feel if you wanted to, say, travel abroad alone? Don’t let her anxieties prevent you from living a life you want to.

Suprima · 10/09/2022 21:37

I actually found this post super sad.

your mum and partner are anxious and controlling to think a mainline journey to london is too dangerous for you.

Taking heed of anything they say will lead to a life half lived.

what else have you said no to, or not considered doing ever?

Lindy2 · 10/09/2022 21:38

You'll be as safe as you are anyehere. In fact you'll probably be safer in London than anywhere else at the moment due to the amount of Police there right now.

If you want to go then do it. Don't let them hold you back unnecessarily.

SavingsThreads · 10/09/2022 21:38

Single woman living in London, 🙋🏼‍♀️ never had an ounce of trouble!

Zosime · 10/09/2022 21:38

Another one saying it will be fine.

OP, the main thing to guard against is pickpockets and the like, if you get in a crowded area. Wear a cross-body bag, keep it in front of you, make sure it's zipped and everything vauable is pushed to the bottom. And keep it on your lap if you're in a cafe.

And if you're on the Tube, stand on the right on the escalator!

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 10/09/2022 21:39

I don't know how to ask this politely, are they both a bit backward? How can theyn know that in 2022 women travel the globe everyday on their own?

BobaTeaPoops · 10/09/2022 21:41

Um it's fine?

LOTS of women travel to London alone 5 days a week.

I've also travelled to Paris, New York, LA, Dubai etc etc without the help of a man.....

TokyoTen · 10/09/2022 21:44

Yes its fine. I go into London Waterloo and on to the City 3 to 5 days a week.

DeclansAFeckingDream · 10/09/2022 21:45

OP don't you go anywhere outside York?

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 10/09/2022 21:47

Do not urinate onto the live rail on the underground from the platform.

And if you use the tube do not speak to people if you want to get out alive.

At least read OP's post/s before you completely unreasonably call her an idiot. It's not her who's worried, it's her mother and partner.
