There was a chap at the 2nd proclamation today wearing such an outfit.
My dad, a history buff, is stumped and won't be able to sleep tonight give it now transpires he doesn't know EVERYTHING!
Is it a religious leader? Or some sort of court judge?
Can anyone help him?
Thanks

@BoreOfWhabylon the chap in the furry Muscovy hat was the Sword Bearer, one of the City's ceremonial officers. Apparently the hat honoured the City's trade with the Baltic in medieval times. (Was Googling earlier.)

Marynotsocontrary · 10/09/2022 22:04

Definitely no wife on here!
RC monsignor as pps have said. Bishops wear similar, but with the addition of a skull cap and cross.

BoreOfWhabylon · 10/09/2022 22:31

Thank you @Cockerdileteeth!

BoreOfWhabylon · 10/09/2022 22:34

Couldn't help noticing that all the ceremonial outfits of the hearalds etc. are emblazoned with "ER"

There's going to be an awful lot of corrective embroidery needed.

Toddlerteaplease · 10/09/2022 22:37

It's Mgr Jim Curry, the chaplain to the Mayor of London. And PP of our lady of Victories Kensington. I was puzzled, but I handily know an RC bishop so asked him.

Toddlerteaplease · 10/09/2022 22:38

I originally thought it was the Dean of St Paul's. I was very surprised that a Catholic would be in the procession.

picklemewalnuts · 11/09/2022 08:09

He's a local dignitary though. He's still the King's subject.

PatChaunceysFruitCake · 11/09/2022 08:23

It's confusing because he isn't wearing a mitre which would be the obvious way to spot a bishop...

PatChaunceysFruitCake · 11/09/2022 08:24

@Toddlerteaplease, that makes of the lack of mitre.

makingmiracles · 11/09/2022 08:30

A member of the clergy? I grew up within the church and I know when there is a death purple is the colour of the robes or over garment they wear and purple would be the colour the alter would be dressed in.

Toddlerteaplease · 11/09/2022 08:33

There are different levels of Monsignor, I don't know about the lower levels. But the highest level; Pro Notary Apostolic does dress like a bishop. But with out the pectoral cross and mitre. And wears a black Ferilola. A bishop would wear a purple one. But they rarely wear them anyway.

bornonvalentines · 11/09/2022 08:36

The Lord Mayor this year is a Catholic. Thus he has a Catholic chaplain. If he were a CofE Mayor, the chaplain would be CofE. So that's why there's a Catholic in the procession.

SpinCityBlues · 11/09/2022 08:43

All Lord Mayors round the country appoint their own chaplains or a rabbi or imam or alternative.

The default for a raging atheist LM is usually a C of E chaplain as the Lord Mayor takes an oath to HM the monarch.

Wow. The knowledge some mumsnetters possess.😀

Toddlerteaplease · 11/09/2022 08:48

When my diocese was Sede-vacant. (Without a bishop, as ours had been promoted) it was the Pro Notary that was in charge.

Haybo26 · 11/09/2022 08:53

Bishop - the purple sash represents sorrow and suffering.

Novum · 11/09/2022 09:13

DoAllMyOwnStunts · 10/09/2022 21:26

Thanks for all this info, I knew you wouldn't let me down!
Assuming he is indeed Catholic, then I am further intruiged - what is his role, esp as the Proclamation stuff said about upholding the Protestant religion?

That was in the bit about Scotland

WeAreTheHeroes · 11/09/2022 09:25

What is a Ferilola? I've tried googling, but can't find it.

Marynotsocontrary · 11/09/2022 10:52

It's a Ferraiolo @WeAreTheHeroes, and like a cape.
The person pictured isn't a bishop, but if he were I don't think he'd be wearing a mitre for this occasion anyway, but a zucchetto (skull cap) instead.

WeAreTheHeroes · 11/09/2022 10:55

Thank you @Marynotsocontrary - it was misspelled by the pp so not surprising I couldn't find it.

Toddlerteaplease · 11/09/2022 12:34

@Marynotsocontrary is the black cape. Bishops have purple ones and cardinals red. They are very rarely worn these days. Not to be confused with a Cappa Magna, which is a a cloak so long that it stretches to the next post code. And only worn by a bishop when saying an 'Old rite' Mass. And even then very rarely.

Toddlerteaplease · 11/09/2022 12:36

Turns out that I can't spell it. It's a ferraiolo

Bore that’s EXACTLY what I thought. Some people are going to be very busy. I wonder who does it.

Toddlerteaplease · 11/09/2022 12:42

I thought the same thing about the embroidery. I wonder if he'll keep the same Royal standard that hangs above is stall in St George's Chapel, the Queen kept the one made for her father.

TheHideAndSeekingHill · 11/09/2022 12:44

While we’re here, does anyone know who this chap in the big furry hat is? Far left
