When the lady announced the Queen has died, felt quite emotional. I think that’s the official announcement.

it was lovely to see William guide Camilla as she entered the room.

I found it fascinating do they elect members to do these ceremonies or are they chosen ? Oh I was using subtitles and the typist had Queen then had to delete and type King on the national anthem !

I've had the subtitles on and there have been some corkers. 'As we mourn hair loss ...' ('her loss'). 'My heart is tooth fall' (too full).

Obviously a difficult job and I certainly couldn't do better but the typos are very amusing.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 10/09/2022 12:51

Definitely interesting to hear how the language is so focused in ensuring that the rightful heir is accepted by everyone to demonstrate seamless transition of power and stability. All about making it clear to other nations and internal usurpers that it isn't the opportune moment to attack it might seem to be!

Isn't it? mechanisms put in place by the dynasty to ensure a seemless transition from one monarch to another so no-one minded to launch an alternative claim could have an excuse to say hoi, it should be me. Everything there - the upholding of the Protestant faith, the mention of the previous monarch and even stating that the previous monarch was the new king's mother so there's no doubt of his right to the throne. All bases covered. Royalty isn't stupid, whatever a lot of people think.

howaboutchocolate · 10/09/2022 12:51

I thought it was really fascinating. Mostly seeing all the old prime ministers chatting to each other.

I did think William had a look of someone who just realised that he isn't looking forward to the day he has to do it, and that he doesn't want this for his son, either.

I found it absolutely fascinating and very moving. I love history so loved watching what has been done for hundreds of years being televised for the first time ever.

And yes I felt that for William it must have been a bit jarring to think he will have to do the same when his father passes.

It's really the first time it has been possible to televise it properly I guess. The last coronation was televised but it was still in its infancy then. I remember my mum saying they got a TV for it especially and were all crowded round the tiny screen.

nowadays it is so easy to stream it live all around the world. Such a big change!

Toddlerteaplease · 10/09/2022 12:58

I was thinking how horrific that must have been for the Queen, at the age of 25. Her fathers death was a huge shock, and she adored him. And she'd just rushed back from the other side if the world.

Bit of a mess up with the positioning of the ink pot and pens! They needed a bigger table

Yes. I thought one of them Ed going to get spilt!

MinglingFlamingo · 10/09/2022 13:03

I haven't seen someone use a dippy ink fountain pen for years. My mum used to write with one.

Toddlerteaplease · 10/09/2022 13:05

Was it actually a dip pen? I thought they were fountain pens and the inkwells were for show. I did wonder if the pens would be wiped in between users!

SoupDragon · 10/09/2022 13:06

Charles definitely used a dip pen. I noticed it - he dipped it and tapped it on the side of the ink well.

Riverlee · 10/09/2022 14:40

Do you know why they have gun salutes? According to dh, it’s because we didn’t have social media etc in the past, so the gun salutes effectively announced to the world the news.

Fascinating how much there has to be done to install (?) a new monarch. I wonder how much of it was prepared long ago, just waiting for e.g., the dates to be added. Otherwise it's a lot of work to get it all perfect in just a couple of days!

I thought Penny Mordaunt did a good job. That probably was very emotional to say, to be the one to make the official declaration.

She's probably had a extra tough week.

I loved it, history happening before our eyes. I would like to know who all the unfamiliar people were- mostly older men, were they lords? I'd love to know what job they do/did, where they live etc. Fascinating!

I read on twitter that the garter king of arms, who read the proclamation from the balcony, enjoys a yearly salary of £49.07- unchanged since the 1830s!

MarshaBradyo · 10/09/2022 15:10

I haven’t had a chance to watch but have heard bits of it on radio

It’s quite something to witness historical moment, it’s strengthened my appreciation in being part of a constitutional monarchy, which has wavered at times wrt relevance

Rainbowqueeen · 10/09/2022 15:20

I want to know why it has always been at St James palace. If they use the throne room for anything else? I’ve been trying to think of things but most things are at Buckingham palace aren’t they?

Also if William was there as the heir, what happened when the Queen ascended the throne? Charles was only a child so did they appoint someone to represent him or just skip that bit?

spanieleyes · 10/09/2022 15:40

William was there as a privy councillor, Charles wasn't one when Elizabeth was proclaimed!

Hbh17 · 10/09/2022 15:43

The whole thing was fascinating. I'm so pleased that The King agreed it should be televised.

Hbh17 · 10/09/2022 15:46

St James's Palace is the traditional seat of the monarchy. Ambassadors are still appointed to the Court of St James. It is only since Queen Victoria's accession in 1837 that the monarch's official residence has been Buckingham Palace - in historical terms, that's about 10 minutes ago!

ApolloandDaphne · 10/09/2022 15:53

As I was watching all the women involved I wondered if they had to call up their local John Lewis and ask them to send round all the black dresses in their size. At least men get away with the same suit and black tie and just change their shirt!

I wonder how many suitable black dresses MPs have. I don't think on have any solidly black dresses. Liz Truss and Angela Rayner was wearing a different from the one yesterday

It will have been a respeaker (I'm one, but the above wasn't me!)
We do our very best, but errors like the above do happen.

Oh, yes, you do a great job and the little typos/mistranscriptions are very entertaining.

So as re-speaker, do you repeat things into a microphone when they are indistinct? How interesting, I had no idea there were re-speakers.

I never thought about the problem of seals etc being the Queens and that they need to be authorised to use them until new ones are made.
I'm finding the history fascinating.

I'm surprised they didn't have new seals ready - everything else about the event was planned years ago.
Also the cipher on the uniforms - I'm surprised there were none with CR already made and available.
