Why is there so much stuff on Vinted which is BNWT?

Just that really. Are so many people really buying clothes and literally never wearing them? It's not just nice occasion dresses that may have been worn once with the tag kept in and then sold, it's lots of everyday clothes, stuff in full packaging etc that have clearly genuinely never been worn. I don't really understand it.

On Facebook marketplace I always assume there is a chance it’s stolen.

Sometimes people live a long way from the shops so it doesn’t make financial sense to return it.

Sometimes people buy something hoping to fit into it after they've lost weight, but eventually realise they wouldn't wear it anymore.

Oh wow, so people could be shoplifting in order to sell online??

I usually assume it’s been shoplifted.

delilahhey · 10/09/2022 07:57

I have loads of BNWT things. Usually it’s because I thought I suited it or would lose weight then never do. Sometimes I forget to return.

For example, I have a wedding dress from asos listed BNWT. Thought I’d wear it in the evening, found a dress I preferred. Too much time passed… now it’s on Vinted.

MoltenLasagne · 10/09/2022 07:57

I've ordered things and then been too disorganised to send it back in time so tried to recoup some of the loss by selling on vinted. I'd be suspicious if there were lots of BNWT for one seller though.

Fair enough, I hadn't thought of that. That could explain some of it, although not the completely practical everyday bras still in their boxes etc.

I have sold a lot of bnwt on vinted and i am not a thief 😆I am however someone who shops online a lot, and then either forgets or cba to return things that I don't like!

BruisedSkies · 10/09/2022 07:58

I reckon it’s that lots of people buy a lot of shit they don’t really want. Just mindless buying. And then sell it when they realise. I don’t like the way some vinted photos are so porny. Really puts me off. All tiny tops and doing that weird pose where you lean forwards and put your bum out.

Yamaya · 10/09/2022 07:59

I have accidentally done this before though if I miss the time to return it or. Maybe I'm not sure about something... Think I might wear it eventually and then decide I won't and sell it.

BigDayToday · 10/09/2022 08:00

Loads of reasons. I have seen house clearances with hundreds of BNWT clothes - some people buy clothes with the idea of wearing them 'later' and then never do. Some see clothes shopping as a hobby. Some forget to return stuff. Etc.

Catslovepies · 10/09/2022 08:00

I think mostly things that are bought but never worn. One reason is there are a lot of people out there addicted to shopping - I think it's a bigger problem than we realise as it gets laughed off unlike say gambling addiction. And there are many who don't quite reach that level but just buy more than they can wear. Or there are those that buy something, usually online, that isn't quite right for them, keep it thinking they'll wear it and then never do.

Some things probably are stolen though. I noticed one seller with lots of bnwt jewelry items from a certain high street shop for example- this seems pretty suspicious to me. I also wonder about beauty product sellers - some of from advent calendars or unwanted gifts but I bet some are stolen. I suspect the small, easy to nab items the most!

Sometimes things get forgotten about in the back of the wardrobe. I recently sold some school clothes BNWT because I live too far from the shop to return them, much easier for me to sell on. My mum has loads of BNWT in her wardrobe because she intends to diet into things that catch her eye but sometimes it doesn’t happen 😂

If someone is selling multiple sizes of the same thing/shop then it’s probably stolen, they’ll go in and swipe things into a bag or coat. If it’s different items from different. shops people are less likely to have nicked them.

With kids clothes it's often they've been given something that they won't wear so it just been left hung in the wardrobe rather than offend the person gifting it.

NoodleSnow · 10/09/2022 08:02

If I have stuff with tags on, it’s usually because it’s something I added to an online order in a sale, but when it turned up the shape, fabric, colour or fit was a bit weird on me. It’s often too cheap to be worth returning and I imagine for a while that I’ll work out a way to fix it, but never get around to it, so it sits in the wardrobe judging me.

Plus people buy 'job lots' from wholesalers to sell online.

I just donated some clothes to a local charity shop because I hadn't returned them in time. I could have sold them on vinted, but didn't want the hassle.

I'm no thief thanks

DuneFan · 10/09/2022 08:04

Kids outgrown before wearing for me mainly

I find the bnwt stuff sells best so when I joined vinted I looked out and sold all the stuff I'd bought for the imaginary me not the real one, who is v thin and spends lots of time in trendy bars. I probably did look like a shoplifter!

Or as I said above they buy things sold off in bulk to resell.

RubertRoo · 10/09/2022 08:08

I just buy far too many clothes. It's mainly my daughters clothes that i sell BNWT because I buy them and then she decides she hates them and won't wear them but I keep them incase she changes her mind but then she grows out of it and it just sits in her wardrobe until i sell it on again!

EllietheElephanti · 10/09/2022 08:08

Years ago I would have bought things without thinking too much whether I would wear it (or thought I would) and then really did have loads of stuff new with tags that I had to get rid of. Sometimes it can happen if you miss the time to return something.

some set ups do seem dodgy. The other day I was looking for some shoes and someone had them available in every size BNWT. I asked why she had so many (as he bio said something about having a clear out at home) but she didn't answer that. So I didn't buy.

IMustMakeAmends · 10/09/2022 08:08

There's multiple reasons for having BNWT stuff

  • given things as a gift and not to taste/didn't get round to wearing (especially for children's stuff)
  • bought on Vinted/eBay BNWT and can't be returned
  • bought for an event and preferred something else in the end
  • bought for when you've lost weight/toned up etc and didn't happen
  • didn't fit and haven't returned in time

The last one is a big one - my mum, sister and a close friend are terrible for returning stuff. They just DON'T do it. 🤷‍♀️ They have masses of unworn stuff that doesn't fit them.

I'm currently selling a few BNWT stuff, a mix of the above reasons. One really expensive dress I bought before I knew I was pregnant. Now I've had my 3rd c section I know that dress is never going back on my body 😂

It's pretty unlikely to have been nicked!

HopingNotCoping · 10/09/2022 08:14

Some people buy stuff when it's reduced for clearance (at say 90% off) hold on to it for a bit then resale on vinted/eBay.
