Why is there so much stuff on Vinted which is BNWT?

Just that really. Are so many people really buying clothes and literally never wearing them? It's not just nice occasion dresses that may have been worn once with the tag kept in and then sold, it's lots of everyday clothes, stuff in full packaging etc that have clearly genuinely never been worn. I don't really understand it.

If you work full time somewhere that’s not near shops it is really fucking difficult to return stuff! I am never in town when the post office is open and those little shops you can also use aren’t on any of my routes and are hard to park near…it’s just a massive hassle for me and I never get around to it. I don’t buy much online for this reason.

wejammin · 10/09/2022 10:32

Slightly off thread but is everyone only using vinted nowaday, or is eBay still popular?

A symptom of mass overconsumption, endless fast fashion hauls, just buying shit you don’t need and it not even seeming worth your while to return it.

I read an article a while ago about charity shops being chock full of clothes from places like Shein/PLT/Nasty Gal all new with tags or barely worn.

PLT donate a small percentage of stock directly to charity, these will all be new with tags which might partly explain why some charity shops seem to be full of these items. I'm guessing others brands do the same.

I'm with you on finding mass overconsumption of clothes depressing though.

Some of it will also be retail staff buying things with their discount and then selling them on.

A friend used to work at Burberry and got a huge discount so would buy bags, shoes etc and sell them on via eBay and turn a small profit.

KateBushyTail · 10/09/2022 10:38

Why are you asking this about Vinted and not charity shops?

sagalooshoe · 10/09/2022 10:42

I have about 30 items of clothing I've bought online over the years that didn't fit and I didn't send back in time - including 15 Topshop dresses from when they closed down and i couldn't return. I should list them but I haven't got round to that either 😕I hope people dont think I've stolen them when I finally get round to listing them!

I wasn't aware this was common in charity shops too. I only have one local charity shop and it's full of stuff that's clearly been worn and is properly second hand.

Have you never bought something in a sane OP because it's a bargain, then realised your mistake when you get home?

Honestly, hardly ever. I don't think I've ever bought something and literally never worn it. (Although I've bought stuff for the kids they've refused to wear 😬 ) But I guess I'm more unusual in this than I realised.

Agree with lots of reasons.

I think with vinted moat things have actually been worn.

Perhaps people buy sale things and put then on for more, easy to forget you had an item lots of reasons.

BigDayToday · 10/09/2022 13:09

It's also worth noting that a lot of people exaggerate/lie about condition - they list as New Without Tags and add 'worn twice' or similar in the details.

AlwaysGinPlease · 12/09/2022 13:39

@BigDayToday true.

I have been lucky until today. I just got a parcel of three items that is not as described at all! Brand is different, sizes are different and one hasn't even got the bloody tags on as described and is bobbled! I'll just raise a dispute but why even try it. So annoying!

HouseOfGuineas · 12/09/2022 13:43

I have a large family and my DD is the only grand-daughter. She is bought a ridiculous amount of stuff that very rarely comes with receipts from old-skool grand parents work don’t think to do that as they buy stuff as they see then send in parcels. We can’t keep it all and some isn’t to taste.

I also have form for buying stuff thinking I’ll wear or fit into that for or an event coming up, then either lose the receipt or it’s too long
ago.

I have never shop lifted in my life thank you very much.

Eileen101 · 12/09/2022 14:29

Reasons I have BNWT stuff for sale on vinted:

  1. Strong willed 2.5 year old has decided that she absolutely will not wear the adorable dungarees I brought, because it's not pink.
  2. Someone brought DD a lovely summer dress of a chiffony fabric recently. It won't fit her next summer and even with vest, tights and cardigan, it won't be suitable for winter because of the fabric type.
  3. Because she has too many 'best' clothes that I couldn't possibly put her in for nursery, where she spends 4 days of each week.
  4. DS would rather live in brightly coloured joggers, not the many pairs of "too buttony" navy skinny jeans that he seems to get for gifts.

Given the above, if I know they're not going to get worn, I'll sell them on BNWT to maximise chances of a sale.

Definitely no shoplifting here thanks. I would be suspicious if someone had the same things in many sizes though, but one offs, no.

ShesThunderstorms · 16/09/2022 10:42

Most of my BNWT things are kids things that haven't been something I've liked that they've been gifted and I've kept for an appropriate amount of time so that everyone has forgotten about them and then I've sold on!

Ticksallboxes · 16/09/2022 10:47

I still don't get it.

Companies make it SO simple to return stuff that surely it's easier to do that than list it on a website, then have to get you're own packaging sorted out etc.

longtompot · 16/09/2022 11:07

SevenSistersStar · 10/09/2022 07:58

Fair enough, I hadn't thought of that. That could explain some of it, although not the completely practical everyday bras still in their boxes etc.

I bought some bras from Sainsburys during lockdown & they weren't accepting returns for a long time, 6 months or something like that. I forgot about them and just added them to a charity bag (they were only £8 for the two) Maybe that's why there are some for sale on there still in boxes?

Catsandcatsallover · 16/09/2022 11:23

I sell on Vinted and most of my stuff is New with tags or used once.
I am shopaholic so I buy and miss the refund date or just forgot about it.
Also it happened that I bought same items twice or even 3x as I just forgot I already have them deeply in my wardrobe.
Just few days ago I digged out from bottom of my wardrobe brand new H&M jumper I bought last winter, still with tags attached, I was actually shocked - as I honestly thought I returned it on time!
It’s now on Vinted as not keen on it now.

@Ticksallboxes

I still don't get it.

Companies make it SO simple to return stuff that surely it's easier to do that than list it on a website, then have to get you're own packaging sorted out etc.

I’ll explain with an example >

GPs bought something for DD she won’t wear. No receipt sent with present but still have full labels etc. Went to M&S and they WILL NOT exchange it. Scanning the label shows where and when it was bought. Their policy is 3 weeks on sale items. I wasn’t asking for a refund and only wanted to exchange for school uniform and they refused.

So no, companies don’t make it SO simple to return or exchange items.

BakeOffIsBack · 16/09/2022 12:55

Actually just checked M&S policy online and it’s even less than what the sales person told me:

Returns policy

• Our standard policy is 35 days from purchase
• Applies to online and in-store purchases
• Sale items are 14 days from purchase
