Is there a word for people like this?

People who act and speak like everything you do is crap, but they will go off and do the exact same thing and act like it’s amazing?

When you go somewhere on holiday it’s a rubbish place etc but then they go there and labour on about it?

I know people say it’s bitterness and jealousy and so on; but is there a specific name for this behaviour?

Insecure and jealous?

FrankTheThunderbird · 09/09/2022 16:42

Sounds like my brother. I tend to call him a twat. Wink

Insecure and jealous?

I get that and they are - but more like one word (just examples, these aren’t the same)

pedant
misogynist
mercenary
narcissist
introvert
sociopath

a definitive name you can you use that encompasses all that behaviour.

There might be in German.

Ha!!!!!

and they definitely are but I just cannot understand why. I’ve tried so hard with these people and they hate my existence (but covet it for hints and tips)

Hypocrisy?

Yup, there's a word for every occasion in German! 😂😂

Hypocrisy?

Oh now yes, this is probably close.

People who act and speak like everything you do is crap.

So the person is smug, judgemental, critical, arrogant...

but they will go off and do the exact same thing and act like it’s amazing?

So... superiority, grandiosity, one-upmanship?

i wanted to find a single word for you but I can't think of any one word!

I'm going for a walk, if I think of any I will let you know...

(I know someone like this!)

Delusional Jealousy Disorder

Calphurnia88 · 09/09/2022 17:23

Why does it need to be one word?

Anyway, it's hypocritical and annoying. If it were a friend or family member I would have to call it out if it happened all the time. 'Ah that's interesting you had such a good time in <insert place name>, Susan. When we went last summer you said it was rubbish. Why was that again?'

Irridescantshimmmer · 09/09/2022 17:30

Hypocracy

SisterAgatha · 09/09/2022 17:31

I often do call it out. it’s an entire family and the way they raise their children encourages the behaviour.

I want one word for completeness, that’s all, there’s a word for pretty much every toxic behaviour. Its also easier to say “pendant” for instance and everyone knows exactly the behaviour you mean.

I sort of want to say one-upmanship but I think that's more of an 'elevenerife' type thing where people go 'one better'.

I'm not 100% sure I've ever encountered the phenomenon you describe where it's the exact same thing. It sounds like that thing where a woman gives an idea in a meeting and it gets ignored and then a man presents it as his own idea. Does that have a name?

imlevitating · 09/09/2022 17:36

Also, it doesn't really matter what name it has. You know the behaviour is toxic. Stop trying to hard with them and disengage mentally.

carefullycourageous · 09/09/2022 17:37

It is not the same, but I laughed when I read (on here) about 'Elevenerifers' as in 'I had a great time in Tenerife' 'Oh that's nothing, we went to Elevenerife' - I guess that is oneupmanship?

imlevitating · 09/09/2022 17:45

Loling @carefullycourageous and my X post 😂Jeez can't you have your own ideas rather than presenting my exact ideas as your own 😂

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 09/09/2022 17:47

I think elevenerife is the closest. We could make our word?

VanillaParkersBowl · 09/09/2022 17:50

is there a specific name for this behaviour?

Arseholery. With the emphasis on the hole.

Pendant is a type of necklace, just to be pedantic. 😂

Georgeskitchen · 09/09/2022 18:04

A knobhead

DFOD · 09/09/2022 18:08

Is it belittling?

Some people have to push others down to keep their own egos afloat?

That’s the first part.

With the second part when they tell you about how they experienced it was is far superior to how you experienced it or do they not even acknowledge that you have had an earlier conversation?

Grandiosity and delusion seem appropriate.
Add in entitled and arrogant and you have a nearly full house of Narc traits.
