The queue typically starts at Hyde Park Corner, so head there to save time.

it’s a wonderful, reverent atmosphere ❤️

The palace should be telling people not to waste money on flowers and donate the money to their local charity or food bank.

I don't think everyone will feel that pressing a button to donate, even if they do that, is enough outlet for how they feel.

Which is awful, really. Not seeing the bigger picture.

This!

And if you really must go, don’t be an Insta Wanker and pose for pictures just to show off on social media.

Why not? Tale photos for posterity Surely the point of being there is to be part of an important period of history. Doesn't float my boat but mumsnet are so uptight about some things.

When someone close to my died I started automatically associating flowers with the cemetery - everything I'd get flowers (for my birthday etc) I'd rush to take to them to cemetery etc.

I do put them in eater, take plastic and clear them when dried myself so it's different by I understand the feeling of wanting to bring flowers for someone passed away as really there isn't anything else you can do.

As far as cleaning the aftermath for the council workers, I had the misfortune of being near Queensway on Notting hill Carnival day. The rubbish, broken glass, vomit was everywhere - that's what people should've been outrageous about.
I know which one I'd rather clear after.

Or you could call it 'being human'.

There were 6 million flowers laid for Diana.

Sparklingbrook · 10/09/2022 12:42

Our council are saying people can lay flowers at the local cathedral if they wish. I don't understand that at all, but to their credit they have also given details of a charity 'if you would prefer'.

Unbelievable, imagine the funds that could have been raised with the money spent on all of those.

Of course, the people cleaning up don’t choose either or, they do both. So why not try to reduce that?

sunglassesonthetable · 10/09/2022 12:52

I'm not going to be laying flowers for The Queen because I don't 'feel' it at all, personally. But I will be leaving flowers in other places this year. For dead people. As mindful 'waste' I suppose.

Except it for me it won't be 'waste'. It will help to express my feelings.

You could express your grief by donating to a charity to support others affected by the same illness though. You could actually do a bit of good as you’re expressing yourself.

And this thread is starting with the flowers laid for the death of the 96 yr old The Queen.

Which will be used as fertiliser probably.

You have no idea if I don't already do that.

Or just turfed into a skip. Regardless, excepting someone else to clean up crap you’ve left lying around is incredibly selfish.

But even if you do, the money spent on flowers could also be added to the donation.

Well I'm only going by reports that they're going to be used in Kensington Gardens as mulch, you know as much as me.

And tbh I don't think laying flowers is quite the same " as crap left lying around".

If I had the same emotions as you, yes. But I don't.

I have my own emotions, thanks.

What you think is irrelevant though. It is crap lying around - you putting emotion into that crap doesn’t mean the earth should be fucked over.

Leave the people alone. This is a big deal. Stop being horrible.

Yes - fertiliser made with air miles, biodegradable cellophane and public-funded clean up.

Yep thinking about wastefulness and all the money that have gone towards good causes instead is truly horrible.

*could have gone!

sunglassesonthetable · 10/09/2022 13:23

Every single thing we do falls into the above category, maybe swap cello for plastic. And it's crap.

Yet here we are, a whole thread of performative angst about the flowers left for the Queens death . Telling people what they don't feel or should feel . How to grieve.

You carry on shouting at people about this.

And telling them how to do their feelings.

Waste does happen, yes. We have a duty to reduce unnecessary waste. That’s what being part of a decent society means.
