Where can we meet up with family in London this Sunday?

DS age 10 and I, travelling from Ealing and needing to be at Kings Cross for the train home at 2.30pm.

Meeting my aunt and uncle who live in Lewisham but are happy to travel.

Where should we meet? Probably just for an hour or so for tea and cake? They're not big fans of eating lunch out, they would rather sit on a bench with sandwiches. DS is slightly too old for a playpark if he's not got anyone else to play with, too big for any sort of soft play type thing too.

Where on earth should we meet? I thought they might have suggested somewhere seeing as they live in London. But they've asked me where I think would suit ds.

Has anyone got any brilliant suggestions? Maybe a nice cafe with views over the Thames so ds can watch the boats go by and the grown ups can chat? I have no idea. And I imagine London is going to be mayhem this weekend.

I can't even figure out any sort of area that makes sense with where we're all coming from and going to.

Greenwich maybe? We've met at the park there before. And there's the cafe in the free museum if its rainy. I'll suggest that if we can't come up with anything else.

Grateful for any genius suggestions from locals. Thank you.

If timings are likely to be tight, then consider the Wellcome Collection (opposite Euston) - interesting galleries you can mooch round, good cafe if you just sit and there's a bookshop/gift shop that abuts the cafe so DS might find something to read/do from there - esp if he's science-y minded

dreamingbohemian · 09/09/2022 12:42

Ealing to Greenwich to Kings X is a lot of travel! I'd suggest something more central. Tea at the British Museum?

NuffSaidSam · 09/09/2022 12:48

I'd go for one of the museums, they all have quite nice cafes and gives you something to build the day around, otherwise it's a mad amount of time on the tube for DS to then have to sit through tea with the elderly!

Victoria and Albert museum is great and right by Science Museum and NHM (both also have cafes), but V&A probably nicer. British museum also has a good cafe.

Richmond park and Kew Gardens are also great and have lovely cafes, close to Ealing but a real trek from Lewisham.

LaurelGrove · 09/09/2022 13:31

Wellcome Collection a good shout though the bookshop has gone. Friends House also nice near there though can't easily figure out if it's open at weekends.
I'd avoid the centre of town this weekend. Think it will be, at best, very busy.

LizziesTwin · 09/09/2022 13:35

Why don’t you go to the Southbank? You could catch the District Line to Embankment & they could go into Victoria/Waterloo. Nice walk along the river & then you could catch the Piccadilly line from either Covent Garden or Leicester Square. You could go to the Transport museum in Covent Garden with your aunt & uncle.

Surinamtoad · 09/09/2022 13:38

Granary Square is right next to Kings Cross. There are cafes and restaurants there, nice spaces to mooch around in, and Samsung KX has all sorts of things older kids might be interested in, including VR.

Mardyface · 09/09/2022 13:48

Granary Square a good shout and likely to be less busy than elsewhere. Southbank good too - easy for your rellies and you can get the train from Blackfriars to St Pancras - takes about ten mins and is 2 minutes walk from KX.

dameofdilemma · 09/09/2022 13:55

Check Thameslink trains are running from Blackfriars to st pancreas this Sunday as there are some eng works (we can't get a direct train into either of those this Sunday).

As PP said, around Victoria likely to be v busy so you might want to avoid tube/train to there.
We've just cancelled our plans as route would have involved walking past Buck Palace.

northerngoldilocks · 09/09/2022 13:59

Granary square. If it's not raining can sit out by the canal and get donuts from Longboys to eat

Tate Modern cafe? Overlooks the Thames

justasking111 · 09/09/2022 14:02

My son is there now he's sending live video footage back. He said it's absolutely crazy imagine it's going to be mayhem this weekend. So many wish to be there after the death of the queen

A580Hojas · 09/09/2022 14:06

I'd go to somewhere like Hayes Galleria near London Bridge, or Tate Modern cafe, given that you need to get to King's Cross for 2.30pm and they need to get back to Lewisham. Greenwich and the Kensington museums are way too far away from Kings Cross.

LIZS · 09/09/2022 14:11

British Museum?

Namechanger355 · 09/09/2022 14:14

London Bridge or south bank is your best bet - central enough from all 3 places

Where? London? The whole of it?

Your son is "there" now? Where exactly? London is quite a big place you know. OP, I agree with the suggestion of Granary Square.

Haus1234 · 09/09/2022 15:16

Wallace Collection - beautiful cafe with nice cake, cool exhibitions of armour for your DS.

ricketybeauty · 09/09/2022 15:19

As PP said I’d do Granary Square - easiest for you to be right by Kings Cross so you can not worry about the train and plenty to occupy DS

OhamIreally · 09/09/2022 15:26

Yes Granary Square.

saraclara · 09/09/2022 15:30

Another vote for Granary Square/Coal Drops Yard, and a walk along the canal if you fancy it.

It's one of my favourite places to have a nice brunch, sit out on nice weather, and incredibly convenient for King's Cross and St Pancras.

If you want to grab snack food and drink of your own, you can all sit on the big steps between the square and the canal and picnic it.

Figgyroller · 09/09/2022 15:33

If you go to Granary Square, you can also pop up to the Samsung KX Tech centre at the top of Coal Drops Yard. It's all free, it's got all the latest Samsung tech to play with and your DS could do a virtual drive around Silverstone 😀.

Oh, you can also walk along the canal to Camden from there if you fancy a short stretch of legs..

Filthycop · 09/09/2022 16:05

I know everyone else said it - but Granary Square is lovely - there are loos and a Waitrose to buy a picnic from. places to sit by the canal and they often have events on

British Museum. It's free. You can show your DS the mummies and go for tea at one of the cafes. Nice easy hour and a bit, and close to Kings Cross.

Rae36 · 09/09/2022 17:33

Granary Square sounds like a possibility then, thank you. Relatives have suggested Richmond Park?
I was a bit wary about museums in case they were all really busy. Hopefully it will be dry then we can be outdoors
I realise London is going to be hellish this weekend but we can't change that.
Thanks for all the suggestions.

Richmond Park is a hell of a long way from King's Cross
