I feel sorry for the Cambridge children on the first day at school.

So insignificant I know but I can't help help feeling sad for George, Charlotte & Louis that their great grandmother passed away on the first day at Lambrook.
They obviously adored them & vice versa, it will be a very hard time for them & I hope the school will be very caring towards them. Kate was absolutely right to stay behind & be with her children.

I'm sure they will be fine.

It is sad for them, but hopefully school will be a good distraction for them, as long as others don't bring it up too much.

RudsyFarmer · 09/09/2022 06:59

The most important people in their lives are their parents and thankfully they are both young and healthy. They’ll be fine.

Ewetoo · 09/09/2022 07:00

@BendingSpoons yes especially in George's class, he's 9 years old so he's peers will likely to have been following the news last night. My children were extremely upset, we watched the BBC & sky news together, it was a historic moment in time & I wanted them to feel part of it.

I’m the same, I thought what unfortunate timing for them, what should have been an exciting day has turned into a very sad family & global occasion. Once again their family life is disrupted by their roles.

Meltingsocks · 09/09/2022 07:02

She was their great Grannie, they won't have been close, they'll be fine.

Your children were likely picking up on your feelings. Mine were supremely uninterested

Yes & Kate is with them, she seems very pragmatic & level headed. Also their Middleton grandparents are very active & involved & will be a great support. It's hard for them as I guess the spotlight will be on them at parts of the funeral unfortunately as it was at the jubilee...

I think they'll muddle through.

@Meltingsocks probably, I was properly weeping since the news broke that she was very ill.😭

The things people find to be sad about.

Yes of course it's sad, but just as it is for any child losing a close relative. My own DC had their great-grandmother until she was nearly 100 so they knew her well & they really missed her.

But I don't get why it's so particularly sad for the Cambridge children or what their first of school has to do with it. They'll be fine.

I was close to my great Uncle so you don’t know that?

I think though we should avoid projecting and wondering. The Queen deliberately kept herself pretty private in terms of knowing who she was and anything we say is just guessing and speculation.

It is a sad time for her family. I hope people leave them alone when it comes to their personal grief.

I remember the day my Dd1's great grandma dies. She wa in reception and we'd told her the night before she was very ill, but it was still a shock to her when we had to tell her the next morning she had dies.
I took her in late and tearful and explained to her teacher who gave her a bit of sympathy and then said.
"you know it's a funny thing but I bought an old dressing up outfit my dd's too big for now because I thought you might like it. You can wear it today if you like."
It was such a sweet thing to do (she obviously had a box of such things for that sort of occasion) and so I left dd getting changed and feeling special.
She's just cleared out her cupboard (aged 21) and that dressing up outfit has gone back in the cupboard.

I wondered if they will go to school today. Normally after a death if children are sent to school it’s to try and keep things normal but that’s unlikely to be the case here given that the school will inevitably have to acknowledge and talk about it as a major historical event. Will be quite tricky for the staff to manage I think. I bet it wasn’t what the headmaster expected to happen on their first day!

EarringsandLipstick · 09/09/2022 07:05

Were your children really upset OP? I can understand being interested but I'm amazed they'd be affected emotionally.

PutYourBackIntoit · 09/09/2022 07:07

I agree. It's difficult enough statting a new school and trying to make new friendships without having to deal with all the questions and excitement frankly that kids will have over this big event and only on their second day 😞

And you know that... how? I was very close to two of my great grans and was upset when they died. Sure they'll be fine, I'm 'fine' now. Doesn't mean they won't be upset though.

My thoughts are with all of them, and you are right - it was right for their mum to stay for them.

It'll all be handled well by the school. These are extremely privileged children. They will not be put under any untoward attention.

sidewayswalking · 09/09/2022 07:09

As a parent you need to be able to level some control. That's an extreme reaction and any initial upset should really have been unnoticed by your children. They were 'extremely upset' because their mother was weeping, not because the Queen died.

I doubt they'll go in, it would probably cause alot of commotion at the school with press etc? Even the security around getting them there, all the royal family were pictured arriving at Balmoral yesterday, Kate was papped collecting them from Lambrook, I'd imagine they'll need to keep a low profile unfortunately.

Well the kids will know all about it. Sorry to hear about great grannie but cool your grandad is now king. And then they’ll just be kids?

carefullycourageous · 09/09/2022 07:14

I think weeping since it started and your kids being 'really upset' suggest you need to dial it down a bit in your house and maybe read/watch less about it.

Goldenbrowns · 09/09/2022 07:14

I do feel sorry for them too. It will be big news on the playground -not for long but long enough.
although they would obviously have had to deal with the initial attention and excitement at being royals on their first few days this is an added layer to navigate.
I would think they will be quite upset too. She was obviously a big part of their lives.
I’ve no doubt the school will handle it well but it’s still a blow

daffodilandtulip · 09/09/2022 07:18

I kept thinking this too. The day started with excited media about their first day and ended with their mum picking them up with sad news.

Just because we know they'll be ok, doesn't mean we can't have empathy.
